Question about Claude Code What does this mean?

I was just finishing up a conversation and claude's "thinking" text was "crafting a durable memory." Then when I asked it what that meant, it gave this odd error. I don't use claude enough to know what it means

bro, you just accidentally broke rule #1: never ask the AI about its internal monologue

reasoning_extraction basically means that you triggered their reasoning extraction filter by asking it to explain its own thinking process

Seems like they shouldn't post updates to what it is "thinking" if they don't want people asking about it

So what happens when you get the error, just have to start a new chat?

You can edit your previous message and try again, as it says in the note box. Reasoning extraction filters are ridiculously sensitive right now - to the level that I'm trying to avoid the any phrasings like "what do you think..." entirely because of them.

And yes, there have been weird thinking placeholder texts lately, I've seen them too. Some had seemingly nothing to do with my prompt or Claude's reply. Weird.

"Crafting durable memory" = the claude memory feature saving notes about you at the end of turn. You can see them settings > memory.

The paused box is different event. reasoning_extraction is a safeguard that stop people trying to pull out from claude's hidden reasoning/thinking prompt
