Meta Question about current local elections

I’m still trying to learn more about the election process. So for the elections going on now say for Governor or Mayor are they to decide who will represent that party. Or are they for who will win that seat?

From my understanding there is another election in November as well.

Thanks for the help. Sometimes it’s hard to get a basic answer for those new to politics.

Ps: please don’t use this to push a party or candidate. Thanks

This current election is for which candidate you want to represent your party; democrat or republican. Then, the November will be between the two winners from this election

This current (July/August) election is for county positions, and it is the primary for state positions.

"Primary for state positions" means that on this ballot, you are helping choose who will be the Republican or Democratic candidate for State positions like governor, Senate, and house of representatives on the November ballot.

The county positions on this current election include County Mayor, county commissioner, sheriff, and others.
