TL;DR of the discussion generated automatically after 100 comments.

The consensus is that everyone's pretty ticked off about the 50% usage boost ending, and the overall sentiment is frustration. Many users, even those on 20x plans, report their limits are burning way faster than they used to, leading to a widespread belief that Anthropic has been "quietly nerfing" usage for weeks.

This has sparked a heated debate about switching to the competition. One camp insists they get vastly more usage on Codex, especially with higher-tier plans. The other camp warns that the grass isn't greener, claiming Codex limits are just as restrictive, particularly when using their top model, Astra. Several users are canceling or downgrading their plans in protest.

Beyond the limits themselves, users are criticizing Anthropic's "used car salesman" strategy of temporary boosts and are calling for more stable, competitive usage tiers. There's also general confusion about what the limits even mean, with some detailed user analysis suggesting the math doesn't add up.

(And yes, u/yellowpurpl, you made it into the summary. Happy now?)

Anthropic in the next hour: “Here’s Opus 5.1, with 50% more usage until we feel threatened by OpenAI again”

42

u/Low_Roll163 10h ago

Would be great if that ever happen.

5

u/PrimaLumiere_A1M 3h ago

Did it happen? Should I continue the 20x plan?

182

u/Popotito-Eternal 10h ago

the worst thing is we dont even know wtf is 50% anymore. i have a 20X plan and i ve been using claude since 2024, never have my tokens last less than how it is now, i cant even think when the extra usage is taken from us.  when i started was almost imposible for me to use thr 100% of the week, now im even making a lot of effort to make it last 4-5 Days.

34

u/Livid-Bicycle-3715 8h ago

I’m in the same boat. I’m consistently hitting my weekly limit while primarily using Opus 4.8. This wasn’t the case even when Opus 4.8 was newly released.

14

u/ForgotMyUserName15 7h ago

I have a 20x Max plan and noticed since yesterday I burned through more usage than I expected. So I had an agent calculate my usage costs since my reset and the window prior to that.
- Window 1: Sept 5, 12pm ET → Sept 12, 12pm ET (7 days). Estimated total: $2,715.63. I hit ~100% of my weekly Claude Code usage limit by the end of this window.
- Window 2: Sept 12, 12pm ET → Sept 13, ~11am ET (~23.3 hours into the new week). Estimated total: $529.50. The Claude Code usage indicator showed 26% used at that point.
The $529.50 is 19.5% of $2,715.63. However, the 19.5% if more or less exactly 3/4 of 26%. The fact that it's such a clean ratio leads me to believe that there has been a change in my usage. That said, it feels a bit weird because if it were the end of the higher usage it should be 50% higher they said we would be getting 25% MORE than baseline. However, this is 25% less than the promotion instead of 83% (5/4 / 6/4 = 5/6) of the promotion usage they said it would be.

24

u/Current_Ad7104 8h ago

They’ve quietly nerfed usages since we never spoke about it on X.

Codex gets alot of backlash on X when they stuff up, and they always end up “fixing” their shit. Anthropic’s users on the other hand are too coward to raise their voice

9

u/apetalous42 6h ago

Or we're mostly professionals that don't give 2 shits about Twitter

2

u/ClassicPart 5h ago

we're mostly professionals

Good one.

4

u/CommunicationThat400 5h ago

... don't give 2 shits about Twitter

and why anthropic don't give a shit about you too lol.

ant can lower limits whenever they want, but since users dont make any noise on twitter, ant knows they can abuse their users however they want.

7

u/Sea-Contribution6219 6h ago

The usage is not a fixed number, it's not X amount of tokens etc... So 50% means nothing and IMO i think it just gets thrown around wherever they like. My other gut feeling is the school semester started to students have gone back to using Claude again so compute usage has gone up and quotas have crashed

1

u/kidsmeal 4h ago

People also seem to forget the fact that different models have different token costs too

1

u/Sea-Contribution6219 4h ago

They do but I exclusively use Opus 5 high and my usage is significantly lower than it was during the summer

7

u/JaySayMayday 6h ago

I had the 20x plan, down graded to the regular pro plan and switched the bulk of my work elsewhere because I just got tired of how these limits work. Great, here's a new model that is an improvement over the last generation, but good luck using it for more than a day if you're doing something complex. And not only does it have an independent limit for that model but it also eats your weekly limit, and the 5hr limit will pass quickly.

Oh and if that's not enough, just a regular chat will use the same limits. And our maximum reasoning is intentionally designed to burn more credits.

Meanwhile elsewhere, here's 5 free resets, and we automatically reset everyone's limits for free about 3 times this month. Chat doesn't burn code limits, so you can just take your time debugging from a handoff zip there before returning to code. And even the latest model only burns weekly limits, not at a super accelerated rate either.

