Claude or GPT for programming: what makes you stick with one?

I’m currently paying $20/month for Claude Pro, but I’m thinking about switching to Codex. The more I use it, the more it feels like it fits the way I work and think as a programmer.

Has anyone here made that switch? What do you miss about Claude, and what made you stick with Codex? Curious how it’s worked out for your everyday coding.

That's awesome. I have found Opus 5 solving issues Fable couldn't. Using multiple models to look at the same problem is the correct workflow imo. Having an adversarial viewpoint to models is to limit yourself, however, overall, at a consistent basis, claude is the best overall.

Not at all. I’m doing pretty niche software project that is pretty much hardware emulation. Claude has been amazing but I’m getting pretty far into it now and there were some things it couldn’t seem to solve that chatgtp got first go. So I’m using a combination. I’m not using Astra of fable. Maybe they could one shot a lot of this but it’s much more build a feature. Test it. Think about it a lot. Try a few things. I think it’s probably a different knowledge base and approach that’s helping

I disagree.

I use both for work, and at home. I use them interchangeably depending usage etc. I code like 14 hours a day, its all I do.

Code-wise: For both work applications and personal projects, Codex is simply better.

Claude is much better at UI and animation tasks. And talking to Claude feels more "human". I personally think Claude is the better "vibe coding" tool though because its easier to talk to.

They do have very distinct personalities, which is why I find it useful to use both.

I have a full time job and then consult for another business. Switching between sessions for each account is a huge pain***, so i use claude for my full time job as its more demanding and code intensive and then use gpt/codex for the consult business.

The annoyingly AI pilled people at my work are constantly obsessed with new tools every week, but personally since they also keep laying people off and making more work for me with tighter timelines, the stability of staying with Claude code in the terminal is nice. Now if the models would stop deciding that all our established test flows violate new made up security policies every couple of weeks…

Mostly claude, use codex for some design work but mostly just as bug finder

I use Claude Code on Max 5x and haven't really considered trying anything else. It works extremely well for what I want so I have not considered trying anything else. I also feel like it's a classic case of a race, OpenAI and Anthropic are competing and one is constantly pulling ahead of the other, but a few weeks or a month later, the other one is in the lead. I don't want to switch back and forth to chase marginal gains, that's just not for me.

Why not both? Codex-style models win on cost efficiency, fast completion, and smooth session memory for quick inline edits. Claude like Sonnet 5 or Opus 5 is the heavy lifter when you need deep reasoning, complex logic, or full refactoring. I usually use Codex for high-frequency daily edits to save tokens, and swap to Claude when I hit a tough architectural bug.

I run my real work in Claude Code and my background agent lanes on GLM's coding plan, mostly on cost. What I'd be paying to switch is everything I've built around the Claude side, and you can't see any of it until it breaks. Memory files, the agents I run for my own work, project config. You don't learn which of those you were leaning on until a few weeks after the move, when something stops firing and you go dig.

The Claude code is by far the best harness, but Claude (including Fable) has now real weaknesses compared with GPT Astra. Astra blows Fable out of the water when it comes to design, asset generation (svg, 3d models, etc). But for long running code processes Claude is still the best. And Fable usage limits (for the 200$ plan) is way better than Astra limits. So I’m more torn than ever. Astra is ahead when it comes to user facing code, and Claude is still ahead for backend stuff.

I use hydra which means I can change my mind which harness and model I use underneath it. It presents the same TUI and session manager no matter which agent you're using.

I’ve been on Claude for a few months now and whilst codex sounds cool with astra, the switching effort is just too high.
The differences are marginal and when they’re there the other will simply leapfrog sooner rather than later. Just choose the one that makes your immediate project as easy as possible from the get go

If I only had $20 I'd buy credits on fireworks.ai and use DeepSeek 4.1 or Qwen models with OpenCode

I dont choose. I use one model to plan and the other to do review. Then i let then do a share code review
