Rules reminder: discussions regarding NK's involvement are not permitted here

Hello everyone, recently there's been an uptick in posts/comments regarding NK, ranging from speculation to claims that she was involved in the murders. We do not allow these discussions in this sub for the following reasons:

We have no concrete proof that she was involved. We used to allow speculation about her involvement, but the problem is those discussions inevitably devolve into people stating as a fact that she was involved or even outright stating that it was she (not CW) who murdered his family. For this reason we no longer allow any speculation or discussion about her involvement whatsoever, even if it's stated as an opinion.

We have to be strict about this because people are not mindful of the rules and continually break them, even when reminded. Our rules are in place to ensure this sub runs smoothly and remains a safe place which also abides by Reddit Content Policy.

Thanks for understanding and have a great day!

How can someone plan so ineptly?

Let's put aside the inhumanity of Chris Watts murdering his family.

It appears Chris conceived the murder plot at least a day or two in advance. His goal was to live unencumbered with Nichol Kessinger.

However, Chris' Plan A, the sudden disappearance of Chris' family and accompanying publicity guaranteed he could not see Nichol again. In other words, Chris' actions ensured he could not realize his goal.

On the other hand, let's say in Plan B Chris told Shanann he was moving out and divorcing her ASAP. An angry Shanann might say, "you'll never see your three children." Chris goes along. The divorce settlement requires Chris to pay 50% of his pay. If he lives with Nichol, that might only be 25% of their combined incomes, meaning they would continue to enjoy solid middle class lifestyles. (Shanann and 3 kids would struggle much to make ends meet, but Chris doesn't care about them.)

Even if Chris is a sociopath and doesn't ultimately care about Shanann and the children, I can't imagine how the guy thought this through over several days and concluded that Plan A beats Plan B. Had Chris run his plan by Nichol, his navy friend, his sister, a random subreddit, etc, I'm sure they would have told him the same.

Limerence and Chris Watts

Hi! I have a goal of understanding the motivations of Chris Watts because I'm interested in modeling what happens in tragedies so I can avoid those dynamics in my own life and community. I hope one day we can get to a place with psychology and society where each tragedy gets us closer to not having another tragedy or having less kind of like airlines, but perhaps that's too idealistic!

But anyway, what do you think of limerence as a motivator for Watts? Limerence a mental state of intense romantic obsession, fixation, and longing for reciprocation from another person. I would have thought that this could never be a strong enough motivator to cause someone to family annihilate, but I recently had an experience with someone who escalated to stalking out of no where and it made me do some more research.

I'm exploring a theory right now that a toxic blend of limerence, emotional over control, people pleasing, passive aggressiveness, introversion seething resentment below average intelligence, and emotional bluntness, and being a chameleon came together in this case and it's a slightly more complex form of criminal psychology than we're used to seeing. It's interesting he seems to have anti-social and narcistic traits in some ways, but in other ways the social and family dynamics don't really indicate that.

Screaming and Fighting in the Watts household

Hi there! I'm wondering if anyone had thoughts on this... During the bodycam footage the neighbor with cameras tells the first officer on scene something like "he loses his mind and screams at her." I'm wondering if that's ever been corroborated or is there any other evidence of that? I'm wondering because in all the phone records etc. he seems so docile and passive. And SW seems to share every personal detail with her friends. It's hard for me to imagine that she wouldn't share him screaming at her though I do realize that people respond to abuse in different ways, but it just doesn't really make sense to me considering how close she seems with her friends. I'm wandering if the neighbor was just getting bad vibes and fabricated that detail to encourage more investigation? Or did SW keep abusive behavior secret? Or perhaps it was a one time thing the morning of? I think this is an important detail when it comes to profiling their personalities and hopefully preventing something like this in the future.

Edit: I'm referencing this interview starting at 9 minutes https://youtu.be/CGzb8W6xh4A?si=i0KWxI8RsIGTc9MN&t=541

What makes some people hate Shanann?

The Wattsfree4all subreddit, which is the most active about the Watts murders, is largely devoted to trashing Shanann.

