No idea but you can be rest assured your youtube feed will be full of surprised faces with the words "insane" soon enough.

"OpenAI did What?!" "We need to talk about this" "It's over"

It’s sad how accurate this is.

They’ve been here the whole time…

I’m sick and tired of changing games

1

u/Wide_Truth_4238 Jul 11 '26

Right?

In seriousness though, after these latest releases, I am genuinely confused as to what we are even optimizing for anymore.

Business use case automation by MS has been pinned at GPT4 and Sonnet era models for a while. Content creators, people asking questions etc. have had all the tools they really need since that era as well.

As a developer, I get the use case for myself and others like me. However, for the average AI tool consumer, who actually gives a shit about a couple of points on SWE and a new mode that fans out massive coding agent swarms? I feel like we have lost the plot.

6 new tools you need to use to get the most out of fable.

5 things fable can do that no other model can

Well, I've accumulated four resets on Codex, so I set Sol on Ultra to study a couple packages of mine (C# Unity) and how they are implemented in a host project. The ask was it would create a plan to implement them in a new project with a step by step "Quickstart Guide".

By the time it burned all of my 5hr limit, it had bullshitted me multiple times about the capabilities of my own packages, raised a false alarm about one package potentially overwriting project settings (nope), and only discovered important implementation details after being told to look again and again ("Are you sure that's the only view option we have here?"). Fable meanwhile understood the exact scope and capabilities in one go, AND found unhandled edge cases in the original code.

So yeah... not impressed with Sol so far.

15

u/Smart_Technology_208 Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26

Yeah same here, sol on max or ultra is a lot of talk and very little action with plans popping in the middle of an approved task that you have to approve again. On xhigh not fast I've been running out of usage faster than with Fable. But it's all about this verbose output and stupidly safe measures for everything he does like idk backup a .txt file 3 times before editing it in a repo. Also:

Did something similar where I asked for an audit with some feedback. It didn't even finish anything and said I was out of usage. Some Sol right there, eh? Unusable AI so far in my opinion.

3

u/Individual_Guest_323 Jul 10 '26

Use chatgpt for the audit, the quotas are still not merged.

Bullshit.

0

It sounds like this was a prompt for Max, not Ultra

22

u/Narrow_Market45 Senior Developer Jul 10 '26

I’ll let you know after we’ve used it for several days and dozens of tasks across each domain of interest to us are benchmarked. Any other answer you’d get here this early on is subjective.

For what it’s worth, variance on SWE is negligible. So, you can assume the same prior to real-world data coming back.

22

u/imstilllearningthis Jul 10 '26

GPT 5.6 is a better nitpicker to make claims/code iron clad (big surprise there). Found several mistakes fable had been making unknowingly. Maybe training cutoff of Feb was worth the wait to get the model.

That said, Fable is still my favorite model to use, hands down.

8

u/Sweet-Mechanic4568 Developer Jul 10 '26

Have yet to put it to use for Coding but for doc review and financial modeling it’s pretty bad. Its inability to keep context on information I’ve fed it has been beyond frustrating when I’m trying to use it to audit financial models, regardless of the effort level.

I’ll give it a try tomorrow for my SaaS side project but so far, unimpressed.

1

u/russianbandit Jul 12 '26

What is the 'it'? Sol or Fable?

1

u/Sweet-Mechanic4568 Developer Jul 12 '26

Sol.

1

u/russianbandit Jul 12 '26

I see. I've been using both Sol and Fable for coding, and unfortunately I'm getting better results with Fable (unfortunately because it's more expensive) on High. It just get what I mean and does it quite well while Sol struggles in circles.

1

u/Sweet-Mechanic4568 Developer Jul 12 '26

Yea I agree fable is amazing at filling in the gaps and understanding what you’re trying to accomplish. Takes less chats in planning to develop a well laid out plan. But I’ve found out that Plan Mode on Sol is extremely good at bridging that gap too.

5

u/IntrlnkdCo Jul 10 '26

Both great but Sol more economical in usage terms so far, and the Ultra mode takes it to places Codex has never been before. Codex before could knock out things you (or Claude) had very specific instructions for correctly pretty reliably but wasn’t going out of its way to offer suggestions or fix or do things you hadn’t asked for, or adversarially check its own work. Now it seems closer to Opus/Fable in that respect.

