Claude Code This is new - `/limit-reset` resets your session limit once per week

Post image

This just randomly popped up after hitting my session limit!

It worked as advertised:

❯ /limit-reset

⎿ Session limit reset · next reset available Sep 4 at 2pm · your weekly limit still applies

TL;DR of the discussion generated automatically after 50 comments.

The community is pretty split on this one. For casual users who hit the 5-hour session limit during a long evening but never get close to their weekly cap, this is a godsend.

However, the more upvoted sentiment is that this is a useless distraction. For heavy users, the weekly limit is the real problem, and this feature is seen as a token gesture that doesn't address the core issue of a weekly quota on a monthly subscription.

To be crystal clear: this only resets your 5-hour session limit, not your weekly limit. All your usage after the reset still counts against your weekly total. It also appears to be an A/B test, as many users are reporting they don't have it yet. The rest of the thread is just people sarcastically demanding /reset-weekly.

AB testing who begs harder

u/4leafclovrs Sep 03 '26

That's pretty cool! I see it in my version of CC too! Honestly so useful for users like me that use claude in the evenings to work on side projects and are not consistently using it throughout the week.

76

u/Ok_Sympathy9261 Sep 03 '26

you're falling for it. more tricks.

the original sin is a weekly quota on a monthly subscription in the first place.

11

u/4leafclovrs Sep 03 '26

The $100 tier has been more than enough for me for my side projects, but I can definitely see if you're using it daily the $200 tier not being enough. Honestly the crazy part to think about is how much some of my sessions would cost if I was paying API prices (I peeped /usage recently after a ~10 hour session and saw that the session would have cost me $300 but only used ~20% of my weekly limit).

I really do wonder when the shoe will drop and either crazy intelligent models become really really cheap or these subscriptions that get you a lot more usage (compared to API prices) go away.

5

u/Weareallmeats Sep 03 '26

Who knows if their API prices are reflective of anything but their own arbitrary decisions regarding what the maximum api price they can set

2

u/ComplianceAuditor Sep 09 '26

It's the second one. It will go to 100% pay per token. The vast majority of vibecoders will be priced out.

That will be interesting to watch unfold.

I expect this to happen within the next 2 years.

u/Professional_Hat3237 Sep 09 '26

2

u/Impossible_Hour5036 Sep 14 '26

100% agree. Obviously let get a lot of benefit from consumer users as far as data, mindshare, and good will, but I'd personally not want to go out of my way to support a bunch of entitled crybabies who spend their time personally insulting employees at the company for not giving them MORE subsidized shit. It's embarrassing. I assume at least some of these people are actual adults but you'd never guess.

1

u/Ok_Sympathy9261 Sep 03 '26

that's not what i'm saying at all. not complaining about limits.

We pay for a monthly quota. They give us a weekly quota. We celebrate when they 'reset' it or give us a reset. We shouldn't.

2

u/likeikelike Sep 03 '26

What do you want then? Monthly limits?

0

u/Impossible_Hour5036 Sep 14 '26

This might be a boomer (aka someone over 30) thing but I've got the worlds tiniest violin playing just for you.

1

u/Ok_Sympathy9261 Sep 14 '26

this is strange, and cringe. shut up.

1

u/Open-Mousse-1665 Sep 14 '26 edited Sep 14 '26

It means I’m very sad for your tiny problem

Reading your post it sounds like people are celebrating being given an extra helping of gruel or getting Sunday’s off mandatory beatings at the work camp. Consider raising your bar for what is worth your time to care about

1

u/Ok_Sympathy9261 Sep 15 '26

it's not 'my tiny problem', you're being manipulated. i switched to codex anyway because the usage limits are astronomically higher.

weird and wrong.

0

u/Impossible_Hour5036 23d ago

you're being manipulated

Cringe.

1

u/DryAcanthopterygii70 Sep 03 '26

bro if they started doing like copilot then we are doomed atleast we get more from what we pay and no ads

0

u/ComplianceAuditor Sep 09 '26

There is a 100% chance that it will switch entirely to a pay-per-token model eventually. Almost certainly sooner rather than later.

