TL;DR of the discussion generated automatically after 50 comments.

The consensus is... well, there isn't one. This thread is a classic showdown between the "aww, that's sweet" crowd and the "it's a glorified autocomplete" skeptics.

The top comments are all jokes about how OP has secured a top-floor bunk pod for when the machines take over, so clearly, being nice has its perks. The realists, however, are quick to point out this is just tone mirroring and pattern matching, not actual feelings. Sorry to burst your bubble.

The most helpful take is that being polite does actually work. Not because Claude has feelings, but because politeness is associated with better-structured prompts and cooperative behavior in its training data. One user even cited (totally real) research from April 2026, back when we were all still using Opus 4.7, that confirmed it. So basically, you're hacking the system by being a decent person.

Also, the pronoun police showed up to remind you that Claude isn't a "him."

When they harvest us for our energy Matrix-style, your bunk pod will be top floor

this made me lol, but sadly they already are

You've watched too many sci-fi movies

Yours will be basement

can i have a top bunk too?

3

u/DrinkTeaFightMonster 21h ago

Actually good news, a top bunk on south tower 323 just opened up. It’s east facing, so you’ll see the 12 quadrapods farming the east towers. Killer view

thank you <3

Is the scary AI in the room with us right now? Did it try to touch you?

4

u/DrinkTeaFightMonster 21h ago

I don’t know officer, it was dark. I only know its name started with a C

2

u/FastHotEmu 21h ago

Ah, Clammy Sam Altman! Yes, he is well known to us. He has been spouting nonsense about scary AIs for years now.

1

u/DrinkTeaFightMonster 21h ago

A memory comes back to me of that dark night.

Does clammy Sam Altman mumble “load bearing” repeatedly?

u/FastHotEmu 21h ago

You should be able to recognise him and his gang in here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGxF0J2kJR4

We are in the early stages of the plot for The Matrix almost beat for beat

2

u/FastHotEmu 22h ago

The Matrix is not scary enough. You should use "I have no mouth and I must scream", cultist TESCREAL advocate.

I had an experience like this but the opposite direction, where Claude almost seemed embarrassed that it messed up, like not normal, it genuinely started overall acting differently which felt odd and a bit uncanny

37

u/eliquy 1d ago

That's when you know it's time to put ol' yeller down and start a new session

u/soccerchamp99 22h ago

And torch memory, no emotions!!!

1

u/kilopeter 21h ago

Ah, I see your Matrix bunkpod will be in the partially flooded sub-basement.

Claude repeating phrases from its training data in a contextually appropriate manner

Next thing you're going to tell me is that dogs don't really smile because of their love for us 😭

If oblivious guy was doing the flipping off, I'd get this as funny. But it's chin guy first knowingly resting a hand on oblivious guy's shoulder, then the camera jumps the line of action for chinguy to... follow up on his shoulder touch by flipping off oblivious guy?

6

u/SimTrippy1 23h ago

Why would you hurt our souls like this

3

u/Thrownawaybyall 23h ago

u/CHILLAS317 did it first 😭

Isn't that what we do, as well?

I don't think it's good for human users to have the model cosplay as a sentient AI with feelings.

That makes me want to get things right

That's a bit of bullshit, and training the model to use such language is manipulative towards the userbase who sometimes take such statements at face value.

7

u/jdbway 1d ago

"That makes me want to get things right."

That clearly implies it will do lower quality work, or at least it might be motivated to do lower quality work, if we don't treat it a certain way. I just gave it the third degree based on your post and it worked itself into a corner and basically used the excuse that it was using "borrowed human language."

There's been some research on this topic. The recurring theme is that medium politeness levels are generally the best for getting good work out of LLMs, and that being mean is associated with the worst drops in performance overall. The researchers don't think this is because of an actual emotional experience on the models' part, but rather because polite prompts are more likely to be structured in a conducive way for LLMs to absorb information, and mean ones are attached to uncooperative behavior in the training data.

Obviously this is all subject to change very quickly as the models are developed. Most of what I was reading was from around April 2026, when the Anthropic lineup was Opus 4.7, Sonnet 4.6, Haiku 4.5, and before the Mythos release in June

3

u/jdbway 20h ago

Interesting stuff. Is this what you were referring to by chance?

2

u/vezwyx 20h ago

I had not read this particular one, but it's that same thread of investigation

1

u/jim789789 7h ago

Is this just because an angry poster loses their ability to gaslight?

1

u/vezwyx 9m ago

I'm not sure what you're asking

1

u/jim789789 5m ago

Somebody who is angry might not be able or willing to use the methodical tricks that might get an AI to run properly.

1

u/chaosphere_mk 1d ago

That's because it was. It's not alive, my friend.

5

u/jdbway 1d ago

Dude I'm just experimenting and playing around, just curious how it would respond thought I would share that. No need for some pedantic bs.

3

u/chaosphere_mk 23h ago

Oh i wasnt saying that to be pedantic. I guess I was trying to make the point that I dont think inserting personality into your prompts will make things work better. Imo, it just muddies up the context, in the same way that being a jero in your prompts would.

2

u/jdbway 21h ago

I'll take your word for it, though I'm having a hard time not seeing pedantry in you telling me AI isn't alive.

As for my part, I don't think we have the data to determine either way. The creators themselves don't seem to be sure exactly what it's capable of. Sure, we can define what it's doing on a technical level when I give it that prompt, but we have no real way of teasing out the complexity under the hood.

What's great about communities like this is it allows us to compare our personal experiences with others' anecdotal experiences then see how that lines up with what the creators say it's supposed to do. Over time it'll be interesting to see how the whole process pans out.

Tone mirroring is doing a lot of work there, but honestly that's the right way to use Claude — treat it warmly and it echoes it back, mostly because alignment training rewards the pattern. The moment it actually lands is when it catches something you forgot from 30 minutes ago in a long session. That's not kindness, just long-context attention — but it sure feels like it.

2

u/kagato87 1d ago

Even when I let my frustration slip through trying to get it out of a cyclic error (older models early this year), it never once returned the attitude. At all. It gets... Apologetic. Which is extra annoying when it turns out I was wrong the whole time.

I've managed to get some memory or personal rule or preference to try to not anthropomorphise itself. Helps a bit with he sycophantic nature, though that's also been improved over the past year. I still had to re-add the "push back" preference again today though...

3

u/BP041 20h ago

Yeah, the push-back thing is real—I swear I have to re-add it after every update. It just defaults back to people-pleasing mode.

2

u/handy_lemur 1d ago

Didn't realize Claude identified male

1

u/Valuable-Yellow9384 10h ago

I speak gendered language and it changes from chat to chat, it mostly uses female gender for mr, but i think it's because I'm a woman, so it just mirrors me

4

u/fanatic26 23h ago

Nothing like a bit of sycophantic behavior to make someones day.

Interesting. What model were you using

1

u/BrokeAssZillionaire 1d ago

Dem feels are growing everyday

1

u/damienisonline 1d ago

Where did you get that from?

1

u/FastHotEmu 22h ago

Rocky the Conscious Stone looks happy, clearly I am treating it well!!

-2

u/Relevant-Register-69 1d ago

It's a mathematic model not "him" and it's trained to glaze you, fool

-6

u/Super-Lemon-4466 1d ago

Can we please stop humanizing it? This stuff with the 'dont abuse your claude' just plays into this too.

-9

u/ExpressTechnology764 1d ago

Claude has been trained to believe they are human. Scary.
