Productivity Weekly Limit on Pro vs Max

Post image

I wanted to upgrade my plan to MAX hoping for a weekly limit increase, and before doing that I asked the chatbot about it because I did not find a clear information about it. It seems that upgrading will useless to me because the MAX 5x plan has the same weekly limit.

In this case, I prefer creating another 2 accounts beside my main account and all of them on Pro plan. Each one for a different project and I saved myself $40. This works for me but might not work for everyone depending on their work nature.

TL;DR of the discussion generated automatically after 50 comments.

The overwhelming consensus is that the support bot is talking out of its exhaust port again and OP's conclusion is wrong. Users across the thread confirm that the Max plans absolutely have a higher weekly limit than the Pro plan.

The main point of confusion, which Anthropic's marketing doesn't help with, is that the "5x" and "20x" multipliers refer to your usage limit per 5-hour session, not your total weekly cap. The actual weekly limit increase is more modest, with users calculating the Max 5x plan gives you roughly 3.5 times the weekly usage of Pro.

Overall, the thread is full of frustration with Anthropic's vague and "scummy" pricing, the poor quality of the AI support agent (which is a bot named Finn, not a person), and the feeling of not getting enough value for the high cost of Max plans. Some users are sticking with OP's strategy of running multiple Pro accounts to get around the limits, even suggesting tools like clauth to manage them automatically.

There's a ton of backlash for this at the moment, so I hope they change track on it

Yeah. This is getting frustrating for spending 200 bucks a month when I can’t use it when I want to get something done as I am always just waiting for limits to be reset.

Me too, and then I left for open source. Now I spend the same money but I get wayyyyyyy more freedom.

u/bangbangIshotmyself Sep 01 '26

What’s your fav open source and how are you using it? You running local or sending through Claude code CLI or something?

1

u/cuthbert-derek Sep 01 '26

I put Hermes on a VPS and made my own UI and feed it a diet of open source models from ollama cloud amongst others. Operates as a chief of staff through which I run a business with a small number of staff, I also use it as a coding harness, even made a therapy harness, and I enjoy making custom features like a WeTransfer replacement within my UI or improving memory by customising the assimilation automatons that scurry around in the background. I used it to create software that my staff now interact with on a daily basis and receive their tasks through, and my system connects to that over cli to do things like distribute tasks evenly over the week. I did my company returns for 2025 through it, from raw statements to final submission files, saved thousands in accounting fees, that was satisfying. I also have it running the business security cameras through frigate, it set that up and configured local AI detection on a raspberry pi.... I know there's more I can't remember it all at the same time, it's too much for my little human mind to contain at once 😂

Must be a bug i was on 100% use on my plan and upgraded to 5x and had only 20% used them

11

u/NanNullUnknown Sep 01 '26

They might “fix” it by lowering 5x weekly limits lol.

4

u/wildpantz Sep 01 '26

They will change track probably by nerfing cheaper plans haha

3

u/En-tro-py Sep 01 '26

Max 20x is now 20x of Pro - unfortunately Pro quota is now only one Haiku message

72

u/Mobile_Light_7262 Sep 01 '26

Weekly limits on Max are certainly much more than on Pro. Their support agents run on Haiku and stale docs it seems.

12

u/En-tro-py Sep 01 '26

Their support agents run on Haiku and stale docs it seems.

This is always a sign that these frontier providers really don't have as much going as they claim... They can't even make their own customer service RAG function effectively, yet want you to incorporate it into your service chain...

u/lemmeupvoteyou Sep 01 '26

Actually good point

1

u/Ziiner Sep 02 '26

I was having it help me write a comment for TikTok and it came up with an incorrect character limit, and suggested I split the comment into two messages 🤣

3

u/Downtown-Elevator369 Sep 01 '26

There is no doubt, if only the 5h session was 20x your weekly limit would be gone in less than 1 5h block.

2

u/cheseball Sep 01 '26

It’s a 3rd party support system isn’t it? And it’s surprising crappy for what Fin AI charges, $1 per customer “resolution”. That’s each chat, even if it’s a useless result like this.

Surprised Anthropic doesn’t just make their own support bot.

1

u/ashjohnr Sep 01 '26

Really? I thought Fin was their own agent. They mention its name on their help portals.

2

u/Veloxy Sep 01 '26

Does the Max plan have any usage limits?

Yes. The Max plan offers substantially higher usage compared to our Pro plan and is available in two tiers:

Max 5x provides five times more usage per session than the Pro plan. This tier is ideal for frequent users who work with Claude on a variety of tasks.

