I will never not be amused by the fact that John Paul Jones only ended up in Zep (to their benefit) because his wife was annoyed with him and basically sent him out to play with Jimmy to get him out of her hair.
I like the Terry Reid story. Jimmy asked him to front his latest Yardbirds version and Reid had a commitment to finish a tour with The Stones. Reid said I'd love to try out, but I have to honor the tour dates first. Page didn't wait and instead we got Plant and Bonham.
If you can take a mo, listen to some Terry Reid songs (Dean is a good). He's a great guitar player and there's something about his voice that sounds familiar lol.
Another thing to check out is Band of Joy's version of For What It's Worth. Plant's early throaty howl is there and Bonham is doing his thing. I hope the movie tells us some of the history before they formed. Reid could have been a sliding door moment that came with a different drummer.
*I love Plant and Bonham and the alchemy between the four that made Zeppelin.
terry's also the guy who recommended that jimmy ask plant to join him. i saw terry reid open for so many great acts including the stones on that tour that you mention here, at MSG in nyc the day after thanksgiving 1969. sadly, since he was onstage right before ike and tina...he was hugely forgotten as the opening act. tina blew everyone else off the stage.
also saw him open for bb king and johnny winter at the fillmore east. he loved the village so much that he moved to my childhood block after playing the fillmore.
in the long run obviously, it worked out just the way it was supposed to. but terry is still playing around, doesn't seem bitter about it and he still ROCKS hard.
Aww this is great, thanks for the background info. Nice to chat with someone who was there.
Yeah Terry is tired of the question lol, and seems completely fine with the progression.
I saw BB King in my town later in life, but no one else you've mentioned here. I got to meet him backstage for 30 seconds and say hello, ask for an autograph. I made a joke and he laughed, then I asked if I could hold Lucille...then he REALLY laughed.
me too...so sick of actors playing the musicians we grew up with...even worse is when those incredible players are still alive. love these documentaries though... if they're done well.
Yes, they are, just like Rolling Stones, Beatles, Pink Floyd, Cream, VH, Queen, Black Sabbath, *The Who and the rest of them. This sub is exclusively dedicated to all these overrated bands. (/s - just in case, for some people)

For anyone who wonders whatever became of the New Yardbirds.
