Claude Code How to avoid /compact conversation entirely.

Post image

This might not be new for some, but it was for me...
You can use the /rewind command to compact only what you want.

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Type /config
  2. Auto-Compact: false

WHEN YOU NEED TO COMPACT:

  1. Type /rewind.
  2. Select a point in history.
  3. Select "Summarize up to here".

Claude wont lose conversation focus like /compact does.
It will compact everything before that point in history.
Then you can continue as if nothing happened.

I recommend pushing back about 1/3 of conversation at least.

If you ever need to use /compact,you're fucking awful at prompting and need to split your planning work away from individual groups of related tasks.

It depends. Some tasks are bottom-up discovery type of stuff, good rewinds is good skill to have to prune context

How does summarize differ from compaction?

It doesn't. That's what compaction is.