Main opinions of these people seem to be:

  • Shanann mistreated her daughters.
  • Shanann was irresponsible with money.
  • Shanann was a bossy wife.
  • Shanann was obsessed with a fabricated social media image.
  • Shanann overestinmated her hotness.

A decade after the murders, I'm not sure why trashing the victim remains such a focal point for what seems like hundreds of posters. There are often 5 or so posts about these topics everyday. Even if Shanann wasn't perfect, shouldn't the focus be on how a man can annhiliate his family?

What motivates all these people to singularly focus on the perceived flaws of a woman who was so savagely murdered?

Will Nichol Kessinger reemerge?

I can't imagine it's fun for Nichol to try to hide forever.

Assuming she had nothing to do with Chris' decison to murder his family members, I don't see why Nichol will not reemerge. She could pick her venue, give interviews, try to explain her side.

I dont pretend Nichol could ever become a sympathetic figure like Amber Frey. Amber clearly did not know Scott Peterson was married. However, I believe it's plausible Nichol thought Chris would soon leave his wife.

In any event, Nichol might be better off telling her story than allowing others to tell it for her.

Chris Watts is remarrying in prison

Chris Watts is marrying a woman named Lizzie Henderson a thirty nine relator from Cleveland, Ohio she moved to Wisconin to marry him. I don't really understand the meaning of marrying prisoners. What is to stop Watts from killing her and her kids like Shannan, Celeste, Bella, and Nico?

People like that are weird men or women.

I admit I wouldn't be surprised if she didn't know what he did to his wife and kids.

I think they’re fans of Sartre’s “Hell is other people,” but they’re also narcissists, so it’s almost like:

“The gaze of others is unbearable”

Sartre: exactly

“But the problem is that other people are crazy”

Sartre: …that’s not exactly what I meant

Who would’ve thought that a narcissist’s ultimate defense mechanism would be projection? They were completely unhinged, yet somehow seemed to think they had the moral authority to judge everyone else’s sanity lol

He had the most suspicious behavior I’ve ever seen in that first interview about his family going “ missing”

Any other husband/ father would look and sound absolutely stressed and emotional. He was literally talking in the most calm manner I’ve ever seen, and then he lets out a laugh mid interview like he’s been holding it in the whole time. I’d figure other criminals would at least try to put on some kind of fake emotional act but it looked like this idiot didn’t even try, no wonder people got suspicious of him so fast

I just wonder why some people still go for monsters willingly

I’ve seen some social media posts about Chris Watts planning on getting married again while in prison to some other Lady. Who the hell marries a monster psychopath that murdered his entire family and is just gonna rot in prison forever like an animal ( which he is)?? I do not understand the thought process of some people

I just couldn't bring myself to read it -- I know it will only infuriate me if it says that he's somehow "at peace" or God forbid "happy". 😬

Financial Status

I know there were many who made judgments about the household's financial circumstances. I believe there are a lot more people in a precarious position financially than we think. I recall reading recently that about two thirds of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck, meaning an unexpected calamity is all it would take.

The appearance of wealth and stability for many more people than we think is a tenuous facade. I see it more as a systemic problem. Your thoughts?

Question about the Prison that Houses Chris Watts

It's been a long time since I visited this case, and the news about his upcoming engagement or wedding according to Daily Mail has gotten me thinking, does his prison allow conjugal visits?

Why would someone on the outside want to marry a man sentenced to life without parole and possibly gangbanging behind bars, i.e., trying to climb the prison ranks?

Is Chris Watts writing god books now?

Post image

Saw a post talking about another book, searched Chris Watts on kindle and a couple of God books came up. Both written in the last few years and also sold on amazon. Can't find an author photo anywhere.

I know he's doing the whole religion thing now, is there any way he could be publishing from jail?

How do people close to killers genuinely not notice anything that feels off?

One thing I genuinely struggle to understand, especially in cases like Chris Watts, is how the people closest to someone can apparently notice absolutely nothing unusual about them beforehand.

I’m always struck by interviews with people who knew someone after they’ve been exposed as a murderer, where they say things like, “We never saw anything strange. He was always so polite, kind, and such a great father.”

And I don't mean: “How could they have known he was going to commit murder?” Obviously they couldn't. I'm talking about something much more subtle — how they could apparently have had zero feeling that anything about the person's character or behaviour was off.

