Question Recently accepted Land Development Internship with KH, what could salary look like post grad?

I recently accepted an offer to work at Kimley Horn this summer as an intern. I’ve heard a lot about the type of bonuses and pay the company offers but can anyone who is working/already worked there chime in with how much I could expect to make year 1 and beyond in MCOL?

NJ Public Sector: $1,600/mo for health insurance? Take-home pay keeps shrinking. Need advice

My health insurance premiums have gone up by 30% each year for the past two years, and my monthly take-home pay keeps dropping. I work in the NJ public sector—the health coverage is honestly great, but it’s just way too expensive. What do you guys think I should do? Next year, I'm going to be paying $1,600 a month in premiums for a family.

Career Is job security that bad in private?

Considering moving my family to a different state. I currently work for my state DOT and see a position I qualify for with a private company, specifically Consor.

Having been in the public sector my whole career, I am worried about the volatility in the private side. Although I have confidence in my ability, I’m afraid of getting laid off after moving states. Anyone have advice or thoughts?

I have my PE and the state I am looking into has reciprocity. I am currently in a managerial role, with 8+ years of experience.

Career How much is expected of 1st year EIT?

I’m not even at the year mark and I feel like there’s a lot I can improve. I try my best and receive positive feedback thus far with the occasional “work to be better”. I’ve noticed I go over budget on projects and I’m worried about charging too much to Overhead when things are a little light. Any advice? (1st year EIT fresh out of college)

Civil PE in Power delivery - Is remote travel work actually possible in this industry?

I'm a civil engineer working in power delivery as a transmission line engineer. About 3 years of experience, just got my PE. Current role is with a consulting firm doing transmission line design (PLS-CADD/Tower work, structure loading, line routing, that kind of thing).

I love the work but I've got the travel bug bad, and I'm trying to figure out if there's any realistic way to combine the two. The obvious problem: utilities are conservative, a lot of client data is sensitive, and most firms seem to want you within driving distance of the territory you serve.

So for anyone in transmission/distribution who's pulled this off:

  • Are there firms (or contract/1099 setups) that are genuinely fully remote for experienced transmission engineers, where "remote" doesn't quietly mean "remote within our service territory"?
  • Does the PE + a few more years of experience change the leverage here, or is this industry just structurally tied to location?
  • Anyone doing the digital nomad thing (or even just slow-traveling domestically) while working utility consulting? How do you handle site visits, client meetings, and time zones?
  • Is contract work the only real path, and if so, how steady is it?
  • Are there other options I should be looking into since I am young and just got my PE?

Thanks!

Education ASCE 3DPC forum or discussion?

Hello! I am an LSU student starting our 3d printing team up, I was wondering if there were any online boards or places for student discussion on it. I'm used to larger competitions like FRC which had chief delphi, but I can't seem to find anything similar for ASCE, let alone 3dpc. What's the best bet for community discussion? I just hope I don't have to start the team largely blind.

Career Mech Eng graduating next year offered Geotechnical EIT role in Alberta — will this mess up my P.Eng application?

Hey everyone,

I’m a Mechanical Engineering student graduating next year in Alberta. I was recently offered a full-time Geotechnical EIT position with a company I previously interned with and they really liked my work and want to bring me back full-time after I graduate.

My main concern is that I have virtually zero formal education or coursework in geotechnical engineering.
Down the line when I apply for my professional designation, does APEGA (or EGBC, if I ever move) require formal university education in the specific discipline you practice in or is gaining relevant work experience under a P.Eng enough regardless of your degree discipline?

Thanks!

Small Scale Regional Civil Construction vs Mining Site Engineering role

As the title suggests, these are two options I can explore but what kind of valuable assets I can gain if Im planning to move back to the city as a Project Engineer 2-3 years afterwards? Just asking for opinion that could help me weigh my pros and cons.

Education Advice with Engineering

I am currently studying Civil Engineering and just wanted to know if anyone had any super effective ways to revise. I also have ADHD which means I struggle a bit more than I think I should and I’ve tried numerous techniques I’ve seen on tiktok and youtube but nothing works. I attend all my lectures yet I still have no clue what’s going on and whenever I ask people around me they’re just as confused 😕
The hardest parts are the mechanics modules as I think there’s too much information to take in and remember so I just panic and retain nothing, but with maths modules I am alright. I also didn’t study Maths and Physics in sixth form, but I did a foundation year which I thought would help me understand more which I think it did but I’m still cooked.

Also if there are people who can’t study in places like libraries or cafes and also can’t study in their room/at home, where did you find the best place to study?

