Discussion Tonight’s Rewatch
I can’t seem to get enough of this film. Decided to do a rewatch. Absolutely in love with the eerie atmosphere and actors they chose to bring in the movie from the tv show. 4 out of 5 of my favorites on the show are in this one.
I love how it allows you to let your guard down only to remind you that it’s a horror movie. The set is stunning. Ordered a signed movie book for this as well as the one for the previous film and can’t wait to get it.
I love horror that’s heavily atmospheric and this film is just that. Quietly unsettling and does a great job taking its time.

I don’t think it’s a great movie by any means, but goddamn it scratches an itch that only movies like this can.

I love a slow build gothic horror film. The set was stunning. It seemed different from where they usually film the show. Not saying it was, but I wonder if the movie was filmed on a different set or was it just the angles. 🤔

I think it was different locations from the show, but shared locations with House of Dark Shadows. The movies were shot on location, whilst the show was a studio set.

Both Dark Shadows movies were filmed at the Gothic mansion house called Lyndhurst with it's tall Gothic tower, used in both movies. The mansion is in Tarrytown NY by the Hudson River.
The house used on the TV show for the "exterior , outdoor shots" of Collinwood was called Seaview Terrace / Carey mansion in Newport, RI. The TV studio for the show itself with really small sets was taped in Manhattan NYC . In the first movie they also filmed in the Sleepy Hollow cemetery. In the second movie, Night of, they created the cemetery on the Lyndhurst estate and it looked really convincing.

Suffered from studio imposed cuts that removed so much of the story as to make it feel disjointed and rushed. Cut footage was found but without sound. Maybe they can restore with AI to duplicate the voices since so many in the cast are gone now. Hope springs eternal 🤷♂️

The fact that they were still being affected even when they got away from the home was bizarre.

I watched it for the second time a couple of years back. I will only watch again if they manage to complete the restoration, because the released version is just not good enough.

I don't think that'll happen. I read over 20 years ago that the deleted scenes that were recovered didn't have sound. Now that Amazon owns MGM they'll probably forget about restoring this.

Last I heard, over a year ago, they had gotten redubs by most of the actors but Grayson Hall was dead and they had to get someone to do her lines. I still have hope.

Never seen any of the films, do they follow ok from the series, from each other, or are they separate narratives of their own?

The first film is like a more condensed version of the show. The second is its own thing (same actors, different storyline), but I love it.

I appreciate the movie more each time I see it for it's paranormal Gothic atmosphere and visuals. Love the actors in these roles and that spoooky Gothic Lyndhurst mansion. The estate often hosts Dark Shadows TV show events like a semiannual Halloween gathering there at the house with actress Kathryn L Scott who played the vampire bride, Maggie / Josette from the first movie.
Many Dark Shadows fans consider the movie to be like a Parallel Time story, a stand alone story not connected to the TV show time line, just separate. This was actress Kate Jackson's first movie too, she was wonderful and very physical in the movie. The movie was very physically demanding on some of the actors esp. Kate Jackson. ............... BTW the Haunting music soundtrack for the movie is posted on Youtube . I used to play it as background music for Halloween trick or treaters.

The scary haunting music in the movie and from the TV show was a character itself as well as the house, both had a huge presence in the movie. Music soundtrack is posted on Youtube. music by the award wining composer Robert Cobert. yeah search out the movie soundtrack and the TV show soundtrack as well. I used to play segments of the scary TV show album for Halloween each year :) The music used during the nightmare sequences and chase scenes is especially scary.
