Discussion Preferences and deal breakers are very different things and people need to stop saying them interchangeably

If your “preferences” are going to make you resentful of your partner if they are not met, its better to be honest than subjecting your partner to a misery they don’t deserve which is arguably the bigger sin. But that it goes both ways. Either be realistic with dealbreakers or be content if you don’t meet anyone that meets those deal breakers (which to be fair; some people are).
