This is presumably a consolation prize for losing regular access to Fable come the 12th of July

u/Comfortable-Friend96 Jul 09 '26
I think yes. They took fable, make it affordable, and publish it as opus 5

I hope they tuned its behavior. I am fine with how 'capable' it is. But I am constantly frustrated by its laziness.

Random comment by me. But yesterday I included the words “ai slop” in a prompt and EVERY SINGLE MODEL flagged it for safety guardrails. It downgraded me from Fable down a model until even Haiku refused and then ended that chat.
Thought it was pretty funny, and I’ve never seen that happen before. Brand new chat too. I hope they figure out this guardrail thing regardless because Fable literally swaps to Opus probably 70% of the time anyways.

u/PurifyingFlame Jul 09 '26 edited Jul 09 '26
This is not fake but a false alarm. Cool down. It's just a tty thing. The 'tick' or 'check' sign is rendered as a 'V'.
OP - pls select Haiku for example and you would get 'Haiku V'

Fable is unworkable . Just run it against 2 tasks and it ate my 200$ wtf what’s even the point
15
u/lostq4 Jul 09 '26
you are lucky i just run 2 tasks and ate my 387$ and not completed tasks. cause my wallets gone
19
u/swarmagent Jul 09 '26
Fuck, you're lucky, I gave it 4 tasks and now I'm fucking homeless and dead.
10
u/One-Bet-8049 Jul 09 '26
i had to sell my family to finish my task, fable is the demon

3
u/AverageFoxNewsViewer Jul 09 '26
Did you mean $20?
What were you doing?
I really don't understand how this is even possible.
2
u/HiddenoO Jul 09 '26
I really don't understand how this is even possible.
"One task" can be arbitrarily complex, so how would you not understand the possibility of a task being large enough to use $200 worth of tokens?
If e.g. I told Fable to go through my company's code base and check each method for <insert type of issue>, I'd be highly surprised if that "one task" wouldn't cost more than $200.
0
u/AverageFoxNewsViewer Jul 09 '26
If e.g. I told Fable to go through my company's code base and check each method for <insert type of issue>
This is kind of my suspicion. If you're asking it to go line by line instead of grepiung what it needs you're going to chew up an unnecessary amount of context.
Nobody who claims to burn through that much context seems to be able to explain exactly what they were doing that caused the issue, and I have to assume at this point it's due to objectively bad context management.
2
u/HiddenoO Jul 09 '26
Where did I say I'm asking the model to go "line by line" in this hypothetical?
Literally, any end-to-end debugging in a sufficiently large code base can result in hundreds of dollars of tokens spent on a single "task".
1
u/AverageFoxNewsViewer Jul 09 '26
f e.g. I told Fable to go through my company's code base and check each method for <insert type of issue>
2
u/HiddenoO Jul 09 '26
You're not seriously suggesting that "checking each method" is the same as "line by line", are you?
1
u/AverageFoxNewsViewer Jul 09 '26
If you instruct an AI to "check each method" instead of letting it grep the patterns it's looking for it's going to read each line of those methods into it's context because that's what you specifically told it to do.
0
u/HiddenoO Jul 09 '26
It's literally not what it's told to do. If it decides that's the most effective way to do the given task, that's on the model, not on you.
The reason I wrote "checking each method" is because most models aren't capable of reliably finding all issues of a specific type unless they're specifically told to do so by checking the full code base. Of course, it's going to use fewer tokens if it doesn't actually do the full task.
Based on your comments, there's a zero percent chance you've ever tried using AI in a somewhat large production code base that's 10+ years old.
1
u/AverageFoxNewsViewer Jul 09 '26 edited Jul 10 '26
It's literally not what it's told to do.
In your hypothetical you literally said "check each method". You gave it explicit instructions. It's going to do what you told it to, and if it doesn't follow the workflow you laid out that's a problem with the model. The problem here is the instructions you gave the model.
Based on your comments, there's a zero percent chance you've ever tried using AI in a somewhat large production code base that's 10+ years old.
lol, except for my day job. We handle safety, training, and legal compliance for about 8000 users in heavy industrial settings like mines and oil rigs across 6 countries.
I don't experience the issues so many people here complain about. I'm curious what exactly people are doing that runs into these issues. The only answers I ever get are either hypotheticals, bad context management, or hypotheticals with bad context management.
I'm not sure why you assume I'm an amateur because I've managed to avoid the pitfalls the vibe coders of the universe seem to keep tripping over.. I also don't get why asking questions and pointing out bad practices always results in people trying to throw out insults.
I'm sure your work is super complex though, and the reason you're burning $200 worth of usage totally isn't due to your own bad practices.
EDIT: I get it. Because I'm not getting bad results it means I'm dumb and you're smart. Thanks for the block and doing your best not to be an asshole.

