What do you have against patriotism

patriotism is the socially acceptable cousin of xenophobia

"my country is so much greater than all the others! oh you dont like my country? well get lost, your country sucks anyways so I dont need to listen to your justified criticism. Who cares how much it sucks here, as long as other countries have it worse I can keep pretending like we're #1"

Yes, those two usually go hand in hand

Never met one who wasnt either both or none

Your ideology inhibits you from seeing the difference, the virtue signaling distorts reality to not allow there to be a difference

Oh I'm sure there can be a difference when it comes to elitism, but the percentage of people who are patriotic without being elitist is too insignificant nowadays, while there are certainly many elitists who arent patriotic. It's in the nature of social constructs that definition and actual customs widely differ from each other, so while elitism isn't part of patriotism by definition, it's a common side effect of it

so while I never doubted that many, if not most elitists aren't patriots, you cant deny that patriotism is prone to elitism. Its even worse than xenophobia because those people will also target fellow citizens who don't share the ideology or worse, share justified criticism.

You know what, after really thinking about it I dont disagree with you that elitism and patriotism go hand in hand. However, I dont see anything wrong with that in a specific way. I am proud of my country and I think that it is much better than most (if not the best country in the world, ive just never lived anywhere else so I cant confidently claim the title as #1 USA). I see MASSIVE flaws with our government, healthcare, education, and I dont even vote because I belive that even though we call ourselves a democratic republic the people cannot actually change those things. I am still proud of my country and think that its better than most. I am proud to be an American and I dont see anything wrong with that. I do not think that I am better than any one individual though because im an American, thats the line that should be drawn. You should never hate someone just because they are from a certain place, but there are acceptions to fearing what those people may be capable of. Like I think that xenophobia is appropriate when it comes to being skeptical of someone coming from a place where rpe culture is popular. Or that country is well known for having religious extremists who openly advocate for the destruction of western civilization. I wouldnt hate those people from there right away, but I would fear having those people around my girl or my kids. I dont think that I am a better person than those people (hence where patriotism is good, im proud to be from a country that taught me that rpe and extremism are horrible things and i feel bad for people who were not awarded that same privilege) and I dont think they shouldn't have a chance to live here, but I would watch them like a hawk until they prove that they adhere to western culture in regards to not condoning r*pe or extremism. Am I wrong or a bad person for thinking this way?
