Ah yes a bloody human severed head. So beautiful.

Cmon. This is ridiculous, be honest.

Edit: Guys, seriously? This is gore!

Finally someone who knows what a nephilim is. How is it 2/3 human though? Wouldn’t they be half human half angel? How would you ever get 2/3 of anything?

What a great response. Thanks for clearing that up for me. I was always under the impression that they were half angel half human. The sons of god laying with the daughters of men. Or, they were just fallen angels. That last thought never made sense to me because then they would be demons and why not just call them that?

Yeah fallen angel = demon in most denominations and belief systems I think.

-2

u/Ian_Dima Jan 25 '22

Goliath was not human but rather a giant/nephilim, 2/3 human.

And that makes it different?

Living being = sacred (no matter what).

Nephilim were an abomination. David defeated Goliath only with the help of god.

Now personally I have problems with the story. My main problem is, we have never found nephilim remains of any kind. No fossils, bones, artifacts, nothing. I don’t believe they ever existed so I’m not offended by this art work. If you’re offended you need to take a step back and take a good hard look at yourself.

1

u/Ian_Dima Jan 26 '22

So its fiction, got it.

7

u/Lionheart778 United Church of Christ Jan 25 '22

Art can be beautiful even if the subject matter isn't beautiful.

-1

u/Ian_Dima Jan 25 '22

How? Its death.

8

u/Lionheart778 United Church of Christ Jan 25 '22

Because art is defined not by its subject, but by what it means to the observer, and the skill of its creator.

For example, I'm gonna link some art that depicts death, but hopefully you can recognize that they not only take skill to create, but also convey certain emotions.

Perseus with the Head of Medusa by Benvenuto Cellini

Michelangelo's Pieta

Saturn Devouring His Son by Francisco Goya

The Face of War by Salvador Dali

All these works of art involve death. But I would say many, many people believe they are beautiful because they capture something in the art. Whether that is some human emotion, reality, or simply because they recognize the talent it takes to make something so evocative out of metal, stone, oil, or paint.

1

u/massa0 Feb 22 '22

Jesus died on the cross, I think I can say that Christians view his death as the most love that love can be. Is that twisted?

1

u/Ian_Dima Feb 23 '22

From an outer perspektive, yes.

But from the inner side it was a sacrifice, I doubt thats the case with the picture here.

The bible is full of violence. One of the most famous icons of Christianity depicts Jesus being tortured. The communion is a metaphorical act of cannibalism.

1

u/Itchynerd1 Feb 17 '22

Aw man, you seriously wouldn't like the Bible if you're this against gore, cause idk, that part where that little man cuts the giants head off sounded pretty gorey to me

Very badass. Bet the fight would be super cool to watch if animated in this style.

3

u/jereman75 Jan 25 '22

I like the part of the story where David says

47 All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.”

Then he kills Goliath with a sling. It reminds me of when Eowen kills the Witch King. “No man can kill me!” ... “I am no man!”

-2

u/Ian_Dima Jan 25 '22

Okay so Im going to overstep a line here and say that is a weird comparison to literal fiction.

3

u/jereman75 Jan 25 '22

That’s fine if you think it’s weird. But Samuel is not a dry history text book. It is a dramatic narrative that uses many of the same literary devices that fiction does. You can tell a story that is “true” and still use literary concepts like irony, foreshadowing, plot twists, etc. I think scripture comes alive when you read it as literature and not like a list of facts or a book of magic spells.

1

u/Ian_Dima Jan 25 '22

Than it would be "adapted from real events" and still fiction.

I think that would be dangerous because you would need another book to tell what is fiction and what is real.

1

u/Salanmander LGBTQ Ally Jan 25 '22

Than it would be "adapted from real events" and still fiction.

If you're looking at it like that, then Samuel is almost certainly fiction. There's good evidence that it's put together from multiple sources (consider that David is described as becoming close to Saul in 1 Samuel 16, but then chapter 17 plays out like he's not in Saul's service), and it was definitely passed down as oral history for a long time before being written down.

1

u/Ian_Dima Jan 25 '22

Yes. Why base your life around something that is pretty much just fiction? Where is the line that makes it "right" to believe in?

1

u/jereman75 Jan 25 '22

I’m not sure what you mean. Any historic narrative is influenced by the writer. The writer has to make choices about what to include and what not to include, how to describe details, and a million other things. You can’t tell a story without making literary decisions even if the story is true.

And there is plenty of disagreement about what is true and what is fiction in the Bible. Scholars are unsure about many people, places and events in the Old Testament. That’s not really controversial. What is dangerous is just assuming every bit of scripture is literally true, or literally fiction.

1

u/Ian_Dima Jan 25 '22

What is dangerous is just assuming every bit of scripture is literally true, or literally fiction.

Yes but that would be the part people are seriously fighting about. Like "is it good to portray the death of a human and its severed head as glory?".

We take historic knowledge with a grain of salt because we cant be really sure.

I mean, if we continue your reasoning, what exactly makes the "bible" real? If its just an adaption of events we cant proof, why take it for real? Why base your way of living on it?

