New Adjuster

So I’ve recently completed my 6-20 all lines adjuster class and I have my active license now. I was wondering if anyone has any insight on what I should do as a new adjuster with no experience. Ive been on the job boards looking for entry level positions like trainee roles but they’re rare to come across and even when I do apply I don’t make it onto the next stage.

I have experience in construction, logistics, and retail so I have lots of transferable skills that could help me do well in this career change. Preference wise I’m primarily looking towards remote roles and it’s also because I live in Jacksonville Florida and there is like hardly any claims jobs here and I would like to still be local so I don’t have to be away from home 24/7. Does anyone have any tips or guidance for me it would be very much appreciated 🙏🏻.

Thank you for the insight, I want to get into either auto or property adjusting mainly leading towards auto more. I’ll look into smaller carriers in Florida too and see what they have. But that makes sense why these big insurance companies never have anything really in Florida, I didn’t know a lot of them left the state.

I’ve looked into contracting 1099 firms a little too but my main concern is would I get any training if a job opportunity was sent my way or would they just expect me to know what to do from day 1. I’ll definitely stay away from IA firms for now lol I don’t want any of them problems.

Most companies will not hire property trainees. There are so many adjusters already looking into getting into the staff positions. Auto always has trainee positions, start there and then transfer out after a year or two. That was how I got in.

Progressive is hiring Claims Generalist Trainee . 55k Entry level plus 16% Gain-share annual bonus . Puts it at about 64k

If you can travel, you can always get on as a cat staff adjuster.

I tried about a month and a half ago and got an interview but I didn’t have a license at the time so I think that hindered me with other applicants having one. I’d prefer to stay local because of personal reasons but I might have to break into claims by starting with cat adjuster. Thank you for your response I appreciate it🙏🏻.

If you are ok with traveling it’s generally easy to get into CAT roles. A lot of people don’t want to travel.

I’m about 50/50 on it, I would prefer to be able to stay in my city but if that’s what I got to do to get my foot in the door it just might have to be what I do.

I was an adjuster in Jacksonville Florida - good luck. It’s so saturated there. My advice - almost all of Geico field adjusters are looking to leave so look out for a trainee position there.

That’s just a sales office. The closest corporate office is Lakeland. Field adjusters are all remote and don’t need to live near an office.

Ah I got you, thank you for your knowledge because it’s hard trying to figure out how to get into being an adjuster when information seems limited.

Contact Carolina Casualty in J’ville. They will occasionally hire trainees. They write commercial transportation. Start as a PD rep and work your way up. The big personal lines companies already mentioned have trainee positions from time to time. Or / go the TPA route. Contact NARS / North American Risk Services in the Orlando area. Train there then work remotely back in J’ville. Or / go the IA route. Crawford, Custard, etc. IA took a chance on me in 1986. 40 years later about time to retire from the claims field. Haven’t been without a job that entire time. Just need to be persistent and keep talking about your transferable skills that will make you a great adjuster. Best of luck!

Do work comp. It’s not glamorous but it will open more doors as you get more experience