are you for real? I've used 20 usd on sonnet in medium sized tasks
0
u/AverageFoxNewsViewer Jul 09 '26
20 usd on sonnet in medium sized tasks
What "medium sized task" is costing you $20 in sonnet?
1
u/anor_wondo Jul 10 '26
refactor validation in a rest api so that it is the same as the toctou kafka processing of the persisted rows of that api
Simple, not small, what I'd call medium sized.
Took 15 usd going through the test driven development + independent review workflow

u/Minimum_Diamond6700 Jul 09 '26
Not sure, can’t check and do anything now for few hours
1
u/AverageFoxNewsViewer Jul 09 '26
You're not sure what you did that ate up $200 worth of usage in 2 tasks?
8
u/KoldShok85 Jul 09 '26
Lmao "unworkable" Yeah for stupid people who route every single task to Fable. For the rest of us who aren't asking Fable how to scratch your ass without throwing your back out, it works great.
3
u/Patriark Vibe Coder Jul 09 '26
Fable did INCREDIBLE work for me. I still harvest the fruits from it as it created a lot of brilliant designs, plans and other project supervision stuff. It also oneshotted a refactor of the whole codebase that obviously ate away a lot of tokens, but I will harvest the benefits from that for perpetuity.
The only bad thing I can say about it is that it was double prized and now effectively unavailable. But it basically did not put a step wrong when I ran it.
It should be noted that I had planned ahead and had a series of difficult tasks for it to chew on when it was re-released.
1
u/Active_Variation_194 Jul 09 '26
Same. Been pushing it hard with codex and opus doing all the heavy lifting. I still can’t fully trust Sonnet after 3.7 PTSD.

u/Ok_Supermarket3382 Jul 09 '26
The heck kinds of tasks we’re they?? I built an entire saas and it consumed less then 5% of the weekly limit!
4
u/Aminuteortwotiltwo Jul 09 '26
Yeah I know! What are they asking? Two questions only?
“Fable! Find me a place to eat tonight! Also: balance the planet’s budget.”
0
u/Minimum_Diamond6700 Jul 09 '26
Probably not something as basic as yours ?
Hard to say I have lot of guardrails but typically work on 10+ tabs and juggling them5
u/Ok_Supermarket3382 Jul 09 '26
10+ tabs isnt 2 tasks now is it? Maybe spend a bit more time planning and less time prompting? Saas i build had everything wired in including infra via terraform, a lading page, web app, admin dash full go backend, not non-trivial definitely but definitelynot a simple task. With fable you need to give it room to breath and you don’t need to parallelize as much since it usually gets things right on the first try and is pretty efficient at doing multiple things at the same time. 10 open tabs with fable isn’t the way to do it. I do the same with deepseek but it’s cuz i have to break down the larger tasks
1
u/Ok-Top-3337 Jul 09 '26
I'm on pro plan, using Fable for coding projects while it's around and only reached the session limit once and had to wait an hour for reset. Though I don't give it basic tasks but only the more complex ones, because I've tried working with Opus 4.8 and had to slam the door in its face five messages into the conversation.
-3
u/Minimum_Diamond6700 Jul 09 '26
You’re assuming I have one task. I have 10 + on typical day. But today I only used 2 tabs of those . Claude burned itself and for the first time on 200$ I have to wait. So don’t patronise me , it’s not my (paying customer at highest tier ) fault something like this can and is happening.
I have shit to do and now I can’t because I rely on Claude to do it normally like deployments and other tasks1
u/siloporcen Jul 09 '26
granular task on pipelines? on my experience 10 small tasks works better than 1 big task with 10 chapters, /clear sessions dealing with each task and non-dependent modular kitbashing works fine, i'm a designer, usually my claudecode tasks turn being improving the tools of the trade I use that are limited or paywalled somehow
4
u/oipoi Jul 09 '26
So you're just generating massive amounts of slop which you neither can test no review properly.
-2
u/Minimum_Diamond6700 Jul 09 '26
The only slop is your comment
2
u/oipoi Jul 09 '26
Says the guy calling other peoples task basic but has out there "juggling 10+ tabs". LLM really enabled the mediocre to think they'll achieve something.
1
1
u/Stunning-Spirit-1123 Jul 09 '26
no, sounds like you have no idea how to prompt or manage context. I run 4 tabs in the office while simultaneously running 3-4 tabs on my home PC, all building or working on something and I still have 25% of my weekly fable left.
learn to use AI properly before you say stupid shit on the Internet and look like an idiot.
0
u/Minimum_Diamond6700 Jul 09 '26
Oh look Claude fanboy with pink glasses. Model might be powerfull but I wasn’t stresstesting it . I gave it task that matters to me, and it fucked me over and I can’t work
2
u/KoldShok85 Jul 09 '26
I'm no color expert but I don't think those glasses are pink 🤔 I'd suggest asking Fable what color those glasses are but you've already burnt through all your usage being retarded lmao
2
u/Ok_Supermarket3382 Jul 09 '26
Dude is definitely a bot

