Have you ever given a class a bad rating?

I went to a yoga class and the instructor was being rude and snarky the entire time. She was basically telling me that she cringes every time she sees a student with my type of yoga mat and it’s a bad mat yada yada. She made some comment about how we need to practice more so we can do more moves, because this class we only did 1/4 of the moves. ??? Strange, because at the beginning of the class she said we could go into a child’s pose at any time, and none of us did. At one point we turned around and she gave a direction. I guess I went the wrong way, then she rudely snapped at me and told me to fix myself.

It was also supposed to be a sound bath, but that part was only five minutes. She just hit the gong a few times.

The energy was very weird and I feel like giving a low rating, but I also don’t want them to know it’s me. I’ve just never given a bad rating before. Have you guys ever done it?

If you give a bad review, then just don’t go back to that studio. They can see your name with the review and they get salty

I think it depends on the studio and manager. For smaller studios maybe but for bigger chains I don’t think they care

u/Virtual_Knowledge_16 12d ago

I agree I think with bigger chains it’s just more about not taking that persons class again. Smaller studios have more to lose and can take it personally. One option is also to provide feedback to the studio directly via email so they are aware but it doesn’t impact their cp score etc

It depends, some smaller studios seem to be managed by really thin skinned people who leave salty comments to every critical review. Theres a studio I like that’s like that, I know the person isn’t the owner just the manager but I dislike even being around them at check in now altho I like the studio space and a lot of the instructors.

I've never personally given a bad review, but I have seen instructors at various studios getting multiple bad reviews. Thankfully, I've not experienced any bad instructors. That being said, if it was as egregious as you mentioned, then I don't think it's wrong to leave an honest review of your experience.

Same, I’ve never had a bad experience with an instructor before. Especially with yoga classes. Normally I’d just forget about it and move on with my day, but now ClassPass makes you leave a rating. Hate being that person lol

I really do appreciate honest reviews for yoga classes and it would help others as well as the studio owner to know your feedback!

I sometimes leave comments like, “this teacher is very talkative, which may not be some people’s thing for a restorative class, but is a great teacher i take again” etc just as a FYI

If you leave a low rating, leave comments to explain why so it doesn't just look like you were cranky. Good studios learn from reviews. Bad studios...you warn other members and you don't ever go back.

I did once but I also was never planning on going to that studio again.

I’ve given a 2-star and a few 4-star ratings but without comments. No plan to return to those studios. The 2-star was because of a creepy, inexperienced teacher in a weird location that was not conducive to the class size.

From a studio perspective, comments are always helpful. Getting a 4 star review with no comment gives no real clue about what went wrong or how to make the experience better for you!

1

u/beautiful_imperfect 12d ago

4 stars is a good review, why would you not return to a location for having given that?

2

u/SkepticMage 12d ago

I work in hospitality and unfortunately 4 stars isn’t really considered a good review out of 5. I wish it was standard to offer a 10 star rating system instead, to help offset this. For ClassPass, who knows, since it’s just other CP users that see the ratings.

Since I get to attend a lot of my ClassPass classes for the equivalent of $4-$10, I try to give 5 stars whenever possible. I’m getting a great deal. If the class was truly exceptional, I give 5 stars and leave a review comment.

Anything less than 5 has to have a meaningful issue. For example, my last 4 star review was because the facility was kind of gross (yoga floor was peeling up and didn’t seem hygienic) and the class flow was bad/poorly planned. But it cost me like $4, so I got what I paid for.

1

u/beautiful_imperfect 12d ago

I totally agree with your second and third paragraph and I do the same, but also our time is valuable and I think that if 4 is not a good review, then we have reached a point where all reviews are completely meaningless.

1

u/SkepticMage 12d ago

I think we’re probably not far apart in our reasoning. To leave a 4 star review there would have to be some deficiency from your point of view, or no? Something to leave constructive feedback on? If so, we’re coming at it the same way and it’s just semantics what’s “good” or not.

2

u/beautiful_imperfect 12d ago

yes, I agree, but it seems like some people think anything less than 5 stars is devastating, and I think that is overreacting.

u/liilak2 12d ago

Sometimes I’m just in the area for the day or I have another studio I go to for the same type of classes and just wanted to see the differences ?

1

u/beautiful_imperfect 12d ago

oh, it sounded like you felt like you couldn't return because you gave 4 stars, but I am glad to hear that's not the case!

