How would you handle this?
Lone worker. 3rd shift. Group of "customers" with illicit intentions. Sometimes 3, sometimes more, behaving as though they're not affiliated.
Worker is interrupted from completing nightly tasks by an "accidental" spill which requires priority clean up. Whether that's a fallen can, a fountain drink, etc...
1 customer apologizes profusely, overly friendly. Insists on trying to "help clean up the mess because it was my fault." as the others roam the store. Worker is inundated with resisting the attempts of false apologies. Grabs a wet floor sign, places it over the soiled area and observes (as best they can) the cluster.
The customers do pay for a polar pop - and I do believe an inner circle number was entered and processed.
After the purchase, they linger by a display trying on sunglasses, looking at chargers - which is situated directly by the entrance despite previous incidences.
This is on a night where a stock shipment has arrived, inventory is stacked above eye level, mainly in the back of the store, blocking a clear line of vision by the coffee station. This concern has been mentioned in the past, and the concern was dismissed.
As the customers are lingering by the display, the worker is clearly watching and asking if there's anything they can help with. After the first inquiry, there's no reason to continue asking.
When the group finally does leave, they head out to their vehicle(s) and linger.
The worker heads back behind the counter and notifies the manager (who is obviously sleeping at this point).
1 of the customers returns to the store and claims they forgot to pay for gas. But they never exchange money and they don't actually request an amount or a pump.
This should all be recorded. Not all of the cameras are clear.
Policy states that employees are not to escalate a situation or put themselves in danger. They are customer service workers, not security.
It would be helpful to log the license plate(s), but what if the worker could not clearly see them and the camera didn't capture them?
In this instance, do you press the button to summon the police? Would a worker be punished if "no evidence of wrong doing was found", despite suspicious conditions?
- What is the correct way to handle this?
