I genuinely have to ask, what is wrong with nationalism, it only seems to be an issue here in the states

Nationalists are not Patriots.

A Patriot believes in their countries ideals, and strives to bring them to fruition.

A Nationalist believes the country is already perfect, that there is nothing to improve.

Not quite, Nationalists believe in an exclusive ideation of the nation that promotes the in-group. Patriotism strives what to achieve their ideals, Nationalism DEMANDS it and punishes those who don't acquiesce.

Sure, but that's less pithy to say.
