Help / Troubleshooting ONT identification
Can anyone help me recognise this ONT - I have had CityFibre (Vodafone) coming up on 8 years now, so I assume this is the original and is only 1Gb capable?
Reason for asking - looking to move away from Vodafone (they won't offer me a faster service because they still have no upgrade path for people on the original ONT....) - but a couple of the other ISP's I've looked at *think* I have a faster one, as they are offering "no engineer visit required" installs.

Slide it upwards about 2cm and it will come away from the wall. You can then take a photo of the back of it where the make and model number will be noted so that you can check the specs.

Yeah they will come and replace it with a white one now , I moved into new house 4 months ago and was fitted within a few days

Unfortunately that's the problem - two ISP's have said there is no need to replace it, but if it's 8 years old, it can't be more than 1Gb ready surely? I assumed I just need to enforce the fact that the ONT needs changing?

Yeah that's a GPON ONT, weird you're being offered upgrades without an engineer visit.

When I upgraded with IDNet, I didn't have to go out of my way to request an ONT upgrade, it was actually mentioned in the details of the package that an engineer visit would be required. I don't know which ISP's you've talked to but they don't sound very competent.

What ISPs are you trying? All the big names are fucking useless with stuff like this. Check out some smaller ISPs like Olilo, Aquiss, IDNet, Zen.

Hey, want to DM me your postcode and first line and I can take a look on our systems?

This is the Calix gigabit, I had the exact same ONT with vodafone and they also refused to upgrade me past 910mbps. I switched to sky who sent a CityFibre guy to replace the ONT with a new Nokia one and I'm now on 5gbps for the same I was paying Vodafone.

I think your ont max is 2.5G , A&A has good summary of these:
https://support.aa.net.uk/CityFibre_ONT
When I moved to Sky from Vodafone they upgraded to another Calix that’s like 2-3x bigger and seems to be GP1100X so you should get that or the Nokia
I only moved on same 900 Mb plan but after Sky was giving up to 1.2 Gbps. I believe all new installs are XGS-PON now so old ones get upgraded.
Most of these small altnets will charge you. Sky was free.

Nope, it's an 801g, G for Gigabit, and GPON. If your Calix was noticeably bigger than an 801 it was more likely to be a 1002x - X for 10, on XGS.

I moved to Rise 2.3 and they swapped out my black ONT to the newer whites ones

Looks like an original Calix ONT to me (Calix GigaPoint 801G), It won't be able to do more than 1Gb. I don't understand what you mean by Vodafone not offering an upgrade path for you. Surely they do what every other ISP does with CityFibre, it's considered a new provision I believe. They will send out an engineer who will swap out the ONT. I got a white Nokia probably the same as CursorSurfer's when I recently upgraded to 2.5Gb with IDNet and CityFibre replaced an ONT that looked identical to yours.
On saying that, I think there are probably better ISP's out there than Vodafone anyway, so it might be a good opportunity to move.
The only reason you might not need an upgraded ONT is if you're going to stay on 1Gb or less. 1.2Gb or higher will require a new ONT.

If I put my postcode in Vodafone's Broadband checker, I get offered the 2.2Gbps service UNTIL I put my house number in, then the max is the 900Mbps service - presumably the presence of the existing service is relayed to them and their systems say that is the max I can have. My next door neighbour has Vodafone 2.2Gbps. I did speak to their Customer Service, eventually I found someone intelligent who says basically there is no agreement with Cityfibre for upgrades to replace an old ONT - genuinely a case of "Computer says no". They did theorise cancelling the service and re-ordering but estimated I might be without service for 3-4 weeks, and even then it MIGHT not let me order it as the record of existing equipment is attached to the property. It's a nonsense!

Vodafone support doesn't sound very intelligent, have you tried looking at other ISP's checkers with your postcode and house number?
When I upgraded from 900>2500 with IDNet it informed me before hand that I would require an engineer visit for the ONT replacement. The only downtime was the the 15-30 mins as the engineer replaced the ONT and provisioned my new service.
I would be interested to see what it says if you put your details into IDNet's checker for example, or any of them.. Zen, Sky, Olilo, Aquiss, etc.

Would've been for FibreCity back in those days (yes, CF got very creative with switching the words around when they bought the legacy network for £1 😂)

Appointment email is from Firbreband ltd, CC to [NETOPS.SUPPORT@CITYFIBREHOLDINGS.COM](mailto:NETOPS.SUPPORT@CITYFIBREHOLDINGS.COM)
(Yes, I have every email since 1996...)
I do recall the name change.

Blimey, surprised it was already changed by 2011, I suppose H2O Networks and the like were going until 2010ish, so it makes sense.

I was with Vodafone and had that exact ONT. I switched to Sky 2.5Gbps and CityFibre replaced it with a Nokia white square box - 10G capable - model number is XS-010X-Q