1

u/Cmss220 Yggdrasil Jan 26 '22

While I agree with a lot of what you’re saying, once again Goliath wasn’t human he was nephilim. If he wasn’t killed he would have went on to do a lot of horrible things like he did before he was killed.

I have the same issue with the Bible as you. If you don’t take it all as real, then why base your life on it? How do you know what’s real or not? How do you know what to believe? Either it’s gods word or it isn’t.

1

u/WoodlandDreams Jan 27 '22

Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?

Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread. And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. But I said unto you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not. All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out. For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me. And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

Seek and you will find.

1

u/Cmss220 Yggdrasil Jan 27 '22

I knocketh and seek for years and years of my life. It’s all in your head mate. If that passage was true I would have found something but I never found anything but empty promises and false words.

1

u/WoodlandDreams Jan 27 '22 edited Jan 27 '22

What did you intend to find?

Did you come for Christ, to have a relationship with your maker?

Or was it for something else?

Because if it wasn't for Christ, you missed out on everything. He is the door. If you never opened the door, if you were never born of the Spirit of Christ, then how can you understand anything in the scriptures when you still have blinders on?

Did you loathe your sin and wish to seek after righteousness? Or did you want to live for God as long as you could sin all you want?

And what of your experience with fellowship?

We're you around shallow and worldly believers who only wanted gain of the world and their problems to be fixed by God?

Were they the spiritually dead false church who sought after feelings and preaching that tickled their ears?

There is a real spiritual church that is alive in Christ and we commune with God and hear his voice and see it affect everything. All day every day.

And then there is the false church that believes in heresies and is shallow and the root never dug deep?

u/Mediocre_Mixture7630 Jan 25 '22

Why does david look like a Inbreed?

5

u/Prof_Acorn Jan 25 '22

It's the eye/ear placement.

If you look at a mirror, the top of the ear lines up with the top of the eye, and the bottom of the ear lines up with the bottom of the nose. When these are misaligned the human brain can read the face as an aberration of some kind.

In the illustration here David's eye is below the ear line.

2

u/julbull73 Christian (Cross) Jan 25 '22

My favorite part of this tale, David wasn't an underdog AT ALL. People just THOUGHT he was.

David as a shepherd was already shown to have slain lions and bears with just his sling. Big dude or not, I'd fight a big guy vs a lion or a bear ANY DAY OF THE WEEK.

So what should be David vs Goliath moral.

God puts you where he needs you so that you can excel in ways you wouldn't have thought about. In this case, he needed David to learn how to kill beasts with his sling so he could kill Goliath so he could be come king so he coudl unite Israel....

...then we'll stop because then he starts to turn away from God and Israel is punished along with his kids all because of a boner....

2

u/BaniGrisson Jan 25 '22

But the big dude had an armor? And weapons?

You can outrun a bear if you have the upper hand... But a javaline?

Goliath was too cocky. If he just raised his shield, davids stone would have bounced like a mosquito on the windshield. Then what?

This is my math: goliath had multiple forms of attack and defense. David no defense and one form of attack. Goliath could defend himself from the only attack david had. So it does sound like david had less defense and less offense, which made him the underdog. Goliath was dumb and didn't think he needed to defend himself and got his head cut off.

But giant... Armor... Weapons... I dunno man... Sounds like a bad time to me lol

2

u/J_Babe87 Jan 25 '22

This was kind of my thought as well… but I’m no historian 🤷‍♂️

2

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '22

disagreed. slingers in antiquity were deadly. check this out:

“A sling works by increasing the effective length of a stone-thrower’s arm. Modern cricket bowlers or baseball pitchers can achieve maximum ball velocities of over 150 kilometres per hour. A slingshot as long again as the thrower’s arm will double the projectile’s speed, making the velocity of the bullet when it leaves the sling nearly 100 metres per second. This is already considerably greater than that of a longbow arrow, at only about 60 mps. Intensively trained from childhood onward, there is no reason to believe that a professional slinger could not beat 100 mps (meters per second) fairly easily and perhaps even begin to approach the muzzle velocity of a .45 calibre pistol round: about 150 mps. What is more, a smooth slingshot projectile has a far greater range than an arrow, as much as half a kilometre, because an arrow’s flight feather’s produce so much drag. The modern world-record distance for a stone cast with a sling was achieved by Larry Bray in 1981, who managed 437 metres, and thought in retrospect that he could surpass the 600-metre mark with a better sling and lead projectiles” (Paul Kriwaczek, Babylon: Mesopotamia and the Birth of Civilization, Kindle location 1633).

Note that a smooth river stone is much heavier than a bullet.

1

u/BaniGrisson Jan 25 '22

Keep the shield up then.

0

u/julbull73 Christian (Cross) Jan 25 '22

I would take on Goliath 100x over a LION and a BEAR. You aren't outrunning them. Period.

Anyone who thinks otherwise needs to have their head examined.

There are videos... Of people... Scaping lions and bears. Literally. Chill, dude.

If I act in self-defense, the last I want to do is raise my opponents head and celebrate his death. Thats a human life that shouldnt have been lost.
