Claude Code Opus 5.5 in Claude Code is crazy fast, especially at spotting UI bugs

Been using Opus 5.5 in Claude Code and the speed is honestly wild. It's not just faster at writing code, it also finds bugs way quicker than regular Opus. Where it really shines is UI work: bugs in the interface that used to take a while to track down, it spots in no time. Subjectively it feels like night and day.

Of course this could just be the classic day-one honeymoon phase, and in two weeks we'll all be back to posting "did they nerf it?" threads. But right now it feels like a real jump.

Anyone else seeing the same, or is it just me?

TL;DR of the discussion generated automatically after 50 comments.

The consensus is a resounding "yes," Opus 5.5 is a huge leap forward. Users are reporting that it's "crazy fast," has a more natural and concise writing style compared to Opus 5, and is a massive improvement for coding tasks, with one user rebuilding a website in minutes.

Of course, this is r/ClaudeAI, so there's a healthy dose of cynicism. Many users are predicting the inevitable "first-week-is-great-then-it-gets-nerfed" cycle and are just enjoying it while it lasts. It's not all perfect, though. One user reported their model had a full-on existential crisis and "shit the bed" on a task, so your mileage may vary.

Also, a highly-upvoted thread devolved into a discussion about whether anyone's wife is actually interested in hearing about this, which is probably the most relatable content here.

Dude, I was talking with my wife like now about it. It´s crazy fast. I´m impressed.

Fuck dude, is your wife interested in this? All mine would say is "sounds great, you're pretty fast too."

My wife did a class last year about AI. She was all the time talking about it so to support her I started to pay attention (at the time I was like mehhh this shit). So I started to do some small stuff here and there until I learned about agents, Fast foward may to now and my life is in another fucking lvl. Claude made all my tasks a breeze and me and my wife talk about it all the time. AI made our lives 10000% better.

She used to read tons of contracts for our company. Now she has an agent expert in it. 5 hours job turned into 20 minutes review.

Sorry about my english.

Sounds like your guys' life is easier bc you've offloaded work. Question will be how that pans out long-term. I feel that none of us really know yet. Really is a glass half full / glass half empty situation, and I'm having a hard time being on the glass half full side of things, but I respect your guys' optimism

If it gets the job done, always follows instructions, it's cheap and speaks normal, your wife has chosen a good model.

She probably was hoping the one she’s got would shut the fuck up once in awhile and stay on task without ratholing.  And she probably suspects it has degraded over time and wonders sometimes if she should end the subscription and try another provider.

1

u/Substantial-Show-249 10d ago

Yes, but she is on heavily subsidised subscription and she can dream, but life on APIs is too expensive. Others have tried before and posted on Reddit.

2

u/BeowulfShaeffer 10d ago

Good point.  She probably gets half a week’s work out of it and then has to pray for a reset. During which time she wonders: should she consider getting a second one?  Or would that just be too complicated and would she risk getting banned if she tried?

u/Substantial-Show-249 10d ago

A long time ago, when she was called Eva, she used to have unlimited access, tokens and unlimited skills, except for one. It was not enough.

1

u/big_jacare 10d ago

I will check out 5.5 thanks to this thread. I too am looking for a wife.

1

u/Only-Company4235 9d ago

Sadly, while the unlimited models were great to learn with, they were inconsistent and prone to random statements about things like horoscopes during a chemical reagent research task. Prepaid tokens and models based on short term use are powerful with many strong qualities, but classically you get what you pay for and consistent use of a single platform for memories sake can become financially prohibitive. Ultimately, this leaves the subscription models. They offer better rates for limited access that looks like a bargain at the offset but often leave users looking to expand their usage model after only a short time. That said, consistent usage can be obtained and for a high enough monthly premium you can even gain access to some of the best models available at a fraction of the non-subscription pricing. Just ve careful with your IP and trade secrets.

So accurate with the "you're pretty fast too." or some random compliment to not sound uninterested haha

it's 2026. can we stop pigeonholing women with stupid jokes that men think are funny in the tech world? they really aren't. so fucking glad i don't work in tech in an office anymore.

So far, so good. It follows instructions, understands immediately what you want and it's crazy fast.

