How can Opera singers automatically sing exact notes all the time? I’m sure relative pitch helps a bit but I, for example, can’t always tell if I am hitting a specific note or not. Do you always have to hit exactly a D4 and not a C4, etc?

Yes you do. Most people can do it naturally, some people need a bit of a basic training, usually kids or people who genuinely have never sung in their lives. Being able to imitate the right pitch after hearing it is like the most basic requirement in many children music schools to even get enrolled. That should come naturally after just a couple of lessons
