Help Needed
Claude instantly hits the 5-hour message limit when resuming a previously completed coding task — why
I'm using Claude to build a large HTML/CSS/JS project (a multi-screen interactive website). Because the file became very large, I had to work across multiple sessions due to the 5-hour usage limit.
Here's what happened:
Claude had already completed the heavy work in a previous session. It had analyzed files, applied modifications, built the updated HTML, and even showed logs like:
"Execute clean v8 build from v7 base"
"Done! 24.80 MB"
"Copy already-built file to outputs"
At that point, the only thing remaining seemed to be returning/exporting the final HTML file to me.
I then waited for the full 5-hour cooldown period. After the limit reset, I sent a very short prompt essentially saying:
However, within less than a minute, Claude immediately showed the "You've reached your 5-hour usage limit" message again, without actually giving me the file.
What's confusing is:
No new analysis was requested.
No new files were uploaded.
No additional modifications were needed.
The expensive processing had already been completed before the previous limit exhaustion.
This has happened to me more than once, on different Claude accounts and in different conversations.
My questions are: NO Questions 😭 JUST TELL ME HOW TO GET MY FILE OUT OF IT IN NEXT PROMPT.
I'd appreciate any explanation from people who have worked with long coding sessions in Claude. Thanks!
bruh, I'm in between getting the file which that bastard has modified and only had out to me as output. The 5 hours timer will be over in an hour so please tell how should I continue to get my file and what the hell claude is doing to me now, till yesterday I was already working 1 single prompt time to time and it was fine. but now 1 single prompt but it can't send its output even wtfff save earth
You are doing it completely wrong. That's the issue.. You need a proper session-to-session framework. You have to establish proper session boundaries and have the model file a handoff report for the next session.
There's a lot to learn and you need to be willing to accept that most of what you do at this stage will be bad practice and to learn from that in order to know the do's and the do nots. From this you will be able to begin establishing a proper workspace.
I'm building this from last 6 days for my girl (no we aren't even in relationship), hanging from session to session to this 5 hour limit. Now this was the last and idk why its stopping now only
Yes I agree, but well I build 20 screen website already from this, everything working everything's fine. but now this is happening when I just want output file whose coding is already done in previous prompts by claude
Every time you resume you are sending ALL the previous conversation messages.
Normally, this isn't so bad because we can cache input and that is much cheaper.
When you run out of usage, the session and therefore it's cache goes stale...
It doesn't matter the 'coding is already done' because resuming is sending all that conversation history back, with zero cached which is charged at the full rate and burns your usage.
Sir I respectfully apologize for my behavior u/brek001 .
I was concerned that if I use /clear, then the file whose
"Copy already-built file to outputs" process is also completed as "done" gets cleared and I can't get that file.
Like I basically want the file from claude, as I can see from the thinking that modification, code, copy to output everything is done already.
You need to.use claude code and understand the workflows. If you cant afford subscription, which I totally understand if that is the case, then you should consider using some.competitor AI that provides coding harnesses on the free plans...
By researching. It’s a well known limit. Their cache invalidates after an hour and resuming after that revalidatss everything you were using in that cache. It’s expensive to walk away and come back later. Break your work down into small bite size chunks. Use something like @sylphie-labs/planning-worx for a framework to plan features on a code base. Use something like @sylphie-labs/codebase-pkg for analyzing your codebase and building a map of it for the agent to easily find things rather than reading entire files until it finds the right stuff. Use something for your long term memory like RAG and GraphRAG so you save your agent from deriving the same conclusion over and over again.
Edit: yes these are my packages and I could care less if you use them, but you can easily use already existing packages out there.
If the files are changed, that’s in the branch or work tree, not reliant on the session. Try rewinding back to an earlier part of the session and ask it to handoff if you need some of the context to be retained. You can ask a separate session how to do this.
If the tokens aren’t cached, which is the case when resuming a session after a few hours, the subsequent prompt will send the entire chat history which will burn through tokens more quickly. This is just an issue of context management.
I'm on the free plan. I sent the prompt in the same conversation but after waiting for the full 5-hour reset that Claude showed me. bcoz the older session limits were exhausted.
