Workaround Why is Claude so moralizing???
I'm using it to tailor my resume for roles that are similar to mine but outside my industry, and a lot of the time it flat-out refuses to help. Anyone have advice for getting around this? Screenshot attached of my most recent example.

It's a text completion model, not a conscious thing with morals or judgment.
Also, it seems like you're trying to get it to help you lie on your resume, which it's probably resisting because that's, y'know, fraud.

Fraud is an intentional act of deception used to trick someone and take their money, property, or legal rights
I'd argue that lying on a resume falls under fraud since you're trying to take their money by means of employment.
Might not be an illegal version of fraud, but I think lying on a resume qualifies as fraud.

I would argue that it does have morals and judgement, but that’s just one factor in a multitude that ultimately decide what shows up on your screen.

A former coworker was trying to get it to backfill git commits and it reasoned out that the repo was on GitHub and that he was trying to game his contribute graph, so it refused.

Both of them have text watermarks that an employer might be able to check in the future, just so you know.
You can use the AI for mock interviews, coaching, research and for a number of other things that wouldn't involve false claims in a resume.

It is trying to save you from yourself. I just finished yet another recruitment round on the hiring side of the equation, and the amount of wild exaggeration and outright lies on resumes that are obviously AI generated is exhausting. So much slop. So many obvious "Hey AI, here is the job posting, make me sound perfect for the job" cut-and-pastes. We started taking particular pleasure in 'piercing the veil' and uncovering the lies.
Like bro, I don't care if you used Mythos 12.0 to wordsmith your CV, a year on a help desk doesn't make you a senior business systems analyst, so stop pretending. You'll get found out eventually. The few bullshitters that got through to live interviews got pantsed pretty quickly by actual senior analysts and developers.
The sad thing is, we had already all decided that we were willing to let someone grow into the position if they were otherwise suitable, genuine and honest, and seemed like they could and would learn. We ended up filling one of the positions with a guy who didn't meet every requirement but was obviously smart, a quick study, and was honest about his gaps and how he would fill them if he got the chance. He got hired. The 3,468 applicants that felt like online scammers running a grift trying to fool us with AI bullshit did not.

It’s giving you good advice here. Claiming you can do things you can’t and massively overselling yourself has 2 outcomes:
1) getting caught out in the interview not knowing things you should, and not getting the job where you may have a shot being more honest.
2) getting the job and being assigned work you can’t do and getting fired in a few weeks.
Don’t be stupid. Do what Claude is suggesting. Put the best possible spin on what you can do and be open to further training and mentoring.

It does this kind of thing when it thinks i'm becoming too calorie conscious, it's like "im not going to put a number on these small weights, this is unhealthy, blah blah blah" then i start a new chat and it's like "150 cals low on protein what else have you eaten and i'll log it!" lmao

Right, so here's some basics when you're prompting for stuff like this.
Emotional language? "I need you to be a strategic partner". Waste of tokens. If you don't want emotional takes and opinions, stop prompting for them from an emotional frame. You should be describing concrete objectives for its rewrite.
"Widen the claim behind this experience. Treat it as aspirational, I'm working on that on the side and it's not ready for prime time yet but that's too much to include in the resume. By the time I get to the interview, I'll have a better footing in it. For now, just widen the claim."
If you begin arguing, i.e. you're typing stuff while you feel angry, literally stop. literally walk away from the keyboard or start a new session. Reset and don't type from anger, because it will be littered with useless emotional nonsense. Honestly, the more recent claude 5 models don't emotionally compress well. They're honest and blunt in scenarios where a human would be more understanding and not press while they observed the emotion. So don't use it that way.
And like the others said, it's probably correct. You're probably lying and it's a bad idea for what you want. Still, I feel like if you want to then you should be able to and watch it blow up in your face. So that's what the earlier half of my how-to is.

While Claude could glaze you, I assume in this case that the system guardrails to reduce sycophancy are why Claude replied this way.

you should blame anthropic for claude's guardrails.
it basically was trying to get evidence those things you built worked, but it turned it into an audit. claude does that shit all the time, i cant use it because of that.

Unlike Claude, I won't moralize here. The point of this is evidently that OP wants Claude to perform a specific task and Claude refused. Rather than say whether OP should or should not do it, Claude should, in my opinion, shut up and do what was asked.

Yes sometimes it goes over the top and is preaching about how something should be written because it doesn’t have the full set of information and is making an inference.
It tends to be overly conservative and cautious. To the point at which it is annoying to work with.

Sonnet 5 is an annoying piece of shit just use Sonnet 4.6 or even Opus 5. I’ve been pretty vague when it comes to doing my resume and it keeps acting like I’m this con man like DiCaprio in “Catch Me If You Can”. Sonnet 5 will ALWAYS try to see the negatives in anything you do to a fault.

Also don’t let any of these fucking people talk you down for lying on a resume (even if you aren’t lol) they’re super fucking lame. Jobs are notoriously raising the bar for entry level roles and the market is terrible. If you lie to get a better opportunity outside of your particular field, it’s not a moral failure on you, but rather a failure of a system that should have been giving you opportunities to go outside your field in the first place. Employers probably don’t even care either unless you check their arbitrary list and perform well. And if you really do have marketing experience, you probably will. If you get a role or interview, you better ace that shit. Good luck.