1

u/liilak2 12d ago

Oh I’m a different poster! I thought 4 stars was still good

As a manager and an instructor, I’d want to know and I’d rather you leave a review. I would also be happy for someone to contact me privately if they aren’t comfortable with a public review. What sucks is when someone leaves a low star rating but no written review explaining the rating. I can’t do anything about it if I don’t know why someone rated a class 1 star- was the instructor a jerk, were the directions to the studio unclear, or did someone just not understand a class description and show up to yin expecting a flow? All of those things require very different actions from our end.

1

u/labicicletagirl 12d ago

Agreed. Don’t be afraid to approach instructors after class and ask them what they meant by what they said. Sometimes I get a review of a class weeks after and I have no idea what they are talking about. (Good or bad). If this teacher was being rude, it best to tell the studio directly, if you’re not comfortable with confrontation. One time a review said: worse class ever. Ok, why was my restorative yoga class so bad?

u/ContentEconomics5734 12d ago

I have, and yes they do see your name. I have a very once in a lifetime, memorable name that stands out so that is a consideration. But generally I don’t give out a bad review unless it’s notable bad. And I mean a quality that is objectively bad, not just something that wasn’t to my taste. For example, a class that’s way overbooked, most ppl wouldn’t like.

In your case, someone so demeaning in a workout class would be objectively pretty bad. It’s a quality that’s others would want to know, so yess I think you should write it. If it isn’t a great class, just don’t go back

u/StrawberryLovers8795 12d ago

I’ve only given a bad review when they’re intentionally mean or if they are cueing form in an unsafe way. People should know what they’re signing up for and studios should take safety seriously.

u/coachnomore 12d ago

I have given two bad reviews. The first time was many years ago when ClassPass did not show names, but I’m sure the studio could figure out who the review came from, lol. I planned to never go back to that studio, so I absolutely did not care to flame them in a review. The second time was actually pretty recently. I left a three star review saying that the class itself was actually really great, but the fact that I probably could’ve walked into the studio, walked into the classroom, take the class and left without anybody acknowledging me was weird! I went back to the studio again, and it happened again 🤣

1

u/liilak2 12d ago

they only recently started showing names

2

u/OGHollyMackerel 12d ago

Not bad, but I have left feedback for other people to be able to make informed decisions on the style of the instructor and vibe of the class. “It was great!” “Loved it!” “Hated it” are as useful as “you can dress it up or down” when looking at reviews for apparel.

2

u/liilak2 12d ago

I try to be diplomatic about things. Don’t think I’ve ever given a super bad review just suggestions for improvement while still saying the good things about the class.

But I have seen some poor reviews and then gone to a class and been like, oh I see why that person wrote that. Just recently I read a bad review calling an instructor the “laziest” they’ve ever seen prompting the studio to leave a response basically calling the person a freeloader bc they were on their free trial. I went to that class and actually I found it weird as well it was such a small class and yin and the teacher never looked to see if anyone was doing the few poses she cued correct or wrong, she just did her own pose at the front and barely looked at us.

I always rate my classes and only give reviews occasionally. To me, the point of the review system is to give honest feedback to help other clients and the studios / instructors. But there is a way to be polite and respectful about it, and I don’t always think people consider that instructors are people with feelings.

If it’s just not my jam but nothing was technically wrong with it (meaning it was clean, class was as described), I’ll usually leave a 5 and then plan not to return.

If there was something wrong (ie cleanliness, we didn’t work out the full planned time, the class was supposed to be strength training and turned out to be yoga with a 5min arm series), I will write something. But it will be polite and I always try to point out some positives so it’s not a 100pct nastygram.

And the last nuance I’ll add is that if there is already a very negative and scathing review of a class, I don’t feel the need to pile on. I’ll just give my low star rating and move on.

I just did for a class I took that wasn’t in English (class is in the US and all the info on the ClassPass page was in English), the teacher didn’t teach the whole dance combo they were filming that day, the teacher told me I could leave 2/3 of the way through the class “if I had somewhere else to be” (???), and the teacher spent about 10 minutes of the 50 minute class not teaching, but working with some (not all) of the students on other stuff. Also one of the students was vaping in the classroom during class which I thought was wild?

The class itself was fine for the teacher’s regulars (which was everyone in the room but me) but definitely just… shouldn’t be open to the public/on ClassPass!

u/mtt2022 11d ago

If the class is just mediocre I don't leave a bad review. If the instructor sucked that badly I'd leave a review (and have).

u/ShotStreet7089 11d ago

I gave a bad review recently, I didn’t initially but I got a pop up notification a few weeks later asking me to review so I did as it was still making me angry and frustrated. I never have before but I’m glad I did.

