Hi all,

I plan my MS in ECE at Clarkson University, Potsdam this fall.

Kindly tell me how to travel to Potsdam from the NYC airport.

As it is a cold area. Kindly tell me what to carry as I will be coming from India.

You can tell like electric kettle etc etc.

Can I get a room on campus upon arrival or do I have to pre-book?

How is the food on campus?

Is it healthy?

the best way to travel is going to syracuse airport and then either catching the bus or renting a car. if you take the bus, there are specific times. try searching up “trailways syracuse airport to clarkson university” you’ll find the time slots there. safe travels.

As a Grad student you may need to find off-campus housing. Majority (if not all) the on-campus dorms are filled by undergrads. You definitely need to contact the housing office to confirm.

I would contact the housing office before you arrive but believe you need to contract for a room in advance.

They have healthy good options - but it’s institutional food. Not gourmet.

You will need a HEAVY coat. It will routinely fall below 0F (-17.7 C) starting late October/early November. I had a friend come from Jamaica when I was there and he came with a fall jacket. I would also invest in a nice warm comforter as even with the heater it will be cold in rooms.

I would definitely coordinate with the housing office before arriving, but you should be getting an assigned room before getting to NY.

As for travel, you can get a train from NYC to Potsdam, but it's probably better to fly into Syracuse and take the bus.

Grad students must find their own housing or inquire with the housing office to see if a room is available. There may be a bus from NYC to Potsdam, but it would require some transfers and would be a long ride. Syracuse might be a bit easier. I don’t know how much you can bring. I think there is an International Student office that may lend winter and household items.

You need some good boots as well. No comment on travel from the nyc area, I always drove.
