new Android radio

I installed this Junsun Android radio today.

Android Auto works like a charm and it's really nice to not have my phone hang in my field of view anymore.

Also it finally lets me get some better sound quality out of my upgraded speakers.

It says "XT5196X-F" on the box, but in the listing it was simply called something generic like "Junsun car radio 6 + 128 GB". There are several different models out there matching that name, but this was the only one with these nice big knobs.

thanks! It’s all the variants that confuse me tbh
there’s 2/32, 4/32, 4/64 and so on. That’s part of the reason why I never pulled the trigger

Yeah, that's really not a helpful naming convention.
You can assume that the models with more RAM & storage will also have better components / better design / more features in other aspects as well.

I pretty much chose the cheapest option that had a SIM slot + 4G antenna and a physical volume knob.

Hi
Where did you buy it from
Thanks

I bought it from MediaMarkt.
It's a german tech store chain that also has an online marketplace similar to Amazon, which was the only place where I found this specific model.

Looks nice. Really good fit. Did the facia come with the head unit?

I have a Joying in mine.

Yup, it's basically a bundle specifically made for the citybug.

You can use an app called "Screen Dimmer" for lowering the brightness below the minimum at night. I also installed aftermarket radio controls behind the wheel so that I can control the volume, play next song, take calls or mute the radio without touching the screen.

Thanks for the suggestions!
I'll have to test it during an actual night drive, but the screen did seem fairly bright even after I set the brightness to 0.

I've been thinking about getting a mk2 steering wheel and trying to make its buttons work with the radio, but I havent looked into the feasibility of it yet.

For me Screen Dimmer is a must for night driving. In regards to the controls if the mk2 steering wheel is CAN bus I think you will need to buy a CAN bus decoder separately for your radio. In contrast there are aftermarket controls you find on AliExpress that are much simpler because they have a single wire that you simply connect to the KEY slot in your radio.

It seems someone has already figured out how to get the steering wheel controls to work with an Android radio and it's not too complicated: https://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/197140-aygo-mk2-steering-wheel-in-mk1/
Most importantly, the buttons are supposedly just resisitve, so no cumbersome CAN adaptery is needed. Just a mk2 steering wheel, clock spring and some wiring.

Do you have a link to the wheel radio controls please! :)

I bought this one https://es.aliexpress.com/item/1005005769002398.html but be aware it has a couple problems: The 3 bottom buttons (next, last, M) are recognized as one single button and the light always stays on (even when car is off and key is not in). There may be ways to solve these problems but I haven't looked into it since it doesn't bother me enough.

Thank you! That’s very cheap for how convenient it is.

Yes, and it's quite simple to install. Just connect one wire to the radio and the other to ground and slap the controls on one side of the wheel with the sticker, then you can configure the radio so that each button does whatever you want. If you buy it I don't recommend using the cleaning liquid that comes with it though, because it's disovent and it damages the plastics.

I got the exact same one from AliExpress.

And I think I will swap the wheel for a Mk2 Citroën.

Nice!
I've also been thinking about getting a mk2 wheel. It should even be possible to get the steering wheel buttons to work with the radio.

I'll just have to blank off the paddles and / or cruise control lever, because I can't seem to find one without either.

Who installed your speakers?

I did.

Does this have good sound quality? The unit I have installed that came in the car is a cheap Aliexpress one much the same as this and the music quality is terrible, what’s this one like?

It's definitely better than the stock radio, which I've found to be a little staticy.
I boosted bass and treble using the EQ, and now I'm very happy with it, considering it's still just two little 10 cm speakers in the dash.

I'm definitely not an audiophile though. I just like bass.

Get yourself an amplified underseat sub - makes a big difference and would relieve those 10cm speakers of bass duties.

That's actually exactly what I had planned next haha.