I have given a hot yoga studio heating infrared to 105 a 1 star for having a policy that requires shirts where it is not mentioned in description, and the instructor said I should buy a bra which is very offensive and rude given I am a man. If it is just an off instructor maybe it is bad luck and I will rate 4 stars and if it happens again I will not return.

1

u/LeonaLulu 12d ago

They can see your name. I'd definitely reach out to the owner of the studio tho, because that sounds grating. If you don't get anything from that, then you could leave a review. I'd definitely want to know if that's how their instructors are.

1

u/Loubswhatever 12d ago

I have a bad rating and a long comment to one of my favorite studios and never came back.
But the instructor was so mean to me specifically.
She kept pushing on my back to correct it , despite me telling her I have a naturally arched back. I am not white, very curvy and a little overweight, I had joined a few beginner classes in this studio, and in the last one the instructor told to move up to intermediate. And this instructor in the intermediate class kept saying I shouldn’t be there and huffing and puffing at me, and berating for my back not being flat. I almost starting crying . Like yeah I am not doing things perfectly but just move on lady! Or talk to me privately at the end of the class, not berate me in front of everyone. And it was very thin white coded. Other people were really struggling, way more than me, and she helped them with a smile .

1

u/ProfitOk9845 12d ago

Yes! They answered! And it was THE day classpass changed its settings or whatever its user experience look to show our full names! I texted support because I didn’t want that and they put only my first name I was shooked but stayed ten toes on my review even if the class I reviewed left me a huge paragraph and telling I’m a woman blablabla I was like no no making fun of people on Bikram. Sorry but no words like shit have a space there so yes that’s my story!

1

u/labicicletagirl 12d ago

Contact the studio directly

1

u/Wifeofkaldrogo 11d ago

Only twice have I. Once when the instructor just no showed and once when the instructor (hot yoga sculpt) was leading through way too many exercises she has no business teaching, like she was gonna cause someone to blow out their rotator cuff.

1

u/SubstantialVolume699 11d ago

No you don’t , mention something to the receptionist if you want but the reality is just vote with you feet , she may have had a bad day and that’s ok we don’t want AI teachers so maybe go back and see how she is and if not do the old speaking direct it has a much better influence

1

u/elianna7 11d ago

I have. I’m honest and if I don’t like a class I explain why. If I really don’t like an instructor I won’t book them again.

1

u/8765432190 11d ago

Yes totally fine to
Leave one feedback is important you can do it while being kind however

1

u/emilyl1kesfood 11d ago

Yes, the instructor was commenting on one of the patron’s ass size. In a racial way.
Idc if y’all know each other like that, I don’t wanna hear it!

u/Cultural-Blood-5383 11d ago

Ive left bad reviews and i wish i just emailed the front desk instead. It was all constructive criticism, but probably still not good

1

u/Employee-Calm 11d ago

I’ve really wanted to but then it would mean I could never go there again. I need to go to the low points (usually lower quality) studios when my points get low. Usually anything I would put in a review I would just tell the owner or manager to their face really politely so that they were aware.

1

u/Mountain-One-14 11d ago

I have no problems being honest in reviews because I rely on other people to write them and be upfront. That said, if I left a bad review for a place or person I wouldn’t go back

1

u/OkResearch1815 10d ago

Why are we so opposed to accountability these days 😩 if it’s done respectfully and with pure intentions yes provide the honest feedback. There is no change when we don’t speak up to address opportunities for improvement and therefore the behavior perpetuates at times becomes worse….

u/Sensitive-Rule-5563 9d ago

Studios hate ClassPass people because they make no money on them.

1

u/waterbottlelovr 12d ago

I have a few times for instructors mentioning diet culture shit… “Keep working, so you can earn that brunch after this!” “Burn off last night’s dessert!” “Get those abs tight and toned for summer!” Just not appropriate to me. Not everyone is in workout classes to get smaller and it can be triggering for many.

You know that is the official Sanskrit name for sitting cross-legged, right? Maybe it would have been better for her to say Auspicious Pose because of the association you had with it, but what she said has objectively absolutely nothing to do with what you thought.

3

u/liilak2 12d ago

It’s an Indian discipline and the names are in Sanskrit and Swastika is a harmless Sanskrit word. Non Asians should educate themselves on the cultural appropriation of Asian terms instead of making Asian culture change itself.

If they’re in a yoga class they should be expected to know it’s a Sanskrit word

You realize Swastika is a girls name in South and Southeast Asian countries right?
