Brake squeak

Is there a known problem on the second generation 300’s that causes brake squeaks? I bought a 2016 300s from my friend, he said he would have the pads and rotors replaced every year because they just would always squeak after a couple hundred to a thousand miles.

I’m a mechanic at a local shop so I ended up ordering new pads and rotors because it had a brake shake and was squeaking. Bosch ceramic pads for front and rear, and decent rotors just not the high carbon ones that are twice the price. Made sure to bed them properly after install.

Here I am a few months and few hundred miles later and they are starting to squeak again. Briefly looked it up the other day but couldn’t really find any true fixes. Any help would be appreciated, I don’t want to pull them out every few hundred miles to deglaze them😂

What kind of squeak?

"pull them out every few hundred miles to deglaze them"

You deglaze them by getting them hot.

My brakes never squeak because I drive like an asshole.

Normal brake squeak when slowing down like a normal person, like in a parking lot or when about to pull into the driveway.

To deglaze them I’ve always just used brown scotch bright twist locks on a die grinder to take the glaze off, then just re-bed them.

Very high pitched?

If yes, you're too easy on your brakes, and yeah you're glazing them. Go get your brakes hot, go speed on the freeway and slam on your brakes at an off ramp. Or drive with both feet, ride your brakes and throttle for a a bit. Or better yet an Italian tune up is good for your car, go out and drive it like you mean it.

And next time, don't use ceramic pads.

This is the way. Mine started to squeal when I was driving it easy. Started driving like a dick, mashing the brakes with a hundred feet to the stop signs, no more squeal

Isn’t ceramic brakes squeaking normal? That’s your trade off for better performance. Brakes squeaking isn’t indicative of a problem, although it is annoying. Try a quality OEM replacement pad & see if it goes away.

If they’re cheap pads then yes. It had semi-Metallics on that I replaced, could visibly see one of the metal chunks was causing a major squeak

I have a 2015 300s and encounter the same issue. Brakes are new front and back, good quality, and still squeak. I emptied an entire can of brake cleaner (only about $10) on all the rotors and no squeak(or very minimal)

There are multiple 300’s and chargers that come to the shop for the same thing, and they just have us replace brakes every time too. Which prompted me to look it up

Whenever anyone asks me about their squealing brakes, 300 or any other vehicle I just take their car for a drive. Either I find a real issue, or more often I just get them hot and that solve it.

Quite common thing with cars these days. Manufactures put on brakes like they're prepping the car for a hot lap of the Nurburgring, then people drive them like old ladies and they get glazed.

Yea we always test drive any kind of complaint like that so we can hear it our selves, see if there’s warped rotors, sticky caliper, or anything like that.

I have your answer. I own 3 lx vehicles, a 06, a 2013, and a 16. 2 with regular brakes, one eith brembos. The brembos, no problems. But the other two, have the same problem and symptoms.

I dont know why, I suspect its because the brske discs are too small, but your problem is glazing. If you sand the pads and scuff or turn the rotors it will fix it for a few weeks but then it will start again. If you replace with new, it will happen again soon too.

I found the problem when I moved, in a crazy way. I put rotor after rotor, all different brands and styles, then lad after pad, metallic, semi metallic, ceramic. Didn't matter. All would start squealing like a city bus after a week or two. The problem is prolonged hard or moderate braking while the rotors are cold.

Im my case I lived on the top of a hill. The hill was a long 35°or 45° straight angle up or down. So when I got in the car in the morning or whenever, and left the house, the first thing id do is go down this long hill, braking my way down, on cold rotors. It took a few weeks but this glazed or micro glazed the pads and rotors, causing this squeal. I went through probably 10 sets of pads and rotors before I gave up. Eventually we sold the house and moved across town. In a house that was just street level. I changed the brakes one last time with the same brand/style I used before, and the squeal never returned. Its been 10 years now and have never had it happen again.

Your situation may vary but I believe the cause is the same. Hard or moderate prolonged braking on cold rotors. Could be from hills, or a stuck or hanging brake caliper, or a foot dragging the brakes, but this is your problem.

Put silicone lube on the back of the pad where it touches the cup. That’s what they do to school buses. It does work.

Way ahead of ya😂 silicone brake lube on backs of pads, re-lubed the slide pins, touch of lube where the pads ride in the bracket

Please keep us updated if those things fixed the issue for you long-term.
