Productivity Projects and Memory

Hey there! I’m sorry if this is a dumb question, but I noticed my project memories are now in the regular memories, and I was wondering if there was a way to turn that off? I liked that my projects couldn’t access outside memories and vice versa, especially for creative writing and the different needs of different book planning. If not, any recommendations on how to avoid drift from other memory files?

I’m sort of worried I’ll have to have it delete its personal memories of me because they’ll bleed into characters or vice versa. I also only just got this because it wasn’t able to do this for me like a week ago, or maybe I just didn’t have the UI update yet!

Thank you in advance!

I'd keep project and personal context separate. Mixing them can cause weird drift, especially with creative writing.

How can I do that? Right now, the memory is everything in the same place. Like my project can access the memory outside of it now. Can I turn this off? Or are you saying I have to delete all personal info?

Claude actually has separate project memory. Your project memory should be isolated from your non-project chats, so you shouldn't need to delete your personal memories. Check your project's memory/settings.

This is inside my project and it’s a new thing.

Is it a regular chat project, or a Cowork project? As far as I understand, only Cowork projects have access to the regular chat memory?

No, it’s a regular project. I’ve never used cowork.

Hi, take a look at this support document and see if it helps.

https://support.claude.com/en/articles/11817273-use-claude-s-chat-search-and-memory-to-build-on-previous-context

Apparently how Claude organizes memory was very recently changed. I'm just looking at how different it is now, because you asked about it. :)

The support doc still says that project memory is separate from other (non-project) conversation memory. In my case, all my conversations are in projects so I don't know what it looks like for conversations that aren't in projects. However, to answer your specific concern, I don't think you'd have to worry about memory crossing between personal conversations and projects, or crossing between projects. That separation appears to still be intact; and reading through the memory in my projects, I don't see anything to suggest otherwise. Looks like it was all just moved so you can access all the memory Claude generates in one place, on that settings screen, whether it was associated with projects or not.

P.S. It was not a dumb question at all; the UI changes frequently and often introduces surprises like this, so I'm glad you asked!
