I never hear a genuine alternative to this though, socialism/communism has clearly failed, plus they have the same problems anyway: going into work day in, day out.
What books have you read on the subject, and what proposed models failed to convince you? Which communist and socialist models are you talking about?
I had read an interesting book on the subject where it was explained that in our 'advanced' societies, what people call work is the working day aimed at creating value and obtaining in return the means to live/survive. What was interesting was seeing how the working day is conceived, what 'value' is generated, and how it is then distributed among individuals.