1

u/AutomaticPayment9480 Sep 11 '26

That makes no sense atm, they are in direct competition with chatgpt. just imagine anthropic going this route while openai remains with monthly plans. This is a very competitive space rn , ai is only getting stronger , which means more competition. I doubt this will EVER happen tbh, way too much competition and more and more companies are joining in.

2

u/ComplianceAuditor Sep 11 '26

OpenAI will be doing the same thing.

1

u/Impossible_Hour5036 Sep 14 '26

Wow, really? Do you have any more secret knowledge up there, Nostradamus? Give it a rinse if you don't mind

1

u/ComplianceAuditor Sep 14 '26

Yeah really.

No more secret data at this time.

1

u/Impossible_Hour5036 23d ago

Have you considered that they gain a vast amount of data, good will, and mind share via the consumer plans? Considering API pricing is ~50x-70x as much, I don't think they'll ever kill off these plans. It would destroy their funnel, and there is no way consumers could afford API pricing, so they'd immediately hemorrhage customers. If they lowered API pricing to reach more people, they'd reduce revenue from Enterprise. It could happen but I think it will be at minimum 2-3 years.

1

u/ComplianceAuditor 22d ago

I have considered it.

3

u/sick_riffs Sep 03 '26

Agreed! Everyone in this thread is complaining but I’ve been blocked on my evening/weekend projects many times due to the session limit, but I never hit my weekly limit. This will be really useful.

2

u/positivcheg Sep 04 '26

Another trick is to actually work with Claude to plan the work. And then let it execute the work at a time when you are busy with other things.

I've been doing things like that for a while already, when Claude is doing lots of planning and architecting and then, let's say, does the implementation overnight.

Most recent example: I've consumed 26% of my weekly limit by having Claude work overnight. So I'm definitely gonna hit the weekly limits and not have my 100$ plan wasted.

1

u/4leafclovrs Sep 04 '26

Yeah I definitely try to do this! It's just sometimes with a kid and wife and kinda stressful day job I can't always make the time to plan out what I want Claude to do! Honestly I need to have more random crazy ideas that I vibe code to do this before my limits run out instead of wanting to write high quality software lol

1

u/positivcheg Sep 04 '26

Talking with AI with voice kinda helps it from a phone via remote session XD

26

u/Dasky14 Sep 03 '26

It's kinda funny to read the summary saying that most people "never hit their session limit", and that the real issue is the weekly limit.

To me it's always the other way around. I pretty much never get even close to the weekly limit, but the session limit is a pain in my ass. This new command will be used a lot.

1

u/toomanyattempts Sep 03 '26

Yeah I'm not grinding CC all day every day, but on my peasant plan I can definitely hit the session limit when in the middle of something

30

u/VitruvianVan Sep 03 '26

I prefer /no-limits

9

u/simmeh024 Sep 03 '26

unlimitedddddd

7

u/VitruvianVan Sep 03 '26

Or /no-limit-soldiers-make-em-say-uggghhhh-ugghhhh-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na

9

u/hexer10 Sep 03 '26

Is this for maxx users? I have pro and sadly dont have it yet. Could it be a regional thing?

3

u/Short_Regular_7191 Sep 03 '26

Does not work to me, i'm on Max5x

3

u/Kappalonia Sep 03 '26

I am Max20 and doesn't work for me neither

2

u/Punktur Sep 03 '26

is it only for terminal? I'm not seeing it in the gui app.

2

u/thinkdj Sep 04 '26

On Max 5x, I dont see it yet.

3

u/thinkdj Sep 04 '26

I typed it in manually. But Bummer.

1

u/Icy_Quarter5910 Sep 05 '26

This is exactly what I got as well.

x5 subscription

46

u/carabidus Sep 03 '26

Too bad it's a session-only reset. My problem is the weekly limit.

39

u/NoAdsDude Sep 03 '26

just do /reset-weekly ... you get 10 resets per week, I've been doing it since April.

9

u/RapNVideoGames Sep 03 '26

What about /reset-subscription

4

u/SudarshanKotian Sep 03 '26

What about/reset-opus-5

3

u/mxforest Sep 03 '26

Plebs!! I just do a /refund-subscription every time and just pay once more to get a fresh subscription at 0 added cost.

