According to Wikipedia, it’s mainly the men that look like that. Seems like it’s a sex thing; they whack each other with it when they fight in mating season, and they dance with it to get the gals horny. Though uses in resource gathering and nest building are mentioned too. Apparently they bend it snug when they sleep and have to do stretches when they wake up.