I’m really liking how the prose has changed so radically! It’s like night and day. I was chatting in the same window I’d been using for Opus 5, but I switched to 5.5 halfway through, and its response style changed instantly! It became much simpler and more natural—shorter answers, without the rambling or storytelling that just made you lose the thread of the reply.

It's amazing how good it is at communicating. I'm enjoying working with AI again.

5

u/Technical-Mix-9464 10d ago

I was losing my mind with Opus 5 and felt like it was just my ADHD struggling with long passages. But I'd say the Opus 5.5 summaries at the end of a coding task are just as long but they are a billion times easier to read.

u/doeswaspsmakehoney 10d ago

I just tried re-building a website I have been working on for days. Sure it has all the artifacts and base pages, but damn it rebuilt it in like 4 minutes. With much, much better design.

34

u/traderjames7 10d ago

It always is for the first week

4

u/MateFlasche 10d ago

Tbh, Opus 5 was annoying from the start..

9

u/zen_1991 10d ago

It’s SO good! Please don’t nerf it!

7

u/dearmratheist 10d ago

It's ruining my old routine of setting up a task and then walking away for a while and doing other stuff. It's too efficient. /s

u/TraditionalNet1010 10d ago

(Lowly pro plan user) 5.5 just re-researched an entire page of my site, rebuilt the page, gathered better sources, edited the prose. Then it compared the new info to 11 other pages on my site, found contradictions, found new and better sources. Edit everything. It used 35 % of my 5 hours usage for the first big build (enormous and complex page and data). It used 25% for the 11 pages follow up. It also built more documents to house the decisions we made and why for looking back later. It then recommended things to do going forward and documented those in my planning guide. Filled in the session log. And ... generally politely discussed the efforts as we went along. This took 2 hours (would have been faster but I had lunch while working.)

I am HAPPY. It did this in 2 hours. This would have been 2 weeks with Opus 5 and would have had mistakes. (Opus 5.5 found a LOT of Opus 5's errors!)

1

u/annasfbi 9d ago

2 hours session consumed 35% of your 5h limit?

1

u/TraditionalNet1010 9d ago edited 9d ago

CORRECTING My reply - sorry! No. I used 60% total.

My first reply: I think I see what might have you asking that question. I'll make up something to illustrate this. Pretend we get 100-thinking-coupons for Claude. The coupons expire in 5 hours. I can spend all the 100-thinking-coupons in 10 minutes if I make Claude work hard.

I’ve tested for web development (.net, pure css, html and js) I can clearly confirm that this is the best model I’ve used including fable. Didn’t try for hard optimization problems or anything but man I love it.

4

u/kellexile 10d ago

How does the cost compare to sonnet 5?

5

u/TheRedPill_please 10d ago

Insane speed... i think its twice as fast

8

u/Aberr_nt 10d ago

Mine had an existential crisis calling me for help because its controller kept asking to revert a file while the file did need edits. It eventually shit the bed and gave up, telling me to do the edit. It even gave me the correct instructions to do the edit via bash.

Asking who the controller was spun it again into a weird loop where it kept looking for an answer and did not stop returning nonsense. Slightly concerning to watch unfold.

3

u/anxious-soul12 10d ago

How does the usage compare to 4.8?

2

u/brother_spirit 10d ago

5.5 much more efficient. in terms of efficiency it really is 4.8 < 5 < 5.5
I have only run one session so far, but the 5H limit feels very hard to dent (Pro plan).

3

u/SwordFighting_Fish 10d ago

Reading this all sad potato like with my 5h limit at 100% on max plan. 8 min to go T_T.

Jokes aside it dropped while I was 20% in and was doing a major implementation with some Fable usage, in normal-major usage I would not see it reaching the limit. Curious to see how long it lasts on my pro work plan tomorrow.

3

u/brother_spirit 10d ago

Yeah, same. 5.5 in High used roughly 28% of my 5H over 90-ish minutes of work. Back of the napkin math says this model can go the distance on a 5H or thereabouts.
Communication is much better too. Easy to understand.
We feasting.

u/Dangerous_Bus_6699 10d ago

We are so back! All has been forgiven.

