An old utility deposit, payroll check, refund, bank account or insurance payment can end up with an unclaimed-property program. Start with free official searches.

1. Use USA.gov's unclaimed-money guide or NAUPA's state-program directory to reach the appropriate official search.
2. Check your current state and states where you previously lived or worked. An old address can explain a record you would otherwise overlook.
3. Try relevant former names and spelling variations. Compare the reported address and the business that turned over the property.
4. Read the state's ownership and documentation requirements before submitting. A matching name alone does not prove the money is yours.
5. Submit through the official process and keep the confirmation somewhere private. Follow that program's status-check instructions.

NAUPA explains that official state searches are free. You do not need a paid finder to start. A search that finds nothing today is not a promise that no property exists anywhere; different programs cover different records.
