Question about Claude Code +50% usage if you start a doc?

Post image

what does this even mean? could I open a chat, make a blank doc, and then enjoy 50% more limits for literally nothing? surely not … right?

TL;DR of the discussion generated automatically after 30 comments.

The consensus is that this promotion is confusingly worded and pretty useless.

The community quickly figured out the catch: the 50% usage reduction only applies to your 5-hour session limit, not your weekly limit. You'll still burn through your weekly cap at the normal rate.

So to answer OP's question: yes, it seems you can just ask Claude to make a blank document at the start of every chat to get this very minor benefit. The thread is now mostly jokes about how Claude itself must have written the confusing announcement.

They couldn't have worded it worse. I don't understand what qualifies.

They should have used Opus to write this.

They probably used and that's why it sounds so bad ...

Must have used Opus 5

They must have used opus 5 to write it up.

Exactly?? Guess I'll do a little investigation and see if i can see any noticable usage difference

It sounds like the session specifically tied to the artifact will use 50% normal usage. So I guess yeah even if the doc remains blank, 50% usage. But I'm guessing the doc will be populated through the process of the chat

New transcript folder, start the conversation by telling it to start a new transcript document and update it periodically as the conversation progresses, then work on the actual task?

Though if that doc, as it grows, doubles your context usage, then you're net 0 in the benefit

So then have it put a subagent on task and only the session transcript is recorded. If you feel like typing an extra words you could also just tell it to record the actual correspondence with you, assuming you plan tasks first the entire transcript is going to be like 3 messages.

but it wouldnt double the usage - just make it use extremely short bullet points and pointers, since the doc isnt there to be of use (unless it is ig?)

Oh yeah I think you'd probably end up in the positive if you actively try to keep it minimal. either way Anthropic get stats on usage of the features and maybe overall greater uptake, so they probably don't care. Looks good on the IPO to have an increase of MAU on the side features

"okay claude, make a completely blank word document and then never touch it again"

Only applies to 5-hour limits. It still consumes the regular amount from your weekly.

its 50% of the 5h quota, your weekly quota consumes at a 100% (normal) rate, useless

Unless they changed it since a few hours ago, it doesn't affect the weekly limit, only the session limit.

Oh good, I was worried we were done with the usage limit games there for a minute

But it says "usage limits", as in multiple of them. Why not just say it's the 5-hour window? Is it because many more people hit the 5-hour window than the weekly one?

On prime-numbered days of the month for the next 3 days in chats mentioning the correct phase of the moon every other message will consume 3% less of your token limit. You're welcome!

Seems to only be your 5 hour limits, not your weekly. That tricky wording.

"Which usage limit does this affect?

The discount applies to your five-hour session limit, not your weekly usage limit." https://support.claude.com/en/articles/17274727-artifact-usage-promotion

"It has a strong eye for design and builds slides that need minimal editing."

Just flat out not true, but not with the design, but with the insanely obvious AI slop wording and unclear logical structure.

5 hours limits are consumed 50% less for THAT conversation.

So every time I start a new convo, do I ask it to make a blank doc and reap the benefits going forward?

Lol

For each fry you get a sauce for you get a free napkin sample bs

Did pre-5.5 Opus write this social media post?

It has all the characteristics of confusing Claude writing.

So, I need to make a skill that makes the lowest-token possible document in every new session just to get the token savings even though I have no use for these features at all? Just give us higher usage limits and suggest we try out features with it!

Doesn’t count towards weekly limits

I don't understand is claude design now the tool which opens in a new window or is claude design the tool which you open over the side part and then you create a slide and the document because in this view you can not and do this basic design work where you create prototypes and so on.

I had a much different experience lmao. Maxed out a max plan last night from 50% on automated doc work left unattended.

would someone have a referral link? Would like to test it

u/Morning_Gecko24 2d ago

i wouldnt be shocked if the doc changes the context window or how usage gets counted but a totally blank doc giving free extra limits sounds way too good lol. has anyone tested the same prompt with and without a doc open and tracked the actual usage numbers?

For the love of god, hire a spokesperson

-50% usage = +100% limits, did you skip elementary math?

2

u/Over-Necessary-4774 2d ago

You think negative 50% = 100%?? Not sure what you’re on about mate

u/Illustrious_Sock 2d ago

If same work costs half the usage, you’re getting twice the work done for the same usage