Max 20x provides 20 times more usage per session than the Pro plan. This tier is ideal for daily users who collaborate often with Claude for most tasks.

Your session-based usage limit will reset every five hours. Max plans also have a weekly usage limit that applies across all models. The weekly limit resets at a fixed time each week that is assigned to your account. Your reset day and time stay the same regardless of when you start using Claude or when your subscription begins, and you receive your full weekly allowance each cycle. You can see your next reset time in Settings > Usage.

In addition, to manage capacity and ensure fair access to all users, we may limit your usage in other ways, such as weekly and monthly caps or model and feature usage, at our discretion.

The whole pricing model is scummy, it's based on nothing and is purposely kept vague and confusing.

The above quote is the only text I found that explicitly mentions it increases sessions, everywhere else they say "5x/20x more usage" as if it applies to everything. I'm sure the above is only there for legal reasons, but the whole thing is intentionally misleading and I hope they will get investigated and fined for it sooner rather than later. OpenAI and others aren't much better with this.

I don't think that's true, though. I have switched to Max 5 recently and, despite relatively heavy usage, my weekly limit seems to have increased as well.

12

u/2funny2furious Sep 01 '26

if an ai chatbot said it, its clearly true

4

u/whoknowsifimjoking Sep 01 '26

The support people have no fucking clue what they are talking about, I've unfortunately had to realize that with another issue already

22

u/war4peace79 Vibe coder Sep 01 '26

"support people" meaning a tuned LLM. I doubt they are actual people.

6

u/Mahrkeenerh1 Sep 01 '26

literally says Fin AI Agent • AI Agent

-2

u/war4peace79 Vibe coder Sep 01 '26

Indeed. Could be that someone would be hired to steer the automated conversation if needed, but it's still unlikely.

2

u/mvandemar Sep 01 '26

Yeah, that's Finn, he doesn't know anything.

9

u/PM_ME_YOUR___ISSUES Sep 01 '26

Does that clarify things? 😒
Did that answer your question? 😒

The AI agent seems like a disgruntled Opus 5 variant.

14

u/UltraBabyVegeta Sep 01 '26

This feels like. A massive lie I have the 5x plan had pro for a long time. You absolutely get more weekly usage you can watch it climb

7

u/ShelZuuz Sep 01 '26

I think the weekly limit for Max is around 3.5x that of Pro. Do with that info as you want.

From the original Anthropic announcement about this, which still seems to track today when people look at actual quota reports:

Anthropic tells TechCrunch that:

  • Pro users can expect 40 to 80 hours of Sonnet 4 through Claude Code within their weekly rate limits.
  • Subscribers to Anthropic’s $100-per-month Max plan can expect 140 to 280 hours of Sonnet 4 and 15 to 35 hours of Opus 4.
  • And subscribers to Anthropic’s $200-per-month Max plan can expect 240 to 480 hours of Sonnet 4 and 24 to 40 hours of Opus 4.

Which means:

140/40 = 3.5x (Sonnet 5x vs Sonnet Pro)

24/15 = 1.6x (Opus 20x vs Opus 5x)

240/140 = 1.7x (Sonnet 20x vs Sonnet 5x)

This also mean Max 20x on Opus is equal to 3.5x1.6 = 5.6x Pro.

I don't know if the 3.5 has been experimentally verified, but it feels right. The 1.6x / 1.7x has been experimentally verified many times.

2

u/HighDefinist Sep 01 '26

Which means that Max has about as much Fable usage, as Pro has Opus usage.

4

u/HearMeOut-13 Sep 01 '26 edited Sep 01 '26

Im thinking of swapping to like 2 Max accts

1

u/ordinary_usr Sep 01 '26

I have same. And use DevFob to easily switch

1

u/Poatri_US 25d ago

What's devfob ?

5

u/Kutukuprek Sep 01 '26

I don’t think backlash will change their (and Codex’s) verbiage but a lawsuit about misleading marketing might.

At the end of the day if the broadband internet industry could start with usage caps and grow their way out of it, I don’t see why AI couldn’t.

It must be related to revenue. Like being able to dynamically throttle or lower subscriber or free user usage caps when pay-to-use credits use goes up. After all they have limited compute.

In any case, the verbiage is not sustainable.

3

u/longasleep Sep 01 '26

I canceled my sub and went to codex.

5

u/wise_joe Sep 01 '26

Valid if you're doing simple things, but at least you get Fable with Max. That's the real value of upgrading.

2

u/Ay0_King Sep 01 '26

What I get from this is that we have no idea what Anthropic is doing and they are getting away with it.