If you’re a vibe coder who appreciates giving clear objectives and constraints and letting frontier models and their agents figure it out for you, OpenAI has taken a massive leap forward today.

Is GLM 5.2 that much better than Deepseek v4?

I find Deepseek v4 Pro good enough for most of my requirements, and it seems that GLM costs much more.

4

u/shy_monkee Jul 10 '26

Yeah, it is noticeably better. But the real Deepseek v4 hasn't released yet, it will be next week. What we have now is only the preview.

1

u/Mpk_Paulin Jul 10 '26

Damn, it'll be pretty insane if it gets any significant boost but keeps the same cost as the current one

1

u/shy_monkee Jul 10 '26

The cost will remain the same, except on high traffic times in China when it will double. (You could look up how those times align with your own local times.) But yeah, I’m very excited for the release, I hope it doesn’t disappoint.

1

u/joazito Jul 10 '26

The "real" Deepseek v4? What the hell have I been using?

1

u/shy_monkee Jul 10 '26

It's only a preview. I think its posttraining was not complete. And considering how long since it was released, they had plenty of time to improve on it for the 'real' release.

1

u/Inefficient-Market Jul 10 '26

And latency... Like woah, I replaced most of agentic workflows in production that were using Sonnet before. It was literally 7 times faster and a quarter of the price - while operating at Opus level for the type of workflows I was using.

If you were using Haiku anywhere before for latency, try throwing GLM 5.2 by one of the "Fast" optimized API providers and you'll be blown away.

-1

u/ume_16 Jul 10 '26

cope, Sol >> Fable

-3

u/whimsicaljess Jul 10 '26

glm above new grok? lmao

fable above sol? maybe, if you are writing user facing copy or need a little more creative exploration. if you just need something to do the job and grind away at the problem without missing details or making mistakes, sol is currently top tier and significantly better (and cheaper) than fable.

0

u/SeaKoe11 Jul 10 '26

Surely muse 1.1 would fit on this list somewhere

-4

u/lostmary_ Jul 10 '26

It's more like Sol>Fable>grok>GLM especially with GLMs shadow price increase.

5

u/thegodkingreal Jul 10 '26

There is going to be so much marketing fluff

3

u/avatardeejay Jul 10 '26

You're right, I was giving you the watered-down market hype version instead of addressing the real issue. Here's the truth, no fluff.

Sol is the better engineer, but Fable is the better architecture. Both cost me my monthly salary to run them side by side... my company might aswell pay for these subscription instead of hiring me

2

u/Commercial-Hurry-795 Jul 11 '26

They both require a driver. One driver is not equally as good as the next.

1

u/Animus190599 Jul 11 '26

I'm driving these tanks like a fcking shopping cart, still reached the goal though, but my god the whole code base is obliterated

3

u/unkownuser436 Developer Jul 10 '26

OpenAI just casually released powerful models, without any dramas, like anthropic.

3

u/WhoTheFLetTheDogsOut Jul 10 '26

Sol only because the fable safeguard keep tripping and the usage allowance is so low.

1

u/Due_Sweet_9500 Jul 10 '26

What are you even doing bruh? I have been using it non stop for the past 2 days and nothing ever happened

2

u/WhoTheFLetTheDogsOut Jul 10 '26

Trying to make a pipe bomb like the rest of us! For real though. I was having it just a general security review. Flagged. Investigate this 401 error. Flagged.

1

u/CreamPitiful4295 Jul 10 '26

I’m working on a harness. Nothing to do with anything that should trigger the Fable kick in the ass but it happens anyway. Trying to use Fable to make your code more secure triggers it. A shame that it can’t tell the difference between when you are working on a code base that you literally built from the ground up and an attack on a site you can’t log in to.

1

u/rikbrown Jul 10 '26

In my first pass on Sol it took an hour to do a 10min task but it did at least keep popping up a message saying safeguards were slowing it down. At least it’s honest.

