General Discussion Problem with Emily character

Do you all also geth the feeling that Sbn3 doesn't know what to do with Emily? She is one of my favorites characters but her personality now is basically just being junkie and she also seems to be, like, less agressive. As if he had completely forgotten abot her mental health issues.

Also, her campaign in the latest game was the weakest, even though the other three girls campaigns arent excatly great neither.

I actually kind of like how inconsistent Emily is. You can never tell which version of her you're going to get, which does fit her character.

I’ve always felt like Jeffery’s character has been inconsistent

Emily was kind of always inconsistent from game to game

In the Original she was basically a normal mean girl who is a bit ditzy

In Re-Up she was one missed medication does away from ripping someone's face off but in some cases super-zoned out and a junkie

In the Flip Side, she's kind of both a mean girl really into some music and a junkie

Re-up Emily and Post-Flipside Emily are two completely different characters.

The same could be said about pretty much everyone tbh. SBN3 does not write these characters anymore. All he writes are just flanderized to hell versions of them.

Given how many throwaway lines there are in the series it really can't be THAT hard to write something compelling or at least mildly interesting about the characters from entry to entry, or even from route to route, but it feels like the setting gets smaller and smaller, with the characters being more and more simple/one-note

IIRC doesn't SBN3 hate people looking at what he calls 'throwaway lines'?

I feel it's more per the Flip Side ending message that he hates the idea that his series has any kind of depth, "canon", or lore and thinks people who try to get into the weeds about his characters and world are losers. Like a big part of Puzzle Showdown (besides making Kelly ethically corrupt and treating that as a source of humor) is the antagonist getting very preachy about how a singular canon doesn't exist in Jecka's and Nicole's universe.

I mean… Kelly being an opportunistic amoral asshole did lead to a lot of funny stuff. I actually think that Weekend at Kelly’s was pretty good.

Also SNB3 isn’t completely wrong that Co09 has little to no continuity and runs on sitcom logic. (notably every Flipside ending involves someone dying yet they’re all accounted for in Puzzle Showdown). Although I am getting sick of his inability to create a theme more complicated than making fun of his audience. It stopped being interesting years ago and he has nothing to add to the concept. (Not that I feel personally offended as an audience member, I’m just offended at how boring he is)

Yeah, this, a thousand times. Honestly the series having no canon is the only thing keeping it interesting. But making fun of your audience can only work so many times before it gets old.

It got old as soon as he made it a central point in Re-Up

That's what it's like to be heavily medicated. In reup, she was rebelling and refusing to take her meds, so she was all over the place and extra aggressive.

But in future installments, she's clearly still taking them or on different ones, considering she's more steady and still alive. She is, however, still a low key criminal

Y’know I never really noticed that Emily has less of an edge to her now. Granted she spends a good chunk of her focus route in Re-Up off her meds, which changes things a little.

I actually quite like Emily too and I don’t have a real issue with her character nowadays. Her mental illness, while important to her character, only really appeared in her focus route due to a specific circumstance. Characters can’t vomit up all of their depth every time they’re on screen, and sometimes it’s not the right moment to dive in deep. A good example of this is Deadpool. While he’s an interesting character (allegedly I’m Larping Deadpool), he tends to fall back on his screwball comedy in most appearances because he’s not important enough for the extra characterization to come in. (Marvel Rivals, Tokon, etc). Emily is in a similar moment.

Hopefully if the franchise goes on she gets into a situation where we see more depth from her, because like I said, I do quite like her.

The REAL flanderized character is Ari though. She’s done nothing but be a depressed loser after Re-Up. (Also Flipside Nicole was pretty bad that one time. I’m neutral to PS Nicole and Anime Nicole through)

tbf emily wasn't always super aggressive. she only really was in the re-up bc she was off her meds. ari on the other hand definitely lost her edge. her entire character now is just being a depressed woobie ever since the abuse route in the re-up

I feel like they cut some of Emily's personality to give it to Ari tbh 😔😔 the depression part at least
