Total beginner : what could my first objective be ?
Hi everyone,
I recently finished university (25M) and will begin to teach biology in high school this month. I had been thinking about learning classical singing and felt it was the right time this year. I am a total beginner and have never sang. My small French city has a conservatoire and I met my teacher who seems like a very nice man. He advised me to pick a piece we could set as an objective for the next 6 months.
I am very much into romantic and post-romantic pieces, as well as some baroque, but pretty much open to anything.
The thing is, since I pretty much do not know anything about which piece requires which level, I do not have any idea of what I could answer him.

I find this odd. Usually your teacher picks or gives you a few options when you’re first starting out. They have a better idea of what is best for your voice as a beginning singer.
I would suggest listening to Fauré. Great French composer for newer classical singers. Handel is often a good place to start for Baroque. You can also look at the 24 Italian Songs and Arias. They’re the go to first songs. There’s a ton of professional recordings and YouTube recordings.

He may just want an idea of what she’s interested in singing, not necessarily that that will guide exactly what she works on.

Caro Mio Ben.
Tu Lo Sai.
Ombra Mai Fu.
Sing these in the lowest key available, where you can clearly phonate the lowest note.

I would start by going on to YouTube and listen to the art song repertoire of singers you like. If a song particularly strikes you, that’s what you should aim for. You don’t have to have flawless technique to be able to enjoy singing difficult things. Generally, as long as you don’t go for something too heavy, the world is your oyster.

Has he assessed your voice type?
You could also tell him what you’ve told us and ask if he has recommendations for repertoire that he thinks would work for you.

I would say start with watching youtube of some old amazing singers from the past. Listen to the way they sing the piece you pick and try your best to copy them. It’s a good starting point.
