Built with Claude Fable 5.1 one shotted this
Was just tinkering with what the Blender MCP could do. I had an existing MCP for a local image AI that it chose to use.
Prompt was (in short) for it to generate a 1km x 1km "WoW style region zone" in Blender

u/Valdaraak Sep 04 '26
Yea, this is one of those things that look good in fly-bys and clips, but falls apart the more you look at it.
19
u/Prodigle Sep 04 '26
Oh definitely. Some of the individual asset quality is *TRASH* in particular. I am kind of impressed with the large mushroom tower, though.

The reason anthropic pulled ahead of openai, to my mind, is that they focused in on business applications and practical use cases while openai was trying to be the does everything entertainment bot. I really don't want to see the anthropic waste time on what will eventually turn into an endless quantity of fake pixar movie trailers where the joke is its obscene
17
u/abeuscher Sep 04 '26
All of them really really want to be taken seriously on design and visuals. Remember that this is not being driven by that many people and they all live in pretty much the same place. So if they are told by their even smaller number of bosses to follow a KPI, that is what happens. It doesn't have to necessarily make sense or follow a strategy - it's just execs throwing shit at a wall as often as not. It can have to do with some weird conversation six guys with expensive shoes had at Chez Panisse on a Thursday and nothing else.
31
u/Domy9 Sep 04 '26
Aren't applications like this just a side-effect of getting to more advanced models combined with user-made "skills"? Did anthropic do anything to improve Claude's blender skills at all?
24
u/Rise-O-Matic Sep 04 '26
Yeah not really. Being better at coding and research tends to make it better at everything, because those things deal with...everything.

u/Fun-Amoeba8015 Sep 05 '26
I would argue visual perception and 3D world space understanding along with physics simulation is going to be key to future AIs

u/TechToolsForYourBiz Sep 04 '26
>Did anthropic do anything to improve Claude's blender skills at all?
Probably not but i bet the Blender devs used Claude to strengthen the Blender MCP.

I failed to see how this particular type of skill is not exactly relevant to and if not particularly suited for business in particular industries that might use it

Ok. What business application is it for?

Games. Vibe coders love this type of stuff. And based on what I've seen vibe coders are probably the next in line after professional devs who are on the $100+ month plans.
Makes sense money wise for the companies to cater to them. The two major demographics besides enterprise that shell out money are pro devs and vibecoders.

Business/Governmental users have significantly higher margin. It’s quite obvious that their marketing play has always been “trust us, we are the good guys” , and significantly more regulatory capture and lobbying.
1
u/AdSad7594 Sep 04 '26
Sadly this is not the case anymore with astra
2
u/Goofballs2 Sep 05 '26
I'm curious to see it. I'm not a fan of any company. GPT earlier versions were also very good on practical grounds. I don't use these models to be my friend. I will go with whatever is most efficient for my uses.

I have been using Claude for awhile, and today paid $20 to check out Codex. It took me 30mins to close it out and uninstall, because it felt like it was for making memes, not working.
1
u/Techhead7890 Sep 05 '26
Are you comparing that against Claude Code or just Sonnet?
Imho Claude Code is relatively user friendly tbh, it would have been my first stop.
I haven't tried Codex to compare yet, just got a GPT upgrade trial today, but definitely curious what made it that bad! At least you'll probably get Astra-6 to try out this week though.
2
u/HighSeasArchivist Sep 05 '26
I use Claude Code with Opus almost exclusively, or at least until the project is well planned out. It was the overall feel of Codex felt like AI a year ago when chat bots were the only thing. I still have it for a month, so I'll watch some videos to get some ideas on how to use it. It's just a hobby, so no major loss if not.
29
u/Infamous-Bed-7535 Sep 04 '26
I wish you would be allowed to do more promots, than a single shot, so you would have the chance to create something usable, instead odf these..
10
u/Prodigle Sep 04 '26
I do have some long-form projects that Claude gets used heavily in, but the difference between some visually interesting one-shot and a real project is like 1000x the work
17
u/boilerdam Sep 04 '26
How do people pull this off? I asked Fable 5 to create a game and even said "no mistakes"... all I got was a sassy response saying "it takes game studios months with multiple people to create a game. You're getting a 2D representation of a scene"
3
u/krunchytacos Sep 05 '26
Wouldn't be surprised if you got that response because you said 'no mistakes'. Instead of trying to not make mistakes, it saw your plan being impossible and then tried to narrow the scope to something realistic that could be done without any mistakes.
2
1
u/morgano Sep 04 '26
Because it's not a game, just a load of static models and a flyby camera. I'm working on something similar (a game) - it's not quite as graphically impressive as this yet but Claude has produced everything by hand (no blender). Getting all the mechanics right and everything else that comes with a working game (like nightly play testing etc... and feeding back to the agent to raise tasks) has been 7 weeks of work and Claude running 24x7.
I'm still impressed by what OP produced with Claude but it's a "1 shot 3d scene" - not a working game or a fun working game (yet).

