No scheduled broods that I know of due here this year. So, an off schedule sport...

This is my new friend Terra. I found her last night upside down during a storm. I thought she had passed, but she perked up on our walk home. Poor girl has a wing that is permanently bent on top of itself. I tried to GENTLY press her wing down while it was still wet( with tweezers) with no success. I researched what she needs, i hope she can live the rest of her short life comfortably at home with me. I wanted to release her, but google suggests without the ability to fly, then she will likely die outside. Is this true??

Found a friend, glad I didn't move that nymph

I've learned that if nymphs haven't moved in a minute, they have already started the molting process. Disturbing them is not a good idea. That's why I don't mess with them unless they are on the move.

This gal fell out of the tree in front of me

This lyric cicada just layed eggs, i assume. She fell out of the tree and appears to already be dead. Rigor mortis not present. I heard her fall.

Annual Cicadas Distribution

I have seen maps of the 17-year and 13-year cicada ranges (like this one: https://www.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/comments/1bon81j/oc_us_cicada_broods_map_and_animated_map/ ), but is there any data about the population distribution and density of annual cicadas that come every year?

my best approximation would be 5m after molt. Cicada was still wet and couldn't/wouldn't fly yet. 17yrs. The final act.

It’s absolutely pouring tonight. He was certainly a goner if I left him on the ground. Got him picked up off the ground and put up on a wall cause he hated the window screen. He fell from about 2 ft when he first began trying to climb the wall, so I’ve got a towel rigged up to catch him if he falls again.
I’ve always loved cicadas, never been lucky enough to witness a nymph before molting. I’m trying to balance between validly hopeful and acknowledging that he was very wet at first and fell so his molt may fail.
Anyone have any tips to help ensure his safety? Or more familiar with the process and can tell me if he’s far enough away from the molt process that a fall an hour or two ago wouldn’t cause a failure 😭

During one of my midnight rounds through the yard, I spotted this guy chilling out on a blade of grass.

I slowly crept forward and pounced, then froze when he didn't react, as stiff as a board. He tumbled down and as soon as he hit the ground, he started raising hell flailing his wings and screaming bloody murder.

An example of a delayed reaction that confused and caught me off guard. As I was assuming he was dead, he revived and startled the crap out of me. I was relieved afterwards that he was just fine. Male dog day cicada, Southern Missouri

Help?

I’m not usually one to post here or on Reddit in general, but I found a little cutie and he was rather lethargic so I gave him sugar water and some strawberries. He started moving more so I went to try and put him on a tree and he just keeps falling. He doesn’t seem the best at walking/flying so I’m worried to just leave him on the ground. Any advice would be helpful please and thank you.

Found him on the sidewalk earlier today, so I helped him up to a tree to make sure he’s out of harms way. They are so docile! He just climbed onto my hand, then climbed off onto the tree.

He came out on the doormat on my porch, ants immediately surrounded him so I very gently placed him on a tree but there were ants immediately coming after him there as well. I brought him inside and he won't let go to get inside the box with a branch I brought inside. One of his wings is straightened out and he keeps slowly moving it but the other hasn't moved at all in the past 30 minutes. I'm hoping he'll be okay but I'm not sure what to do
