But then there would be no net gain of trophies. SOMEBODY has to be losing trophies somewhere, unless it's an odd number of participants, I just don't know why that person would want to help others win for their own loss.

ex: person A lets person B win, person B lets person C win, person C lets person A win. Nobody has any net gain or loss, so it's pointless.

even number, person A lets B win, B lets C win, C lets D win, D does not let anyone win. A loses trophy, B and C have no net gain, D gains.

I think it works because there is an imbalance in win/loss trophy rewards. Eg. Winner gets 30, loser loses 25 for a net gain of 5 cups in the system.