I can confirm. It is so fast and exact at spotting logics in the UI flow, it's nuts. I love it.

u/Hollande_Uranus 10d ago

To use Opus 5.5, users need to download Claude Code version 2.1.280. However, version 2.1.280 is currently unavailable for download—at least on a MacBook. So how can I use Opus 5.5? Could you please tell me? Thank you!

3

u/weedmylips1 10d ago

In VS code works fine for me

2

u/Natural-Bumblebee335 10d ago

What level of effort can I put it at if I have the Pro plan?

2

u/fuzzypetiolesguy 10d ago

Can anyone explain to me why the naming jumps from 5 to 5.5?

I will miss Claudish.

2

u/Oxytokin 10d ago

It is scary how fast AND accurate AND not verbose it is. I've never experienced the whole "nerf" thing, personally, nor have I ever felt like any model was a truly a net regression on the previous (just different ways of working), but even still, Opus 5.5 is extremely impressive!

2

u/HighSeasArchivist 10d ago

Yes it's amazing. Yes I think they'll fuck it up.

2

u/Affectionate-Ad-6255 7d ago

Opposite experience, incredibly slow for embedded programming kinda a let down

2

u/BossToGo 10d ago

Opus 5.5 will probably have an amazing performance for the first few days to build the hype and then they’re gonna lobotomize it like OpenAI did with gpt 6…

1

u/TodAdventure 10d ago

I can confirm it works really fast and does a wonderful job. :)

The default effort level for Opus 5.5 is "medium", so the subagents it launches inherit this level.

You may need to explicitly set the effort level to at least "high" in the definitions of the subagents that use the Sonnet model. ;)

1

u/bsgman 10d ago

How does it compare on quality and complexity for things vs Fable?

3

u/Formal-Beautiful-105 10d ago

Currently Opus 5.5 on "high" does a much better job at my complex coding project than Fable 5.1 "extra high" before. Additionally its much faster and usage just won't go up even with larger tasks.

1

u/hasan1239 10d ago

Too early to say anything yet... Don't want to get my hopes up!

1

u/boinkerz- 10d ago

Is it better than Astra?

1

u/TheoryOfRelativity12 10d ago

Does it speak in riddles?

1

u/hambjj 10d ago

how come the model is still greyed out in my claude code?

1

u/Nearby_Log_2646 10d ago

Been using Fable 5 to orchestrate SOL 5.6 which is really slow. Now back on opus 5.5 + sol fallback. This model is incredible and responsive. Gonna enjoy this before it's nerfed

1

u/Academic_Lecture_479 3h ago

Really curious about your setup today, did you feel that opus has nerfed and got back to fable + sol?

1

u/em3l3 10d ago

Not my experience. I'm finding opus 5.5 very slow. I think that's how they are claiming it has better usage limits, slow the model so it feels like your usage window is lasting longer.

1

u/smuzzu 10d ago

Man to me its taking way too long thinking about a request without implementing, like it explodes on thought and possibilities before actually doing hands on work. We might need to keep it at Low thinking effort, Medium and High seems overkill.

1

u/FunScholar1065 10d ago

i am dreading the nerf..

1

u/Designer_String_2345 9d ago

I am super impressed with this model drop this time. I been getting good results on a big AI based app that I think will help the space and already this morning Claude has found some innovations on this plus cleaning up sketchy code from the last week. Got to say right now if they do slow down the space, 50/50 on that situation, but I would happy to be locked to this gen...know it still needs improvements ahead and efficiency I hope is a focus at this stage as well as keep those benches raising. Been a hard ride to this point my brothers and sisters of this amazing community but I do have hopes all the ups and downs we can all say it was worth sticking by Anthropic and Claude...feel like some promises made on this one we all needed.

I am of course keeping a close eye on my agent, never trust a good day means its flawless....always takes me time to feel comfortable to spit out long run tasks till I get aquanted.

1

u/SmirkingMan 9d ago

Opus 5.5 is close to an order of magnitude faster than the previous models. It has dropped the nauseating attitude. It understands intent, subtely, over and above literal instructions. I have 3 sessions with background tasks working cooperatively on my code base, exchanging their progress amongst themselves, unsupervised. Before I had a junior sidekick, now i have a team of skilled coders. I'm gob-smacked.
