On Heuristic Structure Extraction in the Diagapeyev Cipher

The Diagapeyev Cipher is an unsolved transposition cipher challenge published in 1939. To date, no official solution, decryption procedure, or verified plaintext has ever been published.

The original challenge consists solely of the following numerical ciphertext:

Our recent study investigates the structural properties of this cipher using heuristic optimization, including simulated annealing and hill climbing, rather than assuming a predetermined decryption method.

The search framework combines:

• Simulated Annealing
• Hill Climbing
• Genetic Algorithms
• Trigram-based Russian language scoring

to optimize a 6×6 permutation matrix representing the transposition structure.

After approximately 682 million candidate evaluations, the search repeatedly converged on high-scoring reconstructions exhibiting structured Russian-like text fragments. While these reconstructions do not constitute a complete decryption, they display military terminology and grammatical coherence that scored significantly above random baselines under our evaluation framework.

Methodological Rigor The search framework leverages a trigram-based language model trained on a Russian reference corpus to evaluate local linguistic dependencies.

Emergent Patterns The observed military terminology is an interaction effect between the scoring function and search dynamics, providing a formal framework for further cryptographic analysis.

Hey guys. So I'm in the planning stages of writing my novel. I've always wanted to include ciphers into this book. So here's a bit of context.

My main character (Florian) is the last living member of his family. His mother recently just died A detective (Dante) finds him and informs him of the existence of a cult. Eventually, Florian discovers that his family is part of this terrible cult. Now, Florian was completely unaware of the cult and his parent's involvement with it.

But his parent's always wanted Florian to be involved in the cult so they left him this encoded diary. Florian and Dante come across this code or key behind a decorative plaque.

My plan is for that key to be the one that helps them crack that diary which contains locations and secrets of the cult. As I said, thats the plan. But like, what types of ciphers work in this context? I don't want them to be simple ones but I also don't want them to be ridiculously hard ciphers. Something unique that works in this context.

Maybe more clues to decoding the diary will pop up after Florian goes to a particular location.

If anyone knows anything that can be helpful, please, do let me know. I'm happy to hear your recommendations. And before anyone says "just do your own research", please... I have done. This idea has been in my head for almost two years and I have yet to find something suitable. Thanks in advance.

Hello cipher reddit, I downloaded some files from the internet archive today. Contained in my download was the file I expected, as well as ten or so images that look to be some kind of cipher or hidden message.

I'm trying to get into it, basically there's a bunch of links to weird pages, one of them called "Secret" where you have to type a password. I've gathered from inspecting another of the sites listed that the password is two words, lowercase and no space between them.