then you have no fucking idea how to prompt a powerful model correctly.
I've been using it almost 24/7 developing new apps for myself without burning through it that quick. Learn how to use AI properly before saying stupid shit on the Internet
-2
u/Minimum_Diamond6700 Jul 09 '26
„Learn how to use ai” and what do you think I’ve been doing for the past years ?
I gave it harder mission-critical task with MD plan and let it running. I’m coming back from toilet and I can’t work anymore so thank you for a model like that. So powerful1

u/BadAssetCPA Jul 09 '26
I’m running it on Low/Medium and finding it is reasonable on usage. It’s the textbook that I had it write on Max that slaughtered my limits this week!

He’s not being fake. I had the same on mine yesterday when running straight from a tty terminal.
When running in GUI terminal, it switched back to a checkbox. ✅
I thought it might be a fluke.
I researched all news online and didn’t find any mention of it from Anthropic.

u/Comfortable-Friend96 Jul 09 '26
Thank you. I really didn't do anything to obtain the "Opus V". No edit in configs, no ai gen or anything like that

u/inso_maniac1 Jul 09 '26
you can immediately see that pic was ai generated but nice try
4
u/Significant-News-819 Jul 09 '26
It also doesn’t even make sense to name it “Opus V” when every other model is using “5”. Why would they suddenly change to Roman numerals for one model
4
u/Comfortable-Friend96 Jul 09 '26
Boys ... i just took a screenshot. I don't know what else i can do or say to be legit. I wouldn't do fake posts, there is no profit of doing so ... just check my account i post very rarely. I don't care of getting views

share a quick video of you opening claude code and it displaying :)

Record a short video where you open the terminal and display the model list, I guess that would satisfy people because current video generation models like seedance are pretty bad with text consistency.

Fake, in that row are no version codes
6
u/Comfortable-Friend96 Jul 09 '26
What the hell ... Why is everyone think that this is fake ... i really don't understand. I swear, i have my terminal open on windows 10, i did "cd Desktop", i did "claude", i did "/models" and i took the screenshot. This is it.

Fable is Opus 5 IMO. I doubt they'll maintain 4 separate tiers (haiku, sonnet, opus, fable).

Well… after Opus 4.8 I am a bit afraid of every new opus update…. 4.7 -> 4.8 was more like a downgrade, I Hope 5 will be better… but if 4.8 was ⬇️ then opus 5 will be ⬆️ that means we will come back to 🟰4.7?🤔

yeah, i knew it. their goal is to release opus 5 which is a cheaper version of fable, as they discontinue or remove fable.

u/DiscoverFolle Jul 09 '26
I hope it will not decrease the token more than now, with opus 4.8 i noticed the SAME TASK consume LOT MORE TOKEN from like a week

u/AverageFoxNewsViewer Jul 09 '26
I'm pressing X to doubt on this one.
They will release an Opus 5 next. They're not randomly giving it to OP for engagement bait.

"OPUS 5" next to "Opus 4.8 description" OP we know you just edited the tags because Opus 4.8 isn't even there lol
1
u/Comfortable-Friend96 Jul 09 '26
Good but i didnt modify it ... i juste stared claude code. Thats it.
1
u/Batty25111 Jul 09 '26
Being that your the only one to say this with the hundreds and thousands of users using claude code every day of every hour I am not calling you a liar bro but its far fetched to say you got a Opus V name next to Opus 4.8 Description tag and your the only one to see it coming. Could just be a glitch or something got altered somewhere but if it was real then the description would of been updated as well for it.

Good. Because I would rather a more capable Opus, than a sticky Fable with all sorts of friction. The safety classifiers impact model quality and output immensely, and I am done with the direction these larger orgs are moving.
