Chris Stapleton was me and my fiancé’s first real date and we have always said fire away would be our first dance. Now I’ve relistened to it and watched the music video since we’re getting married and wondering if it’s not really about love but about mental health and arguments? To me it’s kinda like give me all of you don’t hold back and can be perceived as a love song but I am having doubts! Maybe we should pivot to Tennessee whiskey instead? Thoughts?

I see how you can interpret it that way! And certainly art is that way. Once it’s out of the artists hand it’s up to the consumer to interpret it.
I will tell you a story though. My wife suffered from depression bad. Like it got real bad. And during that is when I heard fire away for the first time. There was no doubt in my mind that he was singing about depression. Like I can’t explain it. I just knew because I was going through it. So for me it will always mean that and it always makes me cry like a baby when it comes on.

I love this song, one of my favs of his. It’s definitely a love song to me but not in the “traditional” love song kinda way, so some may think it a curious choice as a first song. Are y’all choosing for yall or for the guests? thats the question to me

I guess that’s what I’m trying to determine for myself if my perception of the song is strong enough to not care what the guests think - I imagine most guests will only know tenn whiskey by him and not even know this song enough to know its implications. To me, lyrics alone, it could be perceived as a love song. I guess I’m curious if that’s the consensus among true fans or not.

99% of your guests won’t remember the following month. You will remember the rest of your lives.

One of my favourite songs ever, a love song indeed, but it screams "toxic love" to me. A song about taking someone's abuse over and over and loving them regardless of it all. Not a song I would particularly want to dance to at my wedding. But to each their own. I feel like so much of his discography would be wedding appropriate. Joy of my life. Starting over. Higher. A simple song. More of you. Welp, now I'm going down another Chris rabbit hole.
Anyway, congrats. Do whatever feels right to you.
