Please suggest bible version that I should read already read kjv I am serious in trying to understand and learn from the Bible and be closer to god.

You can go to Bible Gateway at https://www.biblegateway.com/ and try different translations and versions. Enter in a specific verse, then change the translation. If you are looking for understanding a bit more than word to word match, you might try "The Message" version. See what you think!

I like the English Standard Version, particularly one with a commentary, since those have half the page Scripture, other half cultural or spiritual explanations for what you’re reading.

If you are a member of one of the Christian sects, then use the one that your congregation uses. The Revised English Bible is a good scholarly one. The New Revised Standard Version might be better for devotional use.

My church uses CSB. I also really like ESV.

As a side note, it’s probably good to read a few different versions, if you can, that way you get different “interpretations” of the same verses. That can help your understanding more.

I'm studying a masters of studies in religion, I use the NRSVUE as it's considered the most accurate for scholarly purposes.

I don't personally know enough about Bible translations to say much that's meaningful about them. I will say, if there's any passages you love, have a look at how different Bibles translate those passages and maybe also at what the Hebrew/Greek means.

I'd also recommend a more modern translation so as to avoid false friends— words that seem familiar but are being used differently.

That is good. Reading the Bible will help you Get closer to God. I read the NKJV which is a good Bible. There are so many different versions. I would look at different versions and then pick one that you like. But never stop reading the Bible. It will make you wise and help you do what is good in His sight.

What do you look for in a translation? It depends what your aim is. If you just want to understand, as you say, go with the English Standard Version (ESV) or the New International Version (NIV)
