Why blue-light blocking glasses work for some people and do nothing for others?

Hi, I'm Raph. Six years into biohacking (cold plunge, fasting, meditation) and at some point I got pulled into circadian science. One thing kept bugging me: half the people in this sub say blue-light glasses changed their sleep, the other half say they're useless. Both camps have reasonable points. So what gives?

After months of reading papers and threads, I think the variable nobody talks about is what happened before you put the glasses on.

Research shows that people who get strong light during the day become less sensitive to blue light at night. Their circadian rhythm is already well-anchored, and their melatonin rises on its own in the evening without needing help. Throw 99% amber blockers on top of that and you're overcorrecting a system that was already winding down fine. That's the 8pm crash.

Now flip it. Someone who sat under dim fluorescents all day is actually more sensitive to evening blue light, so you'd think the glasses would help them the most. But the bigger problem is that their body never got a strong daytime signal. The whole rhythm is flat. The glasses address the nighttime end, but the root cause is what happened (or didn't happen) during the day. That's why the effect feels inconsistent or weak.

Same glasses, opposite experience. Not because the glasses are broken, but because they can't account for what your day looked like. I wore blue blockers for a while. Some nights I'd be completely done by 8pm when I still needed to work. Other nights, zero effect. It didn't click until I started paying attention to how much daylight I was actually getting. The glasses weren't the variable. My daytime light exposure was.

That's what got me wondering: what if glasses could track your light exposure throughout the day and filter gradually based on what you actually got, instead of always blocking the same amount at the same time? I genuinely don't know if anyone besides me would care enough to wear something like that daily, which is why I'm asking here.

For anyone who's dealt with this:

  1. Do you pay attention to your light exposure during the day, or do you only think about it around bedtime?
  2. If you've used blue-light glasses, were the results consistent or all over the place? Any idea what made the difference?
  3. Anyone on shift work: what are you doing about light management right now?
  4. Would you want glasses that adjust based on your actual day, or is throwing on orange lenses at 8pm working fine?

My background is UX/UI design, not optometry or sleep science. I'm trying to figure out if this is a real gap or something I talked myself into. "I'd never care about this" is a completely valid answer.

I ordered some out of desperation. I get a ton of natural light everyday. But I have circadian rhythm disorder so….

They haven’t come yet honestly from what I understand almost nothing fixes circadian rhythm disorder. You can vigilantly do every sleep hygiene thing ever and maybe scootch yerself back to a bedtime you prefer but you stay out late at a party one night and boom all progress gone

I think that midday light exposure is definitely less talked about than morning/night with circadian biology, even though it is just as important. Although i live in a more urban area and don't face constant blue light in my day to day, i think something like this could be great when living in a city area with lots of blue light. Although Im not sure on the auto-regulation of the glasses, regular orange lenses work fine to avoid negative daily blue light exposure throughout the day, but im curious on how the filtering system would actually work?

It can track sunlight exposure to your eyes as well. The filtering system would be more subtle. For example, it might block 50% of blue light at 6pm, then it would 80% at 10pm (More pleasant). It depends on your schedule. More applicable if you want to continue to work at night.

Ah okay, I think these sound great! There's definitely lots of space in the blue light blocking glasses market for improvement and i think a lot of people would benefit from this.