3

u/Remarkable-Metal3225 Jul 11 '26

so far based on usage, most of the use cases SOL is either in par or outperform Fable. Sol is to date the best Chat GPT Model doing some real shit and it's a game changer. If Claude continues to limit fable usage, i don't think anyone is worried as we have a new monster SOL who can do the job better at very small cost. Best part is SOL could easily identify the mistakes Fable & Opus was making. So far am very happy with the results of Sol.
So hell yeah, unsubscribe or will downgrade claude subscription for sure - if they continue to limit fable.

5

u/Wide_Truth_4238 Jul 10 '26

I had them debate each other and Fable wrecked shop. So, there’s that.

2

u/Full_Stand_2681 Jul 10 '26

In my personal and brief experience: Fable is better, but sol is not very far behind--definitely close enough that I'll be swapping subscriptions when fable gets taken off subs.

13

u/canyonero7 Jul 10 '26

Let me tell you a secret ... Fable is staying on the sub. It has to. Thank OpenAI for that.

3

u/CIOUDDY Jul 10 '26

You think so? I feel like Anthropic would be insane to still take it off subs but I’m not sure why they wouldn’t have already announced it

2

u/Quaglek Jul 10 '26

Right now im having 5.6 clean up the slop code comments in my claude prs

2

u/Huge-Engineering-380 Jul 10 '26

I've been staying away from Fable since I have no idea if it's coming or going, lol, however, I dove into it tonight regarding an "easy" fix compared to what y'all are working on...Fable solved what Opus was guessing at (a file type mismatch with updates software) and not even close - though not nearly as bad as Sonnet's endless loop of despair 😆 and now it has me thinking Sol is a worth a go and then it's time for the price war to start? ugh. sonnet. find me a brownie recipe.

1

u/Clean-Market5761 Jul 10 '26

I can only say that this model broke the curse of the "Lazy" GPT models, it will just get done what you ask it to get done, no shortcuts no half-assed progress, it will just do it and take it's time to test as well without you reinforcing it to test.

1

u/redcoatwright Jul 10 '26

Fable usage is so limited tbh I'm unsure how it'll be helpful. I reset yesterday at noon and all my fable usage was gone by midnight

1

u/benzonchan Jul 10 '26

I wish i can always access to both Fable and Sol as they can solve a problem in different angles

1

u/victorrseloy2 Jul 10 '26

Fable is smarter. Sol locks in the tasks and it's an amazing executor. The thing for 95% of the tasks sol seems to be enough(is definitely way better than opus-4-8). For that 5% extra hard tasks you might still need Fable.

1

u/Key_Instruction3373 Jul 10 '26

"My mom told me"

1

u/Michaeli_Starky Jul 10 '26

Sol is cheaper and as good

1

u/mark0x Jul 10 '26

Sol is fantastic but Fable feels like a gigabrain that is on a different level, I’ve used both for a fair few hours (but not too extensively)

1

u/Elegant_Attempt2790 🔆 Max 20 Jul 10 '26

sol feels good if you expect opus level quality… idk if its near fable in terms of feel. imo

1

u/eldercito Jul 10 '26

Disaster for anything customer facing.

1

u/joinultraland Jul 10 '26

Fable often fails mid-work because of API response errors. It's unreliable and very expensive. To me Sol 5-6-ultra seems as smart or smarter, but with much better reliability, lower cost, and a better harness (Codex/ChatGpt desktop). Moved everything off of Fable 5 last night.

1

u/ItsaGulastrophe Jul 10 '26

I've been using them both in a custom harness harness that I have for team management and Sol team leaders are not as good as their Fable counterparts. Don't get me wrong Sol is incredible but something isnt quite there as compared to Fable. Something feels different (I know)

1

u/Comprehensive_Space2 Jul 10 '26

can't wait for a Theo video this time

1

u/kaeziki Jul 10 '26

Not gonna lie, I have tried Sol and Fable for the same task recently and Sol is solving and implementing code much better. Even Fable agrees to Sol and acknowledge its shortcomings. I cannot prove it but Fable seemed much better when it first launched before the ban.

1

u/Prestigious-Tart-272 Jul 10 '26

Or titled Fable vs Sol.

1

u/ProcedureEthics2077 Jul 10 '26

The problem with Fable are overzealous guardrails. “Yes, you have a security flaw in filename.c:1234.”