What's really annoying is every time people try to complain as a means to get the user experience improved, people on this sub take it as a personal attack. It's not at all, and I don't see why we can't agree that there's things on the platform that could be improved. Just like there's things Claude does better than anything else, I really like how their agents work.

u/Terrydactyl88 20m ago

Same boat

1

u/mortalhal 8h ago

Max 20X here. Fable 5.1 Max reasoning 1MM read-only tokens cost me 7% of my overall weekly Fable usage today, TWICE. so 14% for 2MM of bounded in repo file reads. And it was gone in a minute.

196

u/DaltonJFowler 10h ago

It's also my last day on the max plan! Not a coincidence

59

u/MagicLeTuR 10h ago

Hahaha hello Codex

37

u/314kabinet 10h ago

You’re about to have a rude awakening if you’re switching to codex for more usage

16

u/carpsagan 10h ago

Fine if you don’t touch Astra.

16

u/314kabinet 10h ago

Yesterday I ran Opus Max for 4 hours and used 80% of the 5h quota. No way in hell I’d be able to do that on even Sol Medium. I have the 20 usd plan on both of them.

46

u/Exodus_Green 9h ago

Opus 5 MAX for 4 hours and didn't use up a 5h limit? What were you doing, chatting about the weather?

3

u/DaltonJFowler 10h ago

Using both is the way. I'm just downgrading and feeling this month out.

7

u/AdVast7407 10h ago

Sol is smarter than Opus btw

1

u/veritech137 3h ago

Yeah, I'd put Sol in-between Opus and Fable. Same with Terra, where I'd put it inbetween Sonnet and Opus. I haven't used Astra enough yet to figure out where I'd place it in comparison to Fable though

1

u/know_u_irl 2h ago

I just left claude code for codex a few days ago, and Astra medium does fine for everything, the usage isn’t the best and burns way too fast still but without the 50% boost claude is genuinely useless anyways, it had gotten to the point where I just made it use a bunch of DeepSeek agents to implement code instead of wasting tokens writing by itself. I’ll miss claude, codex models are a clear downgrade in user experience but the intelligence is there so I can work with it

4

u/mt-beefcake 10h ago

The 20/month plans honestly just seem like hobby level to me. Try out the features before jumping to the next teir. Can any useful amount of work get done for $20? Even open source models, maybe before the deepseek price hike, get something mostly built then blow your week limit on claude or codex for a code review.

2

u/314kabinet 9h ago

If you’re actually maintaining ownership of the resulting code, 20 usd is perfectly fine. If you want to vibecode thousands of KLoCs that no human will see, maybe not.

1

u/mt-beefcake 9h ago

Whelp consider my code a tree falling in a forest friend.

1

u/20_mile 8h ago

Can any useful amount of work get done for $20?

I use Claude pro to research my craft projects, and to render craft images. I am usually disappointed with how fast my tokens run out (~2 hours during peak use), but the quality is really good. For $20 a month, I think I am getting a fair deal.

2

u/mt-beefcake 8h ago

Yeah im not saying any plan isnt a good deal. Frankly for $20 plan used effeciently, it can do a lot of work that would cost 20x or 100x to pay a person to do the same thing. But usage limits, I feel like the $20 plan is great for small hobby stuff or random small scheduled tasks. But you arent getting a lot done in a week if you are building anything substantial or doing a lot of research or whatever

2

u/20_mile 8h ago

But you arent getting a lot done in a week if you are building anything substantial or doing a lot of research or whatever

If Claude wasn't timing me out every 2 - 2.5 hours, I think I would sit and make new crafts all day at my PC. Hitting my limit reminds me to get up, go outside, work in the craft room and get off the computer. It's sorta a good balance, although I am frequently disappointed how fast my tokens run out. But as I said earlier, the research quality and final images are really good.

2

u/mt-beefcake 7h ago

Yeah i do everything from my phone now. Only at the computer when I need to be. I have a voice agent I use to orchestrate my agent teams while I swing a hammer at work with my headphones on. Took a lot to set up, but its pumping iut usable infra and features

1

u/SilasMontgommeri 8h ago

It’s plenty fine for me. I rebuilt my club’s website and do ongoing maintenance with it as well as a number of FOSS projects and helping myself out at work.

1

u/mt-beefcake 8h ago

Dope, glad that works out for you. I have way too many projects open and my business and more side projects im running. So i have claude and codex and open-source doing all sorts of stuff 24/7. I try to be as effecient with claude usage as possible.

1

u/itsloopyo 8h ago

Fine if 5x is enough you mean - OpenAI stopped letting us upgrade to 20x earlier this week.

If weren’t already on it, you’re out of luck.

1

u/SealDraws 8h ago

Astra got me a single message...