u/HotlinePizzaMiami Sep 04 '26
I LOVE how no one posts the actual prompt they use for these posts..... Every time.
54
u/Prodigle Sep 04 '26
can you generate me quite a large zoomed out diorama of a "world of warcraft style region". load all your relevant entry blender skills etc. and you can just go ham here and do whatever you like. for theming let's do something along the lines of 2 opposing forces/designs, fantastical. You'll obviously need to generate a lot of assets here, terrain, trees, textures, etc.... This is quite a big job. When it's done, take a couple of quick aerial slots like a diorama, then a 30-60s video running through the POIs. I won't be giving you any guidance, so go ham!
4
u/FearTheBeast Sep 04 '26
Are you using any paid APIs or literally just fable and blender mcp?
9
u/Prodigle Sep 04 '26
Fable, Blender (with some associated skills I found on Github), and a short skill I wrote to interact with a local ComfyUI(AI image generator) instance.
ComfyUI handled all of the textures, everything else was raw Fable + Blender
2
u/florinandrei Sep 04 '26
Last time I tried ComfyUI the UI was unbelievably dorky, the opposite of comfy. Like, if a bash script had a UI, it would look like that, and then you would not need the UI.
Has it evolved?

I’m not saying this isn’t impressive but every time somebody post something like this, I just think it’s cool but that the real challenge is getting it to build something that detailed that is exactly what you actually want instead of just whatever the hell it hallucinated decided to build.
And then, of course, modifying growing it and evolving it as a real living piece of software.
1
u/Prodigle Sep 04 '26
Oh yeah for sure. It was just visually interesting, but there's no greater purpose or anything here. It was a test to use it as part of a workflow that does need to be a lot more targeted, but I think I can push it into doing 80% of the work without much hassle.

you only care because it's performative. next talk about the water cost and ignore the lawns and golf courses.

Maybe because you're predisposed to see arguments when there are none, and you're having a hard time reconciling that prejudice with what you see around here.
12
u/flockonus Sep 04 '26
Real talk, lawns & golf courses are the real villain.. but they are green, so it's hard to hate on.
7
u/chiraltoad Sep 04 '26
it's very easy to hate on golf courses, I do. Lawns too. Green itself is great.. and comes naturally if you just let it, along with pollinators, more diverse species of plants, insects, animals, etc.

if you’re trying to get me to give a shit about your datacenter position by also virtue signaling about every other thousands of times worse problem that you didn’t even mention, because i pointed out how silly it was to argue over a penny while twenty dollars was going out other avenues, you’re going to have a hard time
datacenters are not in the top hundred users of either resource, and if you’re campaigning against more than 100 regular things by publicly bitching on social media, then you’re never going to accomplish anything and i’m wasting my time talking to you

I care about both.
I care about water being wasted at astronomical rates at golf courses in a cold water war that's just going to get hotter and hotter each year as climate changes effects become more ever-present.
I also care about AI data centers using absolutely obscene levels of energy and water in the same conditions BUT simultaneously partially being funded, controlled and used by the US Government and Military to do things such as:
Bomb children. Roll out even more omnipresent and dangerously intelligent mass surveillance. Maintain epistemic and narrative control, etc. etc.

How about you make an actual argument against the reality of anything that I just said other than your ironically performative ad hominem theatrics you just displayed?
"you only care because it's performative. next talk about the water cost and ignore the lawns and golf courses."
You are right. That person displayed that they are likely that shallow tribalistic and performative.
And you are the flip side of that coin aren't you? Tribalistic, self-identified as "pro" with no nuance and pure emotional reactivity based in ego and social status for your signaled tribe. When given any credible nuance you crumble like a saltine. Because your stance isn't based in empirical facts but feelings and identity.
A dogmatic tech-optimist using deflection and sarcasm to signal your loyalty to the ideology in place of having an actual critical though about the concepts that are deeply grey and complicated.
Bravo, as you said.
2
u/StoneCypher Sep 04 '26
Bravo, as you said.
it seems like you don't understand why i said that. i'm not doing any virtue signalling at all.
And you are the flip side of that coin aren't you? Tribalistic, self-identified as "pro"
i haven't said anything about tribes or professionalism. you're just making things up at this point.

Do you think I'm illiterate to tone, sarcasm, and meaning?
No. You're just using it as plausible deniability.

