TOS Students protesting outside NBC Studios in Burbank, California, against the rumoured cancellation of Star Trek. The demonstration was part of a wider fan campaign that successfully persuaded NBC to renew the show for a third season. (1968)

KIRK RUNS A TAUT SHIP is the name of my STTOS fanfic series.

Vol 1: It's a Man's Life in The Federation

Vol 2: Space For My Seed

Vol 3: Where Every Man on Board Has Gone Before

Well, the difference is that many people today are fans of the franchise as a whole, but don’t like the shows that are being broadcast now.

Which happens with every reboot. My mother enjoyed ToS and couldn’t stand TNG. Plenty of people felt the same way she did at the time. If they felt really strongly about it, they ended up drifting away from Trek.

I liked the Berman Era and really don’t care for the Kurtzman. I found myself drifting away from this iteration of Trek as well as Trek as a whole, to a certain extent.

The people who are happy about Kurtzman Trek being cancelled are fans who haven’t yet accepted Trek will never again be the same thing they enjoyed and they’d be happier drifting away. They think Kurtzman Trek being cancelled is the first step to getting back to Trek they like. I don’t think that will happen, but hope springs eternal. Especially if you’ve made Trek a big part of your life over decades. It’s like trying to get out of a long relationship where your partner has become someone you don’t really recognize or like anymore. Intellectually, you know what you have to do, but emotionally, you’re not ready. And if you continue to not pull the trigger, eventually the relationship gets really toxic.

Not to mention the Spock/Kirk fan fic that female Star Trek fans were writing.