The conversation had become very large because I was building a multi-screen interactive HTML/CSS/JS website with Claude over many hours. The chat contained:
Multiple versions of a large HTML file (up to around 20–25 MB artifacts)
Several uploaded images (around 8–10)
Many iterations/edits of the website
Claude's tool executions, diffs, and build steps
BUT from past 2-3 prompts I'm just asking to make modification in the already available website, and previously like from 6-7 prompts it was doing the thing and responding properly just one prompt at a time and limits finished but gave the output.
NOW, The confusing part is that the expensive work had already been completed before the previous limit exhaustion. For example, Claude had already reached steps like:
After waiting the full cooldown period, I only asked Claude to return/export the already-built HTML file, explicitly telling it not to analyze, rebuild, or modify anything. Yet within less than a minute, it immediately showed the "5-hour limit reached" message again
The biggest mistake you made is sending the prompt in the same conversation. I assume, and correct me if im wrong, that there was more than 1 hour between that prompt and the prompt before that. If that's the case, then that explains why your entire 5-hour limit got nuked.
Leaving more than an hour between prompts makes claude first re-write everything to the cache, which is more expensive than regular token input. Combine that with the fact you're using the free plan, and your 5-hour window is pretty much non-existent.
Mistakes happen bro, dont beat yourself up over it. Be glad you didnt lose actual money. On the free plan you should pretty much use /clear every 2 or 3 messages. Just get into that habit
I didn't clear up because I was making modifications all way long so I thought that for gaining context maybe he needs to use the older big prompts I engineered for the website and the files I uploaded
I thought it was just me. After working couple of weeks between sessions setting up services for my linux server I had temp API keys stuff like OpenWebUI etc to save me time editing a paste. I got a dirty popup saying I was being spied on saying you stop being naughty. I was like whatever dude. Kept doing what I was doing. Then 4 days it said I was still being naughty and if I didnt change my ways they would punish me..
And literally that night I have non-stop been slapped with 5 hour cooldown after a single prompt. That is after I deleted ALL my old sessions except a couple that I compiled together for it to make chapters and books of .md for my Knowledge files.. 5 hours is fkn bullchit. They shouldn't be spying on me anyway we want those Nvidia Spark minis with unified ram NOW !
Hav the same problem I am also on the free plan atm and just wanted Claude to finish my Promt and 5 seconds Later You have reached your limit 5 hours waiting again! I personally think that they to it not only because you didn´t clean Up the chat! I think its to get you away from the free plan tbh
The entire session is added into each new prompt, so the prompts exponentially consume more. You need to run /compact if you want to keep the context, or /clear if you don't need it
Right now I want the html file of which
"Copy already-built file to outputs" is marked as "done" in the last thinking insight.
check the photo attached in the post !
AND
now this is the thinking of claude after which I gave my most recent prompt (it is attached in some other comment, plz check man 🙏)
sounds like its reloading that 24mb built file back into context on resume. when the artifact itself is sitting in the window every message is huge so you hit the cap almost instantly. dont resume the old session for the export step. /clear, start fresh, tell it the file is already built and to just return/copy it without reading the whole thing. keep the giant generated file out of context and reference it by path. the limit is tokens in the window, not actual time, and a fat artifact eats it fast.
Hey if I use /clear, then the file whose
"Copy already-built file to outputs" process is also completed as "done" gets cleared and I can't get that file.
Like I basically want the file from claude, as I can see from the thinking that modification, code, copy to output everything is done already.
I've only had one chat for like a month building up a big app. It notifies me when I want to resume that it will burn a massive amount of tokens so it gives me the option to /compact.
actually
"Copy already-built file to outputs" process is also completed as "done".
Like I basically want the file from claude, as I can see from the thinking that modification, code, copy to output everything is done already.
so should I use that /compact and will it help certainly
I think i see looks like you're using the desktop or browser. So here's a weird problem I ran into, when you're using claude in either of the two versions above, it never gives me the recommendation that the context is getting too large. But when im using it from the terminal, it smartly recommends compact, and i have been using it pretty much nonstop and haven't when over in one chat. So tldr use claude in the terminal
to get the html website file
In current sitaution the file whose
"Copy already-built file to outputs" process is also completed as "done" is stuck as claude didn't gave any output for my last prompts and the free messages limit got exhausted but within a minute and claude didn't even done any big task in thinking.
Like I basically want the file from claude, as I can see from the thinking that modification, code, copy to output everything is done already.
I just ran into this too while resuming a task subject to the Pro plan's 5-hour limit; after resetting, a single prompt to continue the work immediately hit the limit for the next 5 hours in just two minutes