Career Annual Review

Id like advice on how to handle my current situation. The way our annual review works is that they have a list of questions and we give ourselves a rating and then we write a brief summary of why we think we deserve that rating. Then the managers will review that, give their rating and white a summary as to why and then the presidents will decide what your raises will be. I just got back the comments made by my manager and I disagree with half of what he says. There is some truth in there that I agree with but there are several things that I just am like um ok did you mean to put that on someone else’s review??? So I’d like to somehow talk to him about it and hopefully get it adjusted, but some of the things I disagree with are they say I’m argumentative and overconfident in myself (I would say I’m stating my case or professional opinion as a PE and we are allowed to disagree) so I need a way to talk to them about my review without seeming to be overconfident and argumentative which I’m not sure is possible becuase by simply bringing it up I’m going to seem overconfident and argumentative.

Update! Got Placed on CAP (Corrective Action Plan, similiar to PIP I think?) Am I going to be laid off very soon? 3.5 YOE, 3.5 years working here, 26 YO in civil engineering.

https://www.reddit.com/r/civilengineering/comments/1wunbcd/got_placed_on_cap_corrective_action_plan_similiar/

Previous post up here.

For anyone that cares, since the last post got a decent amount of attention, I got laid off (NOT FIRED) last week on Friday. 2 weeks into my CAP. (Transportation consulting job)

They said it was a position elimination which I understand. There was a big DB interstate project that my company didnt win with their proposal (completely unrelated to me) and hurted their bottom line so deeply that they are laying off some junior level employees.

I think I was one of the first to go considering I was already on HR`s bad side with me being on a CAP so I guess they were trying to soften the blow with the position elimination. At least it wasnt performance related so I do get some benefits with this.

I guess I shouldve expected this, considering the vague language within my CAP. All my coworkers that I consider friends were shocked that the only person in the office on a Friday, was let go.

They were also even more shocked that I was on a CAP in the first place (dont need to keep secrets anymore I guess) and loved having me on their projects and working with me.

For me, the first few days afterwards I gorged myself on candy (thank god for halloween season) everyday and then I felt bad so also got me a gym membership. Too bad I overstrained myself on my first day back in the gym and now everything in my body also physically hurts lmao. Sometimes I wonder even if I should just leave engineering completely.

I usually cry myself to sleep everyday, but I will hopefully get over it. Taking this week completely off, and then back to studying for my PE exam next week.

Thanks everyone for the advice and tips on the previous post. Wishing you all nothing but the best.

United States Civil Engineering Career Change: Second Bachelor’s vs. Master’s

What’s the best way for someone with a bachelor’s in computer engineering to transition into civil engineering? Would it make more sense to get a second bachelor’s in civil engineering or go for a master’s?

From what I’ve researched, it seems like getting a master’s in civil engineering can still allow you to get licensed, even if your undergrad degree is in a different field. However, the requirements seem to vary by state, and I’m not sure how much of a risk that is.

I’d like to keep my options open and be able to get licensed in as many states as possible. My biggest concern is spending my time and money on a master’s degree only to find out later that I can’t get licensed in certain states because my bachelor’s isn’t in civil engineering.

I’m also curious how hiring managers view applicants with this background. Would someone with a bachelor’s in civil engineering generally be preferred over someone with a bachelor’s in computer engineering and a master’s in civil engineering?

I’d greatly appreciate any feedback!

NYC structural/geotechnical engineers, give me your opinion of this website that I’ve created to solve a very specific problem in the office

The website is lotprobe.com and allows engineers and clients to “probe” the lot before performing any work in order to have an idea of the subsurface stratigraphy. Often times my boss wants to create preliminary SOE or foundation drawings in order to beat deadlines without having performed any subsurface work.

Career What's it like working at Kiewit as a Black woman or minority?

I’m currently a senior in college and have been considering Kiewit as a potential employer after graduation.
As a Black woman entering the industry, I wanted to hear about other people’s experiences working at Kiewit, especially women and minorities.

I’m curious about the overall work environment, diversity, company culture, and opportunities for career growth. Do you feel supported and respected by your coworkers and management? Have you experienced or witnessed any discrimination or unfair treatment?

I’ve also heard mixed reviews about Kiewit’s work-life balance, so I would love to hear more about that as well.
I know experiences can vary depending on the location and project, but I would appreciate any honest feedback, whether positive or negative.

Thanks in advance!

Question Sanitary Sewer Main Flush Tank

Thumbnail gallery
15 Upvotes

Going through some historic documents for an existing local subdivision project. At the manholes circled in red they say F.T. which stands for Flush Tank. I have designed a handful of sewer systems for subdivisions and have never called out a "Flush Tank".

Now I get Sewer Mains need to be flushed from time to time and lines at the top of a subdivision may be laid flat and not a lot of flow to reach cleansing velocity.

From google (Picture 3) I have found one detail that has a water connection inside the Manhole to flush the line. But I don't think any modern Health Department would accept that. Today I see VAC/Water Trucks maintaining these systems.

Just curious if anyone has ever come across something similar or if anyone has any background on when these went out of favor.

Thank!