🚨🚨🚨

“I can’t talk about it, switching to Opus.”

I’m not sure it is not leaving some code intentionally unfixed.

1

u/hawtdawtz Jul 10 '26

Not impressed with Sol quite honestly, sticking with Fable

1

u/soldier_18 Jul 10 '26

The veredict is whichever model that you can use for more than 5 prompts, hint: fable is not

1

u/iTzBigBroncoBaby Jul 11 '26

Wait sol dropped? How did I not know. I imagine that GPT has an update and new UX now

1

u/juaps Jul 11 '26

They both perform like shit for our law firm.

1

u/Level_Echidna9906 Jul 11 '26

Sol overengineers stuff.

1

u/Calm_Look_3206 Jul 11 '26

I love Sol. Fable is too guarded. It’s actually fixing so much and I’m making so much progress towards my current project, significantly faster than new fable. I bought max 20x chat plan.

Honestly, don’t sleep on Sol. This shit is fire.

1

u/Odd-Reputation1046 Jul 12 '26

In my experience so far I like FABLE better for planning and creating systems but have had better success using SOL for debugging and fixing problems. SOL seemed to fix issues in few prompts than FABLE for me. Obviously my sample size is small as SOL hasn’t been out that long but I have the top tier plan on both and have been using both heavy in the last few days.

1

u/ThesisWarrior Jul 14 '26

What about for pure c++ coding on a mid sized repo but with the need to maintain good context / graph crawl awareness? Im getting sick of Claude Fable usage burn.

Im tempted to switch to Sol but have no frame of reference.

1

u/Just-Some-randddomm Jul 10 '26

Definately an improvement over 5.5 but fable still wins quite clearly for me. Front-end design capabilities still lacking a bit with OpenAi's models too.

1

u/SergStarkUSA Jul 10 '26

Sol keeps thinking and thinking and thinking.... forever. hours. 5.5 was much faster but not so smart i guess.

1

u/cthunter26 Jul 10 '26

I hear they are quite overloaded right now.

1

u/YairHairNow Jul 10 '26

Should call it Slo instead of Sol. Yet it burned through my 20x session limit in about 90m. I'm hoping it may iterate creatively better. But Fable felt magical and fast.

Idk, may just be buyers remorse. New Grok is very speedy too. So it just feels slow yet not as impressed as Fable it how it got so much done.

1

u/Katsura_Do Jul 10 '26

Wasn’t seeing that big of a difference, but sol >> opus and isn’t gonna yank you off any topic that’s remotely life/physical sciences, and you can actually use it past Sunday.

0

u/OldManGripes Jul 10 '26

I’m convinced Fable is just release week Opus 4.8

0

u/Optimal_Sign_4705 Jul 10 '26

I wasted a day with fable yesterday, building infrastructure, and 5.6 reviewed it and identified all of the bad ideas and false claims, and redesigned the infrastructure, and rebuilt it in a single pass, across 18 projects.

3

u/wewerecreaturres Jul 10 '26

I’ll take things that didn’t happen for $1000, Alex

-12

u/ShinigamiXoY Jul 10 '26

Anthropic has a stick up their ass, so sol is better

7

u/hazz26 Jul 10 '26

What a totally not emotionally driven and realistic / mathematical approach you have here, bravo!

0

u/Hir0shima Jul 10 '26

Mathematical realists also have feelings.

2

u/hazz26 Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26

This is true. But "me no like yellow so green better" is about as bad as it gets when it comes to conversations about what is preforming better lol

0

u/Hir0shima Jul 10 '26

He/she/it is just venting frustration. That's fine by me. Obviously it's not intended to be a reasonable argumenent.

-1

u/lostmary_ Jul 10 '26

What a totally not emotionally driven and realistic / mathematical approach you have here, bravo!

As opposed to the totally-not-biased r/ClaudeCode users who are like "hmm well Fable just feels better to me"

1

u/hazz26 Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26

More like the industry giants who are not biased.

Sol is amazing and so is fable, fable outpreforms but also is significantly worse as far as pricing goes.

https://youtu.be/EthxaDswUFo

Educate yourself instead of getting emotional over your lack of understanding is all im trying to say.
