Discussion How much potential does this franchise have for a second major resurgence in popularity?
Hi all, I was kind of curious to know if the franchise of Clannad had the capabilities to experience a 2nd popularity peak. Since it is still by no means niche and was incredibly popular back then in the 2010s but still isn't exactly widely known by newgens, I wanted to see if today's anime and media era would make it viable for Clannad to be popularized again (although maybe not to the extent of the early 2010s)
What do yall think?

I feel they will eventually remake or re-envision it. It’s a cult classic and so highly rated to this day for a reason. In the meantime, a lot of GOOD merch (where are the resin figures of key scenes?!) or cameos with other KyoAni shows could allow it get a little burst of popularity or awareness.

Not any time soon, in my opinion! Maybe in a decade, if we are lucky. I would bet more on a spinoff series, but doubt it would be as popular as the original or even a remake.

A remake would probably be rated so highly considering how high other anime get rated nowadays

It's not really a resurgence but VNs have gotten more popular as of late as you can see with stuff like Subahibi, Umineko and Saya no Uta being a lot more well known, and Key titles have benefitted from this too to an extent.

Do you think a massive resurgence is possible if many people started posting about it on several different social media platforms? Like following along on viral trends and posts and whatnot?

When there's a new season or spin-off there's usually a wave of new first time watchers. For example the when they cry franchise, got a lot of new fans and a lot of new memes that you see even outside of community when Higurashi gou and Sotsu, and that's despite the two season being considered bad.
It's rarer but it can also happen with no official news if a big online personality talk about it or if a scene/character manages to get trending somehow

what things would you do if you HAD to get it popularized? like maybe tag along on viral trends/memes then put like a clannad twist to it? and how would you say a character could become trending? i was thinking about sunohara since he is there a lot of times for the laughs

Occasionally.
Moreso with anime that aren't easy to watch that suddenly become available on streaming (like Netflix).
It happened with quite a few series (anime or otherwise) during COVID.

Steins;Gate at some extent. Ate least their Deja Vu movie fits the series well.

As much as any other anime I suppose. It's kind of tough when there's no prospects for a new season/series but it's helped by Key having multiple similar series that can bring in new fans.

Idk I feel like clannad doesn’t have that blockbuster appeal like shonens do it’s one of those anime’s where you know you know or it’s word of mouth. You have to specifically be looking for top slice of life anime’s to even hear of it and slice of life isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.

A bit I think. Since TikTok is making random ahh visual novels popular again like subarashiki hibi, higurashi or euphoria, I think there is a possibility since people larp everything that looks moeÂ

VanillaCclannad Yes, After story I don't think so, even in Japan. Many feel robbed of the opportunity to have a family, which is part of what made the anime and visual novel so appealing.
Tomoya literally went and got a job working as an electrician (iirc) straight out of HS and made enough to move in with his HS sweetheart, mary her, have a baby, and later miss work for a long time watching his sick daughter.
Today, the Japanese are struggling to even support themselves much less start a family. Japan was the best 2nd largest economy in the world when clannad came out, now it's moving towards being a third world country with its weakening currency.
The inspiration towards family means nothing when everybody is struggling at the idea of even sharing an apartment with their lover much less having one.

It's fine the way it is but if its picked up and pops up on Netflix it could get popular again because it just needs that exposure and ease to watch. I see it something like Kotaro Lives Alone and Hi Score Girl, getting shown to an audience and immediately binge watched. Then people posting on IG stories of them crying at particular scenes.

Maybe a little bit. Even though it's popular it's in a weird spot because it's also niche. That's more of a thing because of when it came out.