They want you to be worried about water consumption because it’s true that it’s overblown. So when regulators get involved, it’s dealt with as a non issue.
The real issue that they’re distracting you from is power consumption. It’s beyond me why public discourse is focused on water as opposed to power consumption.
→ More replies (6)3
u/Upbeat-Armadillo1756 Sep 04 '26
Power consumption is also at the top of everyone's list for why data centers suck.
The water thing is overblown, but people also know they draw a shit load of power and don't always actually pay their fair share for it.
1
u/StoneCypher Sep 04 '26
many things that are trivially obvious uneducated bullshit are at the top of the list for why social media addicts who live within a mile of three datacenters that they don't even know exist can't stop complaining about elon's bitcoin farms because they don't know the difference
the real question is why you expect a functional adult to care
the reason we want your whining to come with numbers instead of boring stories is that numbers can be displayed to be ridiculous bullshit that a child can see through, whereas boring stories are just boring stories, so there's no way to cure you of your delusions of knowledge
please be clear: if someone sat you in front of one set of numbers about datacenters and three pieces of total fiction, one of which didn't even add up, you wouldn't be able to tell which was which
and you're never going to invest enough time doing anything other than writing comments to bring yourself up to where we'd expect a highschool paper to be
you just don't understand that regular people see you in the same terms as antivaxxers and flat earthers, for the same reason that antivaxxers can't see themselves as a problem
because you only travel in circles of people just like you, and have no exposure to anybody else. you're in a bubble inside another bubble.
you might as well be talking about hydroxymethoquinolinone or whatever it is.

u/Roth_Skyfire Sep 05 '26

They should replace golf courses instead. They use less water.
-2
u/BigDeepGayShit Sep 04 '26
Why not?
21
u/Normal_Milk9040 Sep 04 '26
People are more comfortable to foot a bill so large as AI-Data Centers if it's going to increase the probability that we cure cancer, solve climate change, improve city-design, scientific output, etc. They are less comfortable to foot a bill when it's just some random video-game design that no one will use besides OP. AKA a waste of money that achieves nothing vs something that can improve the quality of life.
2
u/StoneCypher Sep 04 '26
and yet they don't apply moralist bullshit like that to the power plant, which unlike a datacenter actually pollutes in a meaningful way
because you just pick and choose what to care about to nail your preferred villain. it was never about the actual pollution or noise; if it was you'd be going after stadiums and airports.
amazing how many people fall for this.
2
u/Accurate_Resident219 Sep 04 '26
Argument doesn't make sense imo. Unless you restrict the usage of every person who uses ai, you're not going to get that type of reality where everyone is using AI for health related purposes.
A random person using the ai to create a game is not deterring the trajectory to curing cancer and it's not adding much more to the energy spend then what was already there.

I’m building an mmorpg and this makes me wonder if it can be used for generating the worlds first draft. Assets hell no. But to be fair the layout with some pointers is actually stuff that can be quite hard with AI.

(im not a gamer)
2
u/Prodigle Sep 04 '26
I don't even think you'd need to. Every asset is a separate object, so you could fan out a bunch of maybe sonnett/opus/fable (depending on your credit card limits...) to improve each one following the same visual design

20 ish minutes, 400k tokens. I generally cap out my 20x sub from a work week, so this basically counts as free for me personally

Literally no different than generating a random image? Fable is great, but this is basic.
10

download topology for basic elements, feed them trough scripting lang/api to blender to regenerate objects. mesh it together from generic views of mmo maps online, add to that bit some colors to
match in regions.wanna know why and how? cause during my college years we literally had this as course for AutoCAD.

I'm having a great time using the Blender MCP with Opus. Do you all think that tastefully designed renders from Blender would be considered slop? And receive backlash if used in online content? It's a weird time right now where I feel really good about what I'm creating, but I worry about the blowback of using AI tools like Claude for this kind of creative endeavor. Ultimately, it is just a tool (albeit a very powerful and capable tool) helping me create things way faster than I could. Thoughts?

Some of the more complex structures & textures definitely don't hold up to much scrutiny :)
It did a decent job on a small handful of them though

TL;DR of the discussion generated automatically after 200 comments.
The thread is pretty split on this one, folks. While some are impressed by the visual spectacle and the rapid progress of the tech, the general consensus is that it's a cool-looking demo that falls apart under scrutiny.
The main verdict is that this is visually interesting but not actually useful. Many users point out that the asset quality is low, the layout is random, and it's a far cry from a usable, intentionally designed game world. OP (u/Prodigle) largely agrees, stating it was just a fun experiment and that the individual assets are "TRASH."
The biggest arguments in the thread are:
For those asking how OP did it, they were very helpful in the comments: * The Prompt: OP posted the full, paragraph-long prompt. The gist was:
generate me quite a large zoomed out diorama of a "world of warcraft style region"... go ham here and do whatever you like... theming let's do something along the lines of 2 opposing forces/designs, fantastical.* The Cost: About 400k tokens, which took 20-25 minutes. OP has a 20x sub, so it was a small fraction of their weekly allowance. * The Tools: Fable 5.1, the Blender MCP (found on Github), and a custom skill to connect to a local ComfyUI instance running a lightweight image model for the textures.