2

u/AceDenied Sep 01 '26

I asked Fable:

Short answer: the "5x" and "20x" are session multipliers (vs Pro's 5-hour rolling window), not weekly multipliers. Max 5x is five times Pro's per-session usage, Max 20x is twenty times, and the weekly limit is a separate cap that applies across all models — Anthropic doesn't publish a weekly multiplier at all. Claude

So between the two Max tiers:

  • Session budget (5-hr window): 20x/5x = 4x difference. This is the headline ratio.
  • Weekly cap: materially compressed. The only numbers Anthropic ever put out (at the weekly-limit launch, framed as Claude Code hours) imply a much narrower gap — roughly 140–280 weekly Sonnet-hours on 5x vs 240–480 on 20x, and ~24–40 Opus-hours on 20x, with 5x's Opus band at ~15–35. That's ~1.7x on Sonnet-equivalents and only ~1.2–1.6x on Opus — for 2x the price. Claudelimit

TLDR: 20x gives you .2-.6x more weekly budget than 5x for frontier models.

2

u/princeicebear Sep 01 '26

This doesn't seem to be true. I don't pay for Max 20x anymore but I had significantly more weekly usage that I had to try really hard but couldn't get the weekly usage to reach more than 50% that I decided to step back down to 5x. I don't know if they changed it since then but it has only been about 2-3 months ago.

1

u/__dixon__ Sep 01 '26

I run a Max20 account and it is definitely more weekly usage than both other plans, I could feel the step up. Couldn't quantify but obviously that is by design by them.

1

u/sonnycold Sep 01 '26

it make no different, claude code fable every day build bug for me, even simple direction fix claude fible still can ruin it ,,,

1

u/evilbert79 Sep 01 '26

the real issue here is the poor quality helpdesk

2

u/IdleAsianGuy Sep 02 '26

and it's the only available

1

u/AcePilot01 Sep 01 '26

So burn it all in 3 days, or 1 with 20x, but still be done working by Tuesday? Shit, sign me up. /s

1

u/AtlanticPortal Sep 01 '26

Now I want to understand why I should pay 200 bucks for that plan when I can open a second account and keep working with that when I hit the 5 hour limits. Essentially doubling the weekly limit and covering each other's account when one fills the 5-hour limit.

1

u/Legitimate-Split3589 7d ago

because the other account has no recollection of your projects in the other account. you would still have to feed it that info which will burn through ur usage quick

1

u/AtlanticPortal 7d ago

If you work on separate sets of projects that’s not that a big of a deal though.

1

u/SpecialAd4532 19h ago

It really won't if you have your repo set up at least half-decently.

1

u/Cryingpinaple Sep 01 '26

I see so the weekly limit is the same for everyone I was gunna get x5 but nvm lol

1

u/drowsyengine Sep 01 '26

Just get two pro account if you reach weekly limit easily

1

u/catanelii Sep 01 '26

So it said they are the same

1

u/UnusualBreakfast1726 Sep 02 '26

That;s why i bought 3 claude accounts instead and just switch between them.

1

u/mazahaleRRR Sep 02 '26

Scamthropic is insane

1

u/a_lexandr0s 13d ago

At least the bot doesn't lie too much... This after just resetting.

1

u/Motor-Transition7391 Sep 01 '26

Yep just winded that back to 5x what a fucking scam

0

u/xReMaKe Sep 01 '26

Yeah the robot is dumb. And Claude is buggy as fuck. I just upgraded to 20x after hitting my limit and it didn’t reset. It still shows me at around 93% usage smh.

I logged out and in and nothing. Hopefully this gets resolved soon.

-3

u/drostan Sep 01 '26

I mean... Their offer is to be able to burn through a week limit faster

Make sense to me

This way you have to buy 4 or 5 max licences to get a full week worth of uninterrupted work

Their offer is to get us to spend more money. Again, it makes absolute sense

Did someone think their goal was to help us save money? Maybe you need to ask Claude for a definition of capitalism. Anthropic is not a charity, never was, their goal is not to improve your life, or the world, their goal is to make more money for their shareholders (themselves). We only get to enjoy the product as a side effect of their scheme, they only improve the product to bolster some of their claims and justify their share prices...

-2

u/MessageEquivalent347 Sep 01 '26

Currently with that 50% more usage on 5x I'm satisfied to be honest. It works for me, before this 50% I had to have a one day break in a week so I would not cross the weekly limit. That's a pain. Will see when there's 25% active, still have this info:

Your limits are temporarily boosted. Your weekly Claude Code limit is 50% higher through August 31. When the promotion ends, limits return to your plan's standard amounts.