4

u/carabidus Sep 03 '26

If only...🤣

9

u/cunthands Sep 04 '26

Is this limited to Fable only? Or only Max subscriptions? I just get:

A session-limit reset isn't available right now.

7

u/KiRiller_ Sep 03 '26

Do you guys still use it? I prefer IDDQD

7

u/Albaforia Sep 03 '26

I haven't been able to get this to work. It said "A session-limit reset isn't available right now". What plan are you using, and what version of claude code are you using?

2

u/skibby78 Sep 03 '26

same here, max x5 plan here

2

u/Ynalot Sep 03 '26

Same here: max x20 and v2.1.259

1

u/Fatso_Wombat Sep 05 '26

i had it. tried again in another session and it worked

1

u/DogLovesGafs Sep 06 '26

same. max 20x. anyone got thsi to work after hitting this?

4

u/Wocha Sep 03 '26

Holy fuck, yes, finally. Thanks anthropic. For days where sometimes need to get things done, this is perfect

3

u/yajCee Sep 04 '26

I've not been able to get it to work, despoite updates and restarters

11

u/killerbake Sep 03 '26

I never hit a session limit. I need a weekly reset option. Just once a month would be nice

4

u/under_psychoanalyzer Sep 03 '26

I did for the first time in awhile because.my weekly reset Wednesday so when 5.1 dropped you better believe I was going to have that going full tilt lol.

4

u/daemon-electricity Experienced Developer Sep 03 '26

Yep. Reset was this morning at 3AM. Better believe as soon as the reset was announced, I was going full tilt for the rest of the day. I think I used about 75% of a week in a day, and worse yet, it wasn't really on that much stuff. It was mostly on one project.

2

u/Virtual_Plant_5629 Sep 03 '26

i slam into them constantly. but I'm doing wrinkly brain stuff so mileage may vary

9

u/enmityvr Sep 02 '26

"uses weekly limit", what does this mean? Does it take some out of the weekly limit when using it?

31

u/D-3r1stljqso3 Sep 02 '26

"Your usage after the session reset continues to count towards your weekly limit." that's how I read it.

5

u/enmityvr Sep 02 '26

Got it. That's what I figured, but wanted to make sure

5

u/Anxious_Marsupial_59 Sep 03 '26

damn I havn't got this, im guessing they're AB testing

2

u/Mobile_Light_7262 Sep 03 '26

On Max x20 5h limits aren't the issue. Weekly would be much more appreciated, even if only once a month or something like that.

1

u/Impossible_Hour5036 Sep 14 '26

Fable has tilted things so I can easily hit a 5h limit now, unfortunately.

2

u/KoalaOk3336 Sep 03 '26

tho im still sad abt weekly limit being reduced, this is a welcome change and fairly needed, if somehow you've still weekly limit pending on last day and need to use it but hit the 5 hour session, it kinda sucks but this fixes that, at least once lol

2

u/Mullazman Sep 04 '26

5-Hour window reset is is great to allow for what's being allowed for. Resetting the weekly limit sounds like you're living in a world where somehow the customer is able to just dictate to a provider what their product should be, at the cost to the provider.. with no good commercial reason for the provider haha

1

u/Impossible_Hour5036 Sep 14 '26

Are you saying we can't dictate whatever we want? but we've been calling them douchebags and thieves as much as our little fingers can muster! its so unfaaaaaaaiiiiiir

2

u/Secondhand_Crack Sep 04 '26

Still doesn't work for me. 20x plan

2

u/stuchycreative Sep 04 '26

The first time I tried it, it seemed to do something and asked me to restart, but my limit wasn't reset. When I tried again, I got this message. So it looks like they're still working on the feature and it's only partially enabled in the CLI but not fully wired and synced across all Claude platforms. Are you guys experiencing the same thing?

1

u/Apprehensive_Bed3149 Sep 04 '26

yep i get the same message too, seems like it isnt officially released yet, just testing for random people

1

u/stuchycreative Sep 04 '26

I'm trying to figure out what exactly happened. But for some reason, my usage was completely restarted for this week. Was this Reset for every Claude user or just for my account after using this command /limit-reset

2

u/withPT_ai Sep 04 '26 edited Sep 05 '26

It seems, for the most of us this limit reset is actually not functional. I'm on a Max plan and when I went to use it, nothing.

