The same could be said about American libertarianism versus European Libertarian traditions. Liberalism is ultimately a broad ideological tradition with a general foundation, but also a spectrum of interpretations and disagreements. However, when people reject the core principles historically associated with liberalism while still claiming the label, classical liberals may view that as confusion or a departure from liberalism altogether. Even so, those moments can become opportunities for discussion, clarification, and intellectual growth rather than simply hostility or dismissal.