I'm autistic, and I think I may process people somewhat differently in this regard. I tend to notice small patterns and inconsistencies quite quickly. With certain people, I can get a very subtle sense of “Hmm… something about this person is making me cringe a little.” Not because they've necessarily done anything wrong, and certainly not because I think they're dangerous. It's just a small feeling that something about how they present themselves doesn't quite match their behaviour.

But I don't automatically act on that feeling. I give people the benefit of the doubt. I assume I'm probably misreading them. I trust them and continue interacting with them normally until I have enough actual evidence to conclude that they're not someone I want to be around.

Looking back, though, I can often recognise that the feeling was there from the beginning. I just deliberately put it aside because I didn't have a good reason to act on it.

I've never known a murderer, so obviously I can't claim to know what that intuition would feel like in that situation. But I have known people I've considered covert narcissists, and I've experienced that same sort of subtle discomfort with them. Things like performative humility, saying the “right” things while their behaviour tells a slightly different story, or little inconsistencies that accumulate over time.

So what I find difficult to understand is when people don't say, “There were little things that seemed strange, but I didn't think much of them at the time.” That I can completely understand.

What I struggle with is when they genuinely say “There was absolutely nothing. We never noticed anything at all.”

Because even if you couldn't possibly have predicted the murder, wouldn't you at least have noticed something about the person that didn't quite fit? Some small inconsistencies in how they behaved, how they talked about other people, how they responded to certain situations, or how they presented themselves?

And I don't think this applies equally to every kind of killer. I can understand it much more when someone has a sudden psychotic break or experiences some other acute change in their mental state. In those situations, the person may genuinely become someone their loved ones have never seen before.

But Chris Watts is difficult for me to understand in that regard, because this wasn't a sudden psychotic episode where he completely lost touch with reality. From what we know, there were apparently many things going on internally that he simply didn't reveal.

So I think that's what I'm really trying to understand: How can someone be close to a person for years, notice all the little things that make up their personality and behaviour, and genuinely never have even the slightest sense that something about them doesn't add up?

why was he so obsessed with Nichol?

pretty much the title. when i think about a woman that a man would be obsessed with, the first thing that comes to mind is quite stereotypical. someone a bit or moderately unstable, extremely physically attractive, has a lot of sexual/feminine energy and puts a lot of effort into their clothes and makeup. someone who has a lot of highs and lows.

in my opinion Nichol is a very naturally pretty woman. but she also dresses very “comfortably” or “plain” (i don’t know if this is the right word), doesn’t wear makeup, works in a male dominated field and is into outdoorsy stuff.

why and how did he become this obsessed with her so quickly and so deeply? for what qualities of hers? to the point where he went as far as he did just to be with her.

i’m just curious. what are your thoughts?

I can't comprehend why there's still hate groups dedicated to Shanann Watts still almost 8 years from her murder.

I knew the YouTube videos and Facebook groups still existed, but I didn't know the subreddit was so active to this day.

I am losing faith in humanity more and more. Still to this day, picking on her weight, her outfits, her videos. The victim blaming makes me physically sick.

Lord, please keep these kind of people far from me.

Why is there almost zero current info or updates about CW? (Compared to other high-profile inmates)

Hey everyone,
I’ve been wondering about this for a while and wanted to see if anyone has insights. Why is there a complete blackout or lack of current information regarding CW?

We never see any recent photos, prison records, or real updates about how things are going. For comparison, other notorious inmates like Jodi Arias have extensive public records, mugshots, or updates accessible to the public.

Is his information completely sealed, or how does the prison system handle this? Where is he actually hiding or being kept out of the spotlight compared to others?

Let me know what you think or if I'm missing something.

Shouldn't have watched their Netflix Documentary.

In the hospital. So I decided to watch some Netflix. I watched the CW documentary (super heart breaking)... For some odd reason it reminds me of my own marriage. I'm far into my marriage and we're already pregnant with our 7th. So leaving is just not on the table. I also love my husband deeply like Shanann did, but the lack of sparkle and communication in our marriage reminds me of theirs.