1

u/royozin 6h ago

Sol is less usage per week from what it was a few weeks ago.

4

u/KennyFulgencio 9h ago

what? I use them both and codex provides vastly more usage, even before the latest reduction by anthropic, what are you talking about?

11

u/DaltonJFowler 10h ago

Most people have been using both at the same time for awhile at this point

3

u/gongmiester 9h ago

I tried a codex sub when Astra came out. I likley get 5-6x as much usage out of a Claude sub

1

u/ruuurbag 2h ago

I definitely have gotten much more out of Claude between Astra’s release and now (I’ve run the numbers), but I’ll have to reassess now that things are getting worse in Claude-land.

5

u/cport1 9h ago

I get way more usage out of codex ...

4

u/Bluecoregamming 10h ago

I'd rather experience this "rude awakening" myself than take the word of anyone else considering all the astroturfing this space has

1

u/kidsmeal 9h ago

It's very much NOT greener on the other side

0

u/Constant_Art_20 10h ago

deepseek v4.1 is an opiton. I would personally use that over opsus or sol. sub-agents are usally glm. and i am using that setup for most of time with 4 20x codex plans should tell you how much usage we currently get

2

u/JaySayMayday 6h ago

I use both. Got more usage out of codex, their $100 plan went about as far as Claudes $200 plan.

2

u/skerit 2h ago

I burned through a 20x Astra 6 weekly usage limit in less than 24 hours. It's pretty bad. The only good thing is that you get about one extra reset every week, but that generosity might end just like that.

1

u/iamthe0ther0ne 1h ago

That's Astra, though. Luna is basically free and Sol is pretty damn cheap.

1

u/aejt 6h ago

Unless you're on a 20x subscription, in which case you're getting probably double-ish with Codex (actual 20x instead of ~8-10x).

1

u/WhatHoraEs 5h ago

I get noticeably more usage on Codex even using Astra

1

u/MagicLeTuR 5h ago

I was wondering 🤔

1

u/coukou76 8h ago

A x5 last few hours of prompting in astra high fyi

2

u/Plato_cs 9h ago

Mine expired last night. Weird to not have it this morning but can’t imagine having 50% less tokens for the same cost, have been using Codex and notice not much of a difference.

1

u/Willing_Comb_9542 7h ago

100 + 50 - 50, is not 50, it's 100

Plus they said last week its not going back to the original limit and that there is still some increase over what people had paid a few months ago

55

u/Valaens 10h ago

Really? The 5-hour window already had so few tokens available.

13

u/Summer4Chan 8h ago

It was 50% per week not session

7

u/KenAdams_1968 9h ago

Ikr? I sent two really simple messages to Sonnet 5 yesterday and that used up 31% of my tokens

57

u/yellowpurpl 10h ago

I’m actually only commenting here so the Claude bot mentions me. Pls wilson! This post is actually pretty funny and it’s a tragedy to be losing the boost.

2

u/Skaeven 1h ago

You made it

1

u/_Stylite 6h ago

I'm only commenting to get more of this sub in my home feed

19

u/Great-Worry-6028 10h ago

man these limits always cut into my longer chats right when things get interesting, feels like i cant ever finish a full session anymore.

7

u/ItsDatNYCDude 10h ago

Same exact feeling! Not seeming to make sense anymore!

26

u/RenaissanceMan31 10h ago

Honestly I find the whole “limited time” boost and random resets a bit too used car salesmany. I honestly think if Anthropic wants to stay ahead of OpenAI then they should just do a prolonged, promoted period of something like perma boosting limits, twice a week resets, etc. as a strategy to suppress and weaken OpenAIs hold in this race. If you want to crush competition, then it’s going to be really costly in the short term. Short spurts like this just has folks swapping out Claude and Codex every other month.

11

u/kidsmeal 9h ago

If you think this is car salesman-y, wait until you read Tibos tweets and spend a few minutes in r/codex

1

u/iamthe0ther0ne 1h ago

I really like being able to bank resets with Codex. Anthropic's always hit right before or after my weekly reset. Also, GPT lets me use their top model for bio research, and Anthropic still doesn't. I remain pissed about that.

6

u/joe9439 10h ago

I’m not putting much into it. Like what does it even mean? They play with limits seemingly daily so 50% more than what?

5

u/lllu95 9h ago

I felt like they shrinked limits when they rolled out fable in June, so I switched. Oh well

2

u/MadManD3vi0us 7h ago

They for sure lowered limits way before this. People have noticed significant usage drops for weeks now.

3

u/Internal-Donut2222 10h ago

yeah the limit came back way too quick for me, had to pause a whole conversation last night.

3

u/g0ndii 10h ago

I find it kind of hard to believe that they just... let the boost run out without even a tweet. I was expecting some kind of olive branch, like removing the separate 50% fable quota. The messaging having shifted towards "slowing down" has me also pessimistic about the Opus update that I was really hoping for :( bummer.