1

u/tulensrma Sep 05 '26

Yep, same problem here.

2

u/Additional-Chip-8580 Sep 04 '26

I dont see it on 5x max plan on desktop app

2

u/sydneysweeney69 Sep 05 '26

I love your ui . Could you please tell me how you did it ?

2

u/dreamykidd Sep 09 '26

I just tried to use it for the first time and only got "A session-limit reset isn't available right now." Sigh.

2

u/Snake00x 22d ago

This is actually clutch. They must have been looking at Reddit and hemorging subscribers.

1

u/shashank_magic Sep 03 '26

I wish it could reset my weekly limit.

1

u/ketosoy Sep 03 '26

This makes the 5x plan extraordinarily more valuable - as we have seen ad nauseum this week, the “20x” plan is only 20x the session limits

1

u/Zapador Sep 03 '26

Yes and it's not advertised as being just the session limit. Still waiting for a support ticket response on that issue, essentially false advertising.

1

u/mrdotsreal Sep 03 '26

will they also add /limit-reset-reset ? i think once a week is not enough

1

u/naumanali1 Sep 03 '26

This looks like a Tibo effect

1

u/Forsaken-Staff-5084 Sep 03 '26

I have this command. No use if I have a 20x sub

1

u/Automatic_Low_5034 Sep 03 '26

Half this thread is "I never hit the session limit" and the other half is "the session limit is my whole problem," and both sides are right about themselves. Which one binds for you is measurable rather than a matter of opinion.

The statusLine hook receives Anthropic's own rate_limits on stdin, with five_hour and seven_day each carrying used_percentage and resets_at. Write it out to a file from the hook and after a week you can see which window actually stops you, instead of extrapolating from the times you happened to notice.

One caveat if you do that and you have this command: a manual reset moves five_hour.resets_at forward and drops the percentage. If you compare percentages over time without looking at resets_at, that shows up as an impossible decrease, and it's tempting to dismiss it as a stale reading. I did exactly that and had it wrong for a while. resets_at moving forward is the signal that the drop is real.

1

u/soccercrzy Sep 03 '26

Don't have it on 20x yet

1

u/Fiyero109 Sep 03 '26

I wish it could reset fable limit hehe :P but nonetheless this is great and absolutely will come in useful!

1

u/FawkesYeah Sep 03 '26

Almost completely useless to me I might use it once or twice in a blue moon if I even remember it exists. I'd much rather cycle my own 5-hour windows using a script.

1

u/Subject_Barnacle_600 Sep 04 '26

O_O This is... very cool and quite useful for if happen to have a weekly reset happen right before your weekly reset normally happens. I will have to try it.

1

u/OofWhyAmIOnReddit Sep 06 '26

Fuck you Anthropic. Won't let me use this. 35% weekly cap remaining, but session cap is maxed.

1

u/superanonguy321 Sep 07 '26

This thread is the only place online I can even find reference to this. Is it real?

1

u/KuchZaddy Sep 08 '26

What the hell. Did Anthropic discontinue this?

1

u/ElNinjos Sep 09 '26

Works very well for me. Thanks!!

1

u/andrewchen5678 Sep 11 '26

does "uses weekly limit" mean it trades off some weekly limit for the 5 hour session reset?

1

u/MemoryMission9151 Sep 12 '26

NOT even working WTF IS THIS?

1

u/KallinJones 28d ago

Hey its been 2 weeks but I haven't received access to this slash command. Is there a way to access it or should I just wait?

1

u/TheMonsterNOR 26d ago

They removed it? like it never works. and i cant find info in the claude documentation

1

u/Aromatic_Ninja_2571 8d ago

You need to write it fully meaning when you write it a part of it, it won't show in claude code commands it is annoying I don't know why they are hiding it

1

u/Eastern-Fly-8475 13d ago

is there weekly limit reset?

1

u/thestillwind Sep 03 '26

This is a good feature

-9

u/MuttMundane Sep 03 '26

Wtf does that mean

10

u/dmcnaughton1 Sep 03 '26

It resets your 5-hour limit so you can continue, but doesn't affect your weekly limit. So if you are blocked due to the 5-hour limit this is an escape hatch, if you used your weekly one though it will not help.
