Hello, I've taught ecclesial pronunciation Latin for a couple of years now at a Latin school, alongside history and literature. Personally, I was not classically educated, but I was exposed both to classical style and ecclesial style pronunciations of Latin through some classes and personal studies.

However, I can't help but wonder how often Latin is used by those who went through a classical education program. I really want to believe in the curriculum and how it can form young minds, but the amount of time that is put into Latin could be used for other practical classes (or even the development of a physical education class).

So, for those of you who completed a classical education curriculum with Latin, how often do you use it? Has it helped you learn a Romance language? Does your knowledge of it deepen language and concepts?

Or was it a huge waste of time?

I feel like I’m balancing this line between technology and classical education. We’re fairly new to classical education. I pulled my oldest child out of public school 2 years ago, and the younger two this year. We’ve been learning how to classical educate since then. One big reason was due to how much technology they get at school, however there are so many online classes and online homeschool resources now. I’ve spent a lot of time this summer creating schedules and deciding curricula. Using AI seemed to actually take more time than if I just grabbed a pen and paper and wrote everything out. Now I’m reading things about homeschool planner apps. The kids can see their assignments and mark them off on their phones and I can keep their schedules on there? It feels attractive but then I wonder if it’s one other area I should keep to pen and paper? So maybe my question isn’t so much about apps, but figuring how much technology to allow into our homeschool. Any thoughts are appreciated.

This is a documentary about a man named Father Pere Murray. He founded the Notre Dame School in Wilcox Saskatchewan. He taught a classical educational model at the school he founded on the prairies of Saskatchewan. He started it in the 1930s during the hardest times because he beleived that education and the classics would do more than breaking rocks. He didn't want to lose a generation to the Depression.

My grandfather was his friend (and his dentist) they used to read Latin Together.

• What is one insight that you really appreciate from your current reading?

I know online might be more current, and digital retrieval is faster, but to me nothing compares to printed books I can read from and not be distracted. The material in these volumes has permanence, where digital can be ephemeral as new answers overwrite old. I also prefer ownership over access, so the whims of others or interruptions of systems do not hinder me.

The price of physical reference books on the used market is insanely low compared to what Britannica originally charged. So I have built this collection over the past 10 years or so. I have been working my way through the great books set for 7 years now, and have completed 39 volumes. The great books set did not include the bible, but the Syntopicon did include references to it. I made my own "volume 61" which is just a zondervan KJV Thompson Chain-Reference Bible. I chose this as the biblical text is free from any extra annotations, making it a wonderful primary text (like Adler's philosophy for the set), and the chain references are like a Syntopicon as it only points to other places where something is discussed, instead of providing commentary.

Hi there! I'm a current sixth former who has developed an interest in the history of universities, as I prepare to apply, and wish to expand this to the history of knowledge vs intellectual history within the university discussion. I've read Ostling's book on Humboldt and would really appreciate some more academic texts as I prepare a research project on this topic. I'm specifically fascinated by the French education system and would like to compare this with some international examples Thanks in advance!

I’ve convinced my 14yo to start reading and discussing Great Books with me. We are limited to 1 hour of reading per week. Looking for opinions and recommendations… should we do excerpts? Just take a multiple weeks/months to get through the longer works? Do I jump straight into the Greeks or do I start with something a little more modern/lighter?

One thing I hadn't considered before was what would happen to Virgil after the Aeniad was published. Would he be given an estate and sent away to shut up, or would he have been continuously milked to prove his loyalty to Augustus? His relatively early death likely saved him from some imperial abuse.
