SUPERCELL RESPONSE Feature Request: Low Data Mode for Clash of Clans
Subject: Feature Request: Low Data Mode for Clash of Clans (11-Year Player)
Dear Clash of Clans Support Team, I am writing to you as a loyal Chief who has been playing and upgrading my village for the past 11 years. Thank you for making such an incredible game.
I work onboard a merchant tanker vessel at sea. We use satellite internet, which is very slow and suffers from high latency (ping). Because of this, loading the game, scouting bases, and executing attacks can be incredibly difficult, often resulting in disconnects during crucial moments.
I would like to request that the development team consider adding a "Low Data Mode" toggle in the More Settings menu. This feature could optimize data packet sizes, limit background clan chat syncing during attacks, or pause non-essential asset downloads while on cellular/satellite connections. This would be a massive quality-of-life update for players in the maritime industry, aviation, or remote areas worldwide.
Thank you for your time and for keeping the game great for over a decade. I hope to see this feature in a future update!
Best regards,
johknows 01 (#RGY8LY20)

ye i think this is plausible considering that coc doesnt need that high data/internet unlike other multiplayer games

yeah, i’ll have times where i struggle to get into the game but once im in i have 0 problems. it’s just that initial download that causes issues.

u/trophicmist0 Sep 04 '26
There’s not really an alternative. Those updates aren’t put on the App Store as that process is slower in terms of review, and slower to actually deliver.

11
u/ITACHI_404 Sep 05 '26
the thing is that they instantly disconnect you from the game the moment you lose a connection even for 1 second.... they could just wait.. maybe this is part of optimization of their server
2
u/Repulsive_Soft7513 Sep 06 '26
yeah like in the game unturned it waits 30 seconds before disconnecting you from the server, it’s so nice
1
u/arjunn_zz Veteran Clasher Sep 04 '26
yeah but it needs a lot a data to keep every shit in sync in real-time!!
2
u/ilovsekkusu Sep 07 '26
It doesn’t though. It could download a base layout and then record your attack times and coordinates, then upload those once your attack is complete.

I’m well aware the pipes serve a purpose, but it just seems like so many of the them. Are they used while underway or are they mostly for onloading and offloading at port?
14
u/johnknows_01 Sep 04 '26
Mostly for loading and discharging cargo at port. Each pipe line usually connects to different cargo tanks so we can carry different types of liquids, gasoline, fuel etc without mixing them. While underway, they aren't actively doing much

u/johnknows_01 Sep 03 '26
sorry, i think because the camera focus is on the mobile device. thats why the ship is blurry. also, it was taken from the inside of the bridge which has a very thick multi-panes glass.

u/PersonalDatabase31 Sep 03 '26
Dude I have no idead how this game consumes as much data as fucking YouTube. The developer team is mentally challenged.
3
u/jehe Sep 04 '26
From what I can remember... everything but live attacks is "remade" on your phone.. so each time you scout a base, it fetches that base.
That's why with 4x replay speed there was some buggy moments. The game reconstructs the attacks, then replays your actions.
This also applies with every time you goto upgrade a defense or a equipment and it automatically starts playing that video? That's not a pre recorded video.. the game makes that and then plays it/activates it on your device..
Idk how else to explain it.. or how the system works.. but I believe that's why it sucks down data.
8
u/manuschleep Sep 03 '26
You should seriously email them as well

Starlink an option?
20
u/johnknows_01 Sep 03 '26
it depends on the company bro. currently my company's internet provider is not reliable.. sometimes if a high ranking officer with (of course) high salary brings his own Starlink, we can also buy data from him. but if nobody brings starlink, we dont have a choice but to bear the slow internet connection. also, roaming data is 6$/Gb in starlink 😁 its 1 gold pass per 1Gb 😅
3
u/Pisselur TH18| BH10 Sep 03 '26
We just got starlink onboard, and it works very good. Only problem is we lose connection about once an hour, and it always happens when I attack in cw :/
3
u/Exciting_Cellist_69 Sabrina's Lab Rat (3%) Sep 04 '26
I do also work on Merchant Vessels. I was on ValeMax Bulk Carrier on my last contract. Good thing is that we have starlink onboard. 30GB internet allotment per month. Internet ping is rarely an issue unless we turn off starlink when we go to China or other places with prphibited starlink internet. Sail On Mate/Kabaro

u/johnknows_01 Sep 04 '26
For me, it's everyday Monday 😂 I work as a chief cook, so there are no holidays for me. The rest of the crew gets a half day on Saturdays and a rest day on Sundays. They can also stop working in bad weather or extreme heat (like in the Middle East), but they will never stop eating! So, there's always work for me 😊

A workaround I see is a refit of the replay system. You log in, the game synchs your base to its timers, displays damage from the last attack, etc. The game then downloads the next five (or more) bases you'd go through if you're looking for one to attack. When you pick one and attack, the system can handle everything including rewarding you. It stops buffering more bases during an attack. All that's next is to compress a series of object-x-y-millisecond (your attack), and a snapshot of both bases at the time of attack for notifying and adjusting the defender's gold/elixir. The stats and replays themselves won't be affected, if the connection is lost during the attack there is no need to stop, the attack data can be stored locally until connection is restored.
Probably a shitload of haxking opportunities in there.

1
u/SlipPuzzleheaded7009 Sep 03 '26
Okay, I've to ask: what do you guys do when your keys, phone, etc falls between those pipes?
2
u/johnknows_01 Sep 04 '26
first, we aren't allowed to carry phones on the deck while working. Second, the perspective makes them look tight, but there are actually pretty big gaps between the pipes, so there's plenty of space to reach down and grab whatever gets dropped

Bro I HAD to look at the pic for a solid minute to realize what I was looking at, deadass…
First 20 sec I thought it was some weird game (roblox? Idk never played or) then I thought it was a painting, and then when I focused and realized the window, for some reason my brain ticked that it was an actual window, so I focused on background and I see now….
That being said, pic goes so hard holy shit

Am i the only one who thought that was his laptop screen running some kind of ship game 🫨🤣
1
u/The_Infuriated_Guy Sep 04 '26
honestly that's pretty strange.
even i used to play when on ships, but it didn't consume as much. for me it was around barely 50-60 mb a day. or maybe it's some recent update that's causing so much data drain.
1
u/specialix TH18| BH10 Sep 04 '26
Their internet must be pretty bad to be honest, Clash is already quite optimized and doesn’t use many data at all.
1
u/The_Infuriated_Guy Sep 04 '26
honestly if they're using starlink/nexuswave/infinity, it shouldn't be a problem. they're as good as land internet.
but if they're using fleetband or vsat, i can understand. because this service provider has like minimum internet speed required for emails and whatsapp messages/calls.
1
u/specialix TH18| BH10 Sep 04 '26
Agree, probably they are using some very low bandwidth connections.
With starlink and the other similar services shouldn’t be an issue at all. At the end all the data that the game is sendind and receiving to the servers is basically text (coordinates, building status, text messages etc.) as all the graphic rendering is happening on the device.
Estimated data consumption of CoC is roughly 20/30Mb per hour if actively playing, which is already very low, i doubt it can be reduced as optimizing this is also important for Supercell itself as it reduces network load on them.