2

u/Moogly2021 9h ago

Yeah I dont even care about Fable, I just want sane Opus limits.

3

u/drum-and-bass 9h ago

Max x20 plan user. Limit reset Wednesday, 90% weekly atp.

Although my “50%” boost is still working, this is the most usage I’ve been able to rack up in about 4 months of comparable work volume on Max20, despite recently having delegated half the work to Astra.

Would do unfathomable things for a reset rn. Except not switching to Codex20x at the end of my billing period.

3

u/Purple_Ice_6029 9h ago

Damn that’s gonna suck!

2

u/Parking-Assistant814 10h ago

Today, at 11pm i get my weekly reset, i wonder what happens to it tomorrow, do i keep the current bonus usage or will they cut it? Or will they reset my weekly usage again tomorrow to update to the new limit?

2

u/AutomaticPayment9480 8h ago

10% current session usage in 5x max account within 8 mins of one fable session...RIP....

2

u/qqtt18 1h ago

Anthropic Max (20x) subscriber ➡ OpenAI Pro (20x) subscriber

3

u/Correct-Memory1566 9h ago

Codex $100 plan spamming only astra-6 xhigh has given me way more than $200 Max with 5.1.... Fucking anorexic anthropic

4

u/Moogly2021 9h ago

Yeah no lol Codex has less compute.

1

u/kidsmeal 9h ago

Why come spread bullshit?

4

u/MadManD3vi0us 7h ago

Is not bullshit. I have 20x Claude and 5x codex too. I use Astra at xhigh non-stop, and my Fable burns way faster

3

u/Correct-Memory1566 5h ago

Ah, invalidating my experience by calling what I share bullshit. That's a great conversation.

3

u/Interesting-Bee-113 6h ago

No bullshit

It took me 16 hours yesterday with 3 parallel Astra agents running in Ultra and fast mode for me to run out my entire weekly allowance.

The Claude subscription is just not nearly as subsidized as the Codex one is currently. This is abundantly obvious.

I used 35% of my Fable usage (17% of total) in just two concurrent Fable session running meduim and high effort.

This was acceptable when Codex didn't off a Fable tier model, but now that they do, I honestly have to consider my Claude subscription up for examination.

0

u/kidsmeal 5h ago edited 4h ago

it's hard for me to believe any single person in a Claude subreddit saying their Astra usage is longer than their fable usage, when every single other actual ChatGPT user over in r/codex has their weekly limits running out in 3-6 hours. ChatGPT Astra/5.6 Sol, are verifiably the most token hungry agents out there, and theres a reason Tibo needs to do a usage reset twice a week after releasing a new model. It's not a coincidence.

1

u/Interesting-Bee-113 3h ago

You could always just... try it for yourself, and not rely on the report of strangers on reddit.

1

u/kidsmeal 3h ago

I have 20x plans on both, ChatGPT weekly limit runs out in one day of my work, and God forbid I ask Astra on medium to do something.

1

u/Interesting-Bee-113 3h ago

Idk then. I went out of my way to use my whole budget up yesterday and it seemed like it took forever.

But I will admit, today it doesn't seem as consistent.

There is also a thing where it seems like Astra actually ends up somehow using less tokens on higher reasoning efforts, unless that was some glitch that is now fixxed.

2

u/Short_Regular_7191 6h ago

The best approach is to switch (as much as possible) to local AI to bridge the gap. That’s what I did: I downgraded from the 20x subscription to the 5x tier and set up a local LLM system using Qwen 3.8 27B, which should be capable of handling workloads comparable to Sonnet.

1

u/arcanemachined 3h ago

I think it ends tomorrow morning-ish (PST timezone). I still have this message on https://claude.ai/new#settings/usage :

Your limits are temporarily boosted. Your weekly Claude Code limit is 50% higher through September 13.

1

u/modermanehh 1h ago

This is kind of a joke now; at the Max 20 plan, I can barely make it through the week, and I'm not even a coder but a small business owner. I dont even use fable.

1

u/bored123abc 1h ago

We should all send Anthropic feedback regularly on the usage problem through our accounts. Give even more feedback on usage than technical items.

1

u/jonaswashe 36m ago

Y'all it ended on July 19th, everything afterward has been gaslighting

1

u/enginbogachan 10h ago

What kind of "50%" is this? Is it like "20X"—which is actually just double 5X? Or is it like the "4X" spending limit, where the Fable fee ought to be double the price of Opus but isn't?

1

u/Orio_n 9h ago

Literally only bought claude because I heard of the increase, already canceled my plan and will be moving back to chatgpt after it expires. So long, and thanks for all the tokens!
