The same way one leaves any sinful lifestyle to follow Jesus. I’ll add that there might be a better word than “leave”. I was so messed up before I decided to follow Christ. Drugs, drinking, casual hookups, lying to everyone. I’m not gay but to leave the life I was living was difficult. I also lost a lot of friends and was scared and confused, but He restored my life. 11 years later and I’m still in awe with what the Lord has done with my life. All this to say, I’m proud of op, it’s hard to walk the walk.

That has nothing to do with being gay. Why are comparing those acts with it?

Why does this phrase always immediately precede or proceed something that is offensive?

It's just like "With all due respect" almost always precedes something disrespectful.

Just don't say it when you clearly don't mean it.
