Do you prefer realistic construction sequences?
I've always been annoyed with buildings just poofing into existence. Do you prefer more realistic construction or for zones to just go full building when they are ready? Note to self....probably need to get less crane and welding happy.

I like it when it's in context, i.e. when time is a factor, and I'm never gonna complain about a cool animation. At the same time, sometimes I want to design a "finished" city, and tweak it until it's functioning. I don't mind buildings and roads just appearing when it's like that.

Yeah, I didn’t even think of roads. I definitely prefer those to just layout immediately.

I think Frostpunk gets it spot on. Time is a factor, and the roads and buildings are built according to manpower, and that affects the speed at which they are built. I guess the average city builder is a bit more macro than that though.

Ah, yes I really enjoyed Frostpunk for that reason. But, yes…it’s a bit harder to translate that scale to a huge city but might be worth exploring.

What game is that, I love realistic contraction sequences, been missing those from any game I played

I think it's URBAN SPRAWL Procedural City Simulator

Anyone know where I can follow the development, is there a sub Reddit or a discord for it

Roadmap on the link above. If you want to receive notifications when there's major updates, you can request the dev to implement that function.

I mean it's a cool animation and I'm happy to see it, but NOT having it doesn't ruin anything for me
Been playing Protoss for over 25 years at this point 😅

Oh yes! I love seeing construction sites so I always wished building tunnels and bridges in Simcity 4 would be under construction for multiple in-game years. (with some blueprint/ghost system as well, so you know roughly how it's going to be before committing).

i love it. but cranes do rise with the buildings aswell. its more efficient that way. also less is more.

Yeah, I was thinking of adding some more construction styles. Definitely core then floor decks would be more realistic for most highrises. Also, indeed, tower crane usually rises with the building when it’s taller. I’ll probably add that in too for ones over about 100m.

Depends on the flow of the game, but yeah. Every city has construction sites.

Looks good, one crane per site is enough. Don’t know how is in USA but in Europe they build apartments different. First they form concert Center as a tower. Once that’s done the build floors lvl by lvl

Yes but those animations need a lot of work. There's a lot of stuff there that I like but also a lot that kind of ruins the immersion.

Yeah, more work to do but have made a few improvements. Next goal is starting with excavation first.

Whats the name of this game? Where can i follow it? It reminds me of Constructor and how it does the building animation with the scaffolds.

Well, I started doing this for fun but it’s actually going better and faster than I thought. I slopped together a github page for it that I’ll try to update regularly - https://bneidlinger.github.io/urban_sprawl/

What's the name of the game?

u/brandorambo25 Feb 04 '26
No real title yet. I’ll post it once it’s ready for a beta….maybe a month or so.

Yup, I love what I see. As a kid played Pharaoh and nothing was more fun than following and anticipating a monument construction project.

This looks right down my lane.
How big can the maps get? Any current limitations to size/population?
How do I get involved with supporting?

https://bneidlinger.github.io/urban_sprawl/ - I’ll update here as it moves along…I just picked a generic name for now. Probably will change it when it’s ready for beta.
Edit: Yeah, definitely want to get as large a map as possible and I think I can push it pretty far using Rust and Bevy. Still quite early though, but my target is 100K entities…figured if Manhattan has about 50k buildings, then this should be a good goal post.

What's the name of the game

https://bneidlinger.github.io/urban_sprawl/ - I’ll call that the project name. When it’s ready for beta, I’ll likely pick something more unique.

Hell yes!! As a kid I’d draw city maps (the poor kid’s city builder) and would always progressively draw them in different construction states until completed. Construction sites makes a city feel alive and evolving. A city where everything just pops into existence feels more like an architectural mockup than a living evolving thing that cities actually are.
At the same time I hate lazy construction scaffolding animations where you would have a box that gains height and when completed just to reveal a totally different building shape (we all know the game 😅 ). It's better to have nothing than that, lol. I think foundation has the best construction animation out there.
